Can too much chlorine make me sleepy?

I've been taking my son to his swimming lessons every day of this week and I've found that each time we come home, I am extra tired and sleepy. I have napped after every class because of the length of time we have spent at the swimming pool (usually 50 minutes swim lesson and about 45 mins play). The smell of chlorine is definitely strong and no doubt getting to me. This can't be healthy.
Has this ever happened to you?
I think I'll sit outside in the courtyard next week and see whether that makes a difference.

I looked up some information, but I did not find anything about chlorine causing sleepiness. However, I did find this about chlorine and I think that you should know about it. I read on one of your responses that the chlorine was so strong that you had to was Maddy's clothes twice. Well check this out,

Yup I do feel sleepy when I'm taking a hot bath but because I'm not swimming, just my son, I'm not sure why I feel so tired afterwards. One of the other parents mentioned she was extra tired than normal. I'll sit out in the yard and see if that helps.

The Chlorine isn't making you sleep, the extra exercise is!

Probably just the chance to sit still, plus you remember you are still out in the heat. Go sit out anywhere in the heat and that time of day, would mak me tired too. Makes me tired just thinking about doing that LOL

Yeah chlorine fumes as another poster put it. I can still smell it on my sons clothes after washing it two times already. One of the other parents said they were feeling extra tired too. I'll sit outside in the courtyard next week and see how it goes. Thanks ebsharer.

Hi maddysmommy,
Actually, I am not thinking this way, but I know after swimming I will feel so tried and sleepy! But, I am thinking just because of too much exercise from swimming..
Anyway, I am curious also if it has some connection!
I might also try to experiment that!

Hi checapricorn, I wasn't swimming, just my son so maybe sitting there just watching could of tired me out. I just know the the chlorine smell was really strong and maybe it just got too much for me.

It could be the chlorine, but also it could be because it is so humid in a swimming pool and when you are just sitting it could be that making you feel so tired.
It would probably be a good idea to sit out in the fresh air if you can next time.

Hi gemini, I'm going to do that next week and see how I feel. Even one of the other mothers were saying how extra tired they were. Another poster mentioned chlorine fumes and I tell ya the smell is extra strong and I had to wash my son's swimming togs twice and I could still smell the chlorine.

Well I think if your suspecting that you are getting affected by the chlorine then maybe your son may also experience that more so that he swims in it and is soaked with it. Does he feels the same way as you. I guess being there and waiting and getting bored with the time you have in there makes you feel sleepy not the chlorine, because if that is so then the swimmers might also feel like yours since they are the one that is most likely exposed to it than you are.

Thanks rsa101. As far as I can tell he has more energy after his swimming class than I do sittng there watching him. Maybe it's the combination of the humidity, chlorine and just sitting and watching probably tiring me out. One of the other parents mentioned how extra tired they were too.

Wow going to the swimming pool everyday is really something. I have never done that but I woudl think just spending so much time outdoors (in the sun?) would make someone tired.
your son must be feeling really tired after each session as well! perhaps as a kid he has so much energy that he doesn't feel it. but everytime after a swim i feel especialy hungry and tired. :)

hi squaretile, he does feel tired but not like me. He's the one exercising and I'm just sitting there watching him haha. He's taking swimming lessons and is on level 2 so far and enjoying it. Maybe the combination of the humidity, chlorine and sitting there and watching has probably made me extra tired. I'm going to sit out in the courtyard next week. There is some shade so we shall see. Thanks again.

That's probably why my son is tired, but I'm not swimming with him but sitting there watching him. Oh well, I'll sit outside and see what happens next week, Thanks manojjonam.

yeah, this was happen to me before. the care take of the swimming fall advice us that they won't allow us to swim in the pool because they apply chlorine on it but we force them to allow us so while swimming we smell the chlorine. i am the one who first affected, i felt very sleepy so i take a nap on the cottage but it is not a nap it's already sleep.

Thanks julyteen. I think it's a combination of the chlorine fumes, humidity and sitting there watching that has tired me out (like other posters have mentioned).

It does sound as though the chlorine fumes have been having an effect on you.I know my local pool is laden with chlorine, and the smell of it is really string. The thing is the stronger it gets the more it `nips` your eyes, and my eyes always go red and sometimes quite sore, but it maybe would be worth checking on a search engine to see if chlorine fumes can make you sleepy.

Thanks ruby i'll do just that and see if it is. That's what I should of said "chlorine fumes'. I didn't swim just my son so I know it's not because of exercise that I was tired.

Good day...This is good discussion about chlorine awareness. I'll do some research and post it here after I have found something concrete.

I am going to research a little bit about it too. Chlorine fumes could be the issue here as well.

In my views the clorine is hard stuff and the swimming is hard exercise so when you swim it normal that you get tired . The tireness and sleepy ness is the result of the swimming . But incase of clorine I not sure that it effects or helps . I know too much is bad for health. So too much clorine is bad for the skin. It may hamper to the beautyness of the skin

He loves the water and is enjoying his swimming classes. I on the other hand don't like the water and only swim when I really have to. Thanks jessica.

Getting too much chlorine into your system can be very dangerous, poisonous. It can hurt your health seriously, not just sleepiness. You should be careful with it.

Thanks greenline I will. I think I'll sit outdoors next week while he has his lessons and then head on home right after. It can't be good for him either.
