If you were hired as a Salesman/Saleswoman in a good company. Would you sell a product that you do not use? Let's say you were hired in a company selling brand A and you happen to use brand B. Would you resign because you know that brand A is not a good product. Would you sell or market brand A anyway keeping in mind that it is just a job and you do necessarily have to use the product? What do you think?
Just Curious,
SFC

I probably could, but I do not know how good I would be at it. How do you sell a product well if you do not use it and know how it REALLY works.

Eh, this is why I am not a good sales person. I worked for fingerhut ( mail order catalog) for a few months. I tried to sell things I didn't use, but it was hard. Outside of telling a blatant lie to my customers, I was told to talk up the merchandise. They even coached us to say we used it and loved it even if we hadn't. But I couldn't. I'm glad my call center closed, cuz if it had not I probably would have been terminated before to long.

The truth is, if this is the kind of sales where you really have personally talk to people and convince them to buy the product, it isn't just a matter of ethics. It can be difficult to sell something you yourself don't use, unless you're an extremely good actor. It's much easier to convince people of something that you use yourself and really believe in. At least that's been my experience. Ethically I don't think there's really anything wrong with selling something you don't use, but I myself don't think I could be convincing enough to actually sell it.

Hi Muelitz,
I will not resign but give a try using what I am selling..It will be very hard to relate and promote something that I have no clue at all what was it, what's the effect and how it feels..SO, I have to give a try and use it but not necessarily, I will change my old products!

Dear friend,
I would tell all the things both positive and negative side of that product and if the buyer still wants to buy it I would sell it and more I may not hide its positive side too. I may disclose all its weaker sides too.Still if the customer want to buy it I hope it is upto the customer's choice and later customer may not blame me or tell the manager to dismiss me for false information. Even if the manager wants to not to tell any negative sides I do hope I have to think over it as the customer may sue on me for giving false information or may be for cheating them.

I think it's easier to convince a potential buyer if I've tested the product myself. And If I had the choice, I wouldn't apply to sell products that I don't believe in so I don't have to bother resigning.

Hi Muelitz,
I would sale the brand A without useing it because if it is on the market and people are buying it, that means brand A is useful fore those people. YOu know what i mean?
I can use that brand B but brand A to have more atraction on buyers and they waht more brand A (brand A is that brand that i never use). For that buying people is useful. For sore i will sale brand A without thinking only to make money.

If i were the salewoman, with this scenario, i would
not mind selling Brand A even if i'm using brand B.
Anyway, who does know what i'm using. It's part
of my job as s sales representative. Otherwise, if
you resign because of "pride" you would have a hard time
finding a job if you have that kind of attitude.
Do i make sense?

I would do my job. Unless I didn't use brand A because I know it to be harmful. Lots of people sell one car type that they do not drive, or work in a store that sells toothpaste they don't use, or work at McDonalds when they would prefer Burger King or Taco Bell. I don't see this as any different.

I am a lousy sales person to begin with. I do not believe in trying o influence people. I don't want to try and inluence people. My ather is a salesman, and he could sell ice cubes to an eskimo. As a result, I have made mysel immune to sales pitches. I have no interest in tying to sell things especially things that I can not or will not or do not use.

I have been a telemarketer I have sold many things I did use, but that does not mean other people don't use them. If I like a mac and you like a pc, why shouldn't I sell you a pc?
However if it was something I really am firmly against then I would not sell it. I never took every telemarketing jobs, only the legal honest ones.

it is part of the job so i have no choice. professionaly you can not realy choose what ever your head or your boss tells you to sell. i am a singer and there are songs that i dont like to sing but if the management wants you to hear you singing that then there is not much of a choice. if you are professional in your work you wont thin mush of what you like. so going back with the product i will study the product and try to use it too. so i know how to talk about the product i am selling.

well i guess i can never become a sales person. i find it impossible to market a product i don't use. not everyone is lucky enough to be employed by a company that makes his/her favourite products.
i am a coke person and i can't imagine trying to sell pepsi. similarly, i only use certain brands because i believe in the quality. how am i going to convince another person when i don't trust the product itself? cheers ;p

I would sell a product that I do not use, simply because it is my job, and I need to make money to get by in this money-hungry world. But, I would rather sell something that I used within my own home and was personally happy with. People, for the most part, can kind of tell if a salesperson is being false with them. The more genuine that a person is when trying to sell something, the better impression they make on the customers.
