I love to eat using banana leaves. We do that here in the Philippines. In our place, we use them when we go to the beach, picnics, farm and even just gathering in the house. I've seen some restaurants and catering services use banana leaves on their plates too. I don't know why, but I love to eat when my plate has a banana leaf. It seems that it adds flavor to the food. And you know what? Sometimes, we don't use utensils in eating. We just use our bare hands, it's great eating! But of course we wash our hands before and after eating. Happy mylotting day to you.

To many non south indians eating on a banana leaf may sound very exotic. But this is a very ancient tradition in South India. At Most marriage functions food is served on banana ie plantation leaves. It is a custom there to do so.But eating on banana leaves also has its humorous side.I have seen people not used to eating on it struggle with trying not to spill the food on the leaves!!As south indian food consists majorly of rice and gravy, sometimes the gravy tends to flow out of the leaves and novice eaters have a tough time adjusting to eating on plantain leaves!

Yes b02! I also prefer to eat on banana leaf in functions and special occasions. It is an important part of Indian food culture, particularly in feastivals and special occasions. Also this has spiritual approval for many centuries. In our locality banana leaves are said to be the golden dish of the poor! Another speciality is that by eating hot items on banana leaf, there we get a particular nice odour and feel the items carrying a particular taste for that. Thanks for this nice and specific discussion!

Hihi, I have no strong preference but it does perks up my eating somewhat. The leaf smells good and looks kinda different from the norm. Cool!

i have tried eating in a banana leaf a lot of times already.. we have that tradition here in our country just like in your country too. but we only do that in the province, in the city that's rare to find families eating in a banana leaf since, there are no banana tress here anymore. we use plates here. but there are restaurants in the city that would serve the foods in banana leaves. native Filipino restaurants. and when we eat in banana leaves, we dont use spoon and fork, rather, we use our hands to pick the foods!

I am from central India and my husband is from south Indian state of Kerala. There traditional way of eating food is in banana leaves. especially om special occasions like festival (Onam, Vishu) etc. I found it amusing in the beginning but now I am very comfortable with eating in a banana leaf. There is a trick involved in managing the food with all the different varieties of chutneys, pickles etc on the leaf. I am a big fan of south Indian food and its even more tasty when being eaten on a banana leaf.

Banana leaf packed lunch - lunch time
Here in the Philippines we also do love eating on banana leaf and we do that mostly during outing or picnic. Banana leaves are not always available especially in urban area so only those who live in the country side can actually take advantage of the using banana leaves in packing their food. The taste of rice is actually enhanced when wrapped in banana leaves so many people really prefer this. I myself do love to eat in banana leaves too but banana leaves are not always available to me so I can only enjoy this occasionally.

I am a Malaysian of Indian descent. I do love eating from banana leafs. Only in restaurants, weddings and Indian festivals I get a chance to eat from banana leaf. Eating from banana leaf helps to save money and water as we do not need plates and best of all no need to wash dishes!

Here in Philippines we also use banana leaf, but not in functions, we use it to wrap rice, as plates too when we go out for picnics. The food not only tastier but more practical to use it than to bring heavy plates. We also use banana leaf to cook rice cakes.

It is wonderful and i really admire you. I like it either even I have had no that experience. I only have rice and chicken wraped in lotus leaf once, it is tasty. There are few trees here and they have no big leaves. I hope I can have foods wraped in banana leaf some day.

We used banana leaf too much more than you do.In fact we cook using banana leaves to wrap up the food. Like fish in a banana leaf, steamed over a low fire. This tastes delicious, and the aroma is so good, you'll have to eat , otherwise...(smiles) We also cook rice with banana leaves. It gives a different aroma to the cooked rice, makes it more palatable. During big local occassions too, we used big banana leaves to serve the rice and other cakes. But this is in our village. In the city where I live right now, special porcelain plates are used. There are some diners that still cook fish with banana leaves and we call it "pinaputok na tilapia" ( broiled/steamed fish) and the food sure tastes delicious. Most of the eateries here however, make use of the usual plate and bowl.
