When you were a kid, you had grand ambitions, were you able to achieve them now?

During childhood we dream big and think that we can conquer the world. We dream about becoming president, a famous author, the fastest man alive, the most noted scientist, the highest paid actor. For children brought up in a religious environment they might want to become a Mother Theresa. What were your dreams when you were a kid? Were you able to achieve even 1/4th of these dreams?

You're funny. I dreamt of being a dove too. I'm relieved you've stopped dreaming of becoming a whale. Good for you! At least you still dream up to now, and that's what will keep you motivated to strive for greater things in this world.

Right! these dreams help us to dream big and be motivated. What if we have given up as an adult? Like we know now that some of these dreams are "out of reach" so we stopped trying to achieve them? We should be like children, hopeful and full of the zest for life. It is only in having these dreams that we are motivated to aspire for greater things.

I'll answer this question with a firm... "kind of..." ;~D Like most kids, I had a lot of dreams and ambitions. I wanted to be a stuntman, instead I was a paratrooper. Not exactly the same thing, but then again, no one can say it isn't a reasonable facsimile. ;~D Another ambition I had was to run my own business. While I've never actually ran a brick and mortar store, I do have an online shop and teach guitar. The IRS taxes me as a proprietor, so (again), not exactly what I had in mind as a kid, but not far from the mark either. The other major aspiration I had was to be able to help others. I'm a retired Army NCO. I've been a paramedic (with training in Search and Rescue) and wildland firefighter. I've been on disaster recovery teams in snow emergencies, floods and hurricanes. That one, I think I hit several times over.

(Smiles) I like how you described the transition of your dreams into reality and your positive attitude about it. You're an optimist and a good natured person. I like most the thing about being "taxed by the IRS cause you are a proprietor.."(LOL). Thanks for that very refreshing input.

I never dreamed of being rich or famous, but I think I always wanted to be known as a poet and a writer. I have had some of my poems published in magazines and small press anthologies, and now I am getting known for my informative writing on the internet. Most of all I wanted to be independent, adventurous and brave, and I think I am all of those now.

I hope your dream will come true. As George Eliot said - "It is never too late to become what you might have been".

Fantastic, it's good to know you were able to achieve your childhood aspirations. Getting a poem published and being able to write on the internet is quite an amazing feat. Congratulations! I did manage too to get a few short stories published but my pipe dream is to be able to publish a book that could be read by people all over the globe. That would be the day. Good luck to you !

Congratulations, at least almost all of your childhood dreams are coming true. You are truly blessed. Go on and achieve the rest of your dreams. You have not failed if you still keep trying. Try and try until you succeed. All the best.

I can see your point. The reality of today oftentimes do not fulfill our childhood dreams, but don't give up. For as long as we are breathing, there is hope. Keep trying to fulfill the rest of your dreams. Who knows? The fulfillment of your next dream maybe just around the corner. Good luck.

I used to dream that I would grow up to direct hollywood movies... never wanted to be a star, just wanted to be behind the camera... I still sometimes wish I could do that (and I know there are a few directors out there that made it big with low budgets) but it's just not possible right now. I'll have to hit the lotto or something to be able to afford to make a movie... but hopefully my daughter will be able to fulfill her dreams ... that's more important to me than me fulfilling my own.

Wow! I like what you said about your daughter fulfilling her dreams as being more important than your own. Parents do pass their dreams to their children. In one way or another these dreams manifest themselves in the way we encourage our kids to take this and that course. This is good if we know that there are limits to what we let our children do. We must realize that it is their lives and that they should fulfill THEIR dreams, not ours. Thanks for that very enlightening contribution.
