What do the christians have against harry potter?

I am a VERRYY devoted christian I go to church EVERY WEEK and youth group too, so do not question the integrity of my faith. I, unlike many christians think that the harry potter book series is very imaginative and, quite frankly, one of the best book series I have ever read. It is a FICTION book. JK Rowling is NOT trying to pass it off as truth! So why are some people getting all upset over it? Harry Potter has turned millions of people on to reading, which is a great thing! Its not like Harry Potter is giving us a complete book of spells to try! It does not give us satanic goals to accomplish, like spreading evil. Infact, there are great morals and lessons learned from the books like, good triumphs over evil, and keeping your friends close, and about standing up for what you believe in. It is a childrens book, written by a childrens author. Nothing more. I am soo angry when people try to say that it is an evil book with evil intentions and an alternate agenda.

I agree with you. I am a Christian and a Language Arts teacher. I would teach any of the Harry Potter books in my classes given the chance. You are correct...they are fiction and therefore are meant to be read for enjoyment. JK Rowling is an amazing writer and any student could learn a bunch by reading a dissecting one of her novels. It does include good morals, lessons learned...especially true friendship. Again, I am a teacher and a Christian and I would recommend it for kids to read in the classroom.

The same thing they had against James Dean, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Dungeons and Dragons, and anything else that sounds dangerously fun and/or thought provoking. Harry Potter is simply the scapegoat du jour. This is the same jolly attitude that banned Christmas and Music in Cromwell's England, and the best thing you can do is ignore the silly sods; all they're doing is boosting the sales of the thing they're complaining about in the first place.

I'm a Catholic, and my country is a strongly catholic country. Unfortunately the church still tries to oppress individuals who try to express their imagination in works of Fantasy. When the Da Vinci Code was introduced, they even wanted to organise pilgrimages to exorcise the evil. "sigh"

Often, those who represent the Christian world show their fear and ignorance a little when confronting these issues. JK Rowling is not attacking Christ and Christ will not be demeaned by Harry Potter books in any way. I remember there being a fuss about Monty Pythons' the Life of Brian. Admittedly they used the events of Christs life, but the whole point of 'Brian' is that he was not the Christ...so how can it be defamatory or harming to Christianity? I think it's just over-reaction and that it just fuels the fire for the people who think Christians are not living in the real world. There is no difference between JK Rowling books and Enid Blyton or Beatrix Potter, they're all fantasy. Christians got excited about The Compass being a darker version of the Narnia books - so what? CS Lewis was free to write his books and they were made into movies, why cry about someone expressing their own alternative view? I hate it when people do this sort of thing and claim to represent the Christian viewpoint - in truth there are narrow-minded people about, within and without the church... If we want to be free to express our views, we have to be prepared to let others express theirs, the trut will out, I don't think God needs us to fight these battles for Him.

the reason is that harry potter is making the practice of witchcraft it is saying to kids that its okay to do. i agree with those who say its evil. god speaks about witchcraft in the bible. its a way for satan to try and lure the children into thinking its okay to do. practicing witching and doing the things that are in harry potter is a way to give praise and worship to satan.

you know i have often wonder about that. i mean it is all fictional. there is no place called hogwarts or is there real magic. but i know that somewhere the bible does say that you shouldnt ask the advise of a witch. but that is all. then you have Dante who goes above and beyond making a scene of what happens to those who practice the dark arts of witch craft. but what i find really funny is this: the movie the Golden Campass based on a book written by an athiest was to say that man is to kill God and blah blah blah- she refused to watch it. then she goes off saying that Harry Potter is bad and that whole speal but the funny thing is that she loved Stardust. Which has magic and all that mystical stuff in it. so where are you suppose to draw the line? i think that as long as the parent can explain to their children that such things like magic wands or spells or things of the 'hollywood' manner doesn't exist then who's to say it is wrong? i read every single Harry Potter book and who bought most of them for me- my mom. who didn't like them yet still said it was okay to read them. sometimes i just dont get it you know. people will always find something to complain about. for that is what we have turned into. complainers and whiners. does that sound familar?

Thats funny you ask! I remember being in the 6th grade when the first book came out and I got it from a friend. I pulled it out in front of my mom on the airplane and she told me to put it up and that it was demonic. So I did! But now I feel so out of the loop because it has become such a big series and seems to be positive! Now its too late for me to even try to start reading it (well not really, I just dont feel like it!)

The books don't have to be "evil". But if you are going to indoctrinate children about witchcraft, What better way than with a story about a kid going to witchcraft school? Of course it should be fun and interesting or kids won't read it. These books were published by Scholastic, A school text book printing company. In fact, school Curricula were created to go with it.

I do not understand it either, I know there was a big religious drama over the fact that Albus Dumbledore came out the closet as a homosexual and this gave the "wrong" impression to young children, the impression that homosexuality was fine.

Regardless of one's faith or religion, let us not forget that the harry potter series IS a work of fiction. I guess the people who are so against the series are the ones who really have not read the series and have no idea about the storyline, they won't see beyond the magic in the book, it really is about the friendship and family .

Well, as a devoted Christian, how do you feel about JK Rowlings admission that dumbledore is gay? I think that comment put a lot of wavering christians over the edge. I hear there was quite an outburst about that one. I personally think it's great that she said that, however I'm not Christian, so I wonder about your feelings on that. I do love the books, but I wasn't surprised when the religious right began to oppose it. There are a lot of people out there who use Christianity as an excuse to judge, but I know a lot of Christians are very open minded which is great.

It's the same reason they have issues with Pokemon I imagine. Satanic references, devil imagery, and such. Also potentially because of Dumbldor being gay. Although this came out after the seventh novel, it just added fuel to the fire. I don't know, but it seems to me that Christians who are hard core take offense at all kinds of things:Dungeons and Dragons Pokemon Magic in novels Anything that challenges their beliefs. I don't understand it myself, because they're just books. But apparently they all are hidden subliminally messages to convince kids to join cults, or become pagans.

I'd have to say that to me its entertainment i know full well its not real and i don't really get why theres such an outcry against harry potter. i heard at one point the main concern was that the harry potter books "trivialize" the teachings of the Christian religion against witchcraft sorcery etc. As well as the idea that you can fight evil through good magic rather than the power of god. If the book offends you don't read it let others enjoy it - each to their own.

Dark Jedi is right, books have magic in them, and since it's aimed at the younger audience, while their minds are still mendable to change the way they think and the way they have opinions, christians (some, not all) fear this will make them question their own religion because it's, well, for lack of a better phrase, "so more out there", they believe the kids might say screw you, we're off to be heathens because it's cooler!!!....I'm not saying they're going to be heathens, I'm kind of playing off the overly exaggerated stylings of lets say South Park, to what christians MAY be thinking and hence are so against Harry Potter.....GIVE ME ALAN RICKMAN ANY DAY BABY!!!

i personally LOVE harry potter n im a christian. i can see it from both sides cz harry potter does encourage witchcraft with wands etc which may jus be a devils plan to get more children into it but on the other side as bookworms says jk rowling isnt saying its the truth its just a STORY and storys arent reel! bt i guess it is a bad msg bt i love it anyway.

there is nothing UNCHRISTIAN about harry potter... i don't think they have really understood the books that well to really tell that they have UNCHRISTIAN ideas. I agree with you bookworms. it is a fiction book and the story shows a lot of good morals and lessons that i would consider very "christian".
