one of the most important thing to do on your site is improve your web page load time. these are the factors that you need to address:
1. Sounds, Videos and Gadgets
2. Images and Pictures
3. Connection to external servers
4. Width and Height tags
5. JavaScript and external scripts
6. HTML clean up
7. Simplicity in design
8. Links check
9. Contents spread
some of the explanations are long you can follow this link to read the whole explanations.

Try for this free software: http://nvudev.com/index.php . This a good WEB,HTML editor. If want to create interactivity learn php-mysql or asp(mylot is made of). If you want to use these scripting, you have to find a free hosting service that supports those.
