Onion a day keep the cardiologist away..Studies show that people who eat a medium-sized onion daily can lower their overall cholesterol and raise their HDL,or good cholesterol.
Onion has also been shown to lower blood pressure and help prevent blood clots.A study by the National Cancer Institute showed that people who eat diets high in Allium vegetables such as onion and garlic suffer from less stomach cancer than those who don't.It is also antibacterial and anti fungal,so they can help ward off colds and relieve stomach upset.
Onions are also a source of vitamin C,potassium, dietary fiber and Folic acid. They also contain calcium, iron and have a high protein quality.Onions are low in sodium and contain no fat.
Onion is also excellent for indigestion and is believed to be a natural source of energy and some people swear that an onion a day can prevent hair loss.
When purchasing onions look for dry outer skins free of spots or blemished
A word of caution for nursing mothers,if you are breast feeding your baby, stay away from onions, because they could cause the baby to suffer colic.
So do you like onions?

I love onions. And I like all kinds of them. I like red onions fresh in my salads. Yellow onions to cook with. Green onions in salads, salsa, cook with, eat by themselves, and many other uses. I remember my dad used to just eat the green onions by themselves with a touch of salt on them. I use the white onions the least but still like them. The information you provided just will give me more reason to eat more onions and garlic. I love the way onions and garlic enhance the flavor of foods. We usually cook with one of the other on a daily basis. I don't have an onion daily but I have quite often. One of my favorites with onions are onion rings which I only have occassionally due to deep frying but they sure are good!!!!![em]wub[/em

I like onions well enough. But I don't think I could eat one every day. My hubby has one of those microwave onion cookers. He eats a seasoned whole onion ocasionally. But daily,I think we would both tire of onions quickly. Good information to keep in mind though.

Hi roshand, I happen to love onions and I didn't even know
that they were healthy for you! I know about garlic, but not
onions. So that just makes it even better. It is very
interesting to hear what they find out about the veggies
that you eat all the time can do for you. I happen
to have high cholesterol so this is really good news for me.
I tend to overlook the fact that certain foods are actually
healthy for me besides the ones that are obvious like
bananas, carrots, brocolli.

Yes I like onions, and ive never heard of them being good for the heart, but if you consider that garlic is good for you then the onion is a relative.I like onion cooked and raw,in salads I love raw onion, but lol the ionly problem comes when it lingers on your breath!but I particularly like them fried, with a tiny bit of sugar, then they caramellise nicely.

Ilove cooking with onions. I can try eating it raw, because I have tried before and it has a very strong taste to it.
I eat it often cooked in food. I have read where is is good for your health.
Thanks for all the information you have shared.

Garlic is also suggested blood clots. I put onion in most dishes, but I don't know if I could eat one by itself. I have some superficial blood clots in my leg. I was generous with the chopped onion I put in my tuna fish last night-and fish is good, also. Of course, mayo is not good for the problem, but--

Oh yeah!!! We do love onions, I and my family and good for us because of the many benefits you've just posted. We can eat them both cooked or uncooked. All varieties in fact like regular yellow ones, red onions, sweet Bermudas and young green onion They are such an appetite booster and so my family love onions. Onions indeed has amazing curative powers that is in almost every dishes or side dishes, I make it sure I slip some onions. Onions is really one great natural medicine and you are very right in all the things you post. May I add that roasted onions when eaten with honey, or with sugar and oil, can promote the expectoration of tenacious mucus, and are very conducive to cure inveterate coughs. The expressed juice, applied with figs beaten together can maturate and break abscesses, boils, etc. If there is a threatened seated fever, the half of a raw onion bound upon the sole of each foot at bedtime until morning, by which time will draw out to a great extent the febrile disorder from the system. A table spoonful of the juice expressed from crude raw red onions, in their crude or raw state is a sure and speedy remedy in extreme cases of suppressed urine; and table spoonful when taken three times a day is considered curative for dropsy. There are actually a lot more but suffice it to say that onions are amazing!
Thank you for posting helpful info on my favorite onion. Cheers

I eat more saturated fat than 90% of our population, from eggs through whole mile (2 gallons a week). I also eat avocado and coconut milk in most of my cooking. My cholesterol 6 months ago at my last checkup is around 180 -- good range.
That said, onion is a staple in most of my cooking. I always have a 10 lob bag of onions next to the stove.

I like union and i like to have meal with uncooked onion. The spicy taste make me have meals quickly. If it too spicy I will dip it with thick sauce. I believe it can prevent blood disease and it can kill most of the bacteria. I usually have half a onion every day.
