Do you think the world would be better without religion?

I do. First of all less wars would have occurred. I mean just look at the Jews and Muslims in the Palestine/Israel land. Also we would have saved so much money that we use to build churches, mosques, give to the church, etc and we could've used it a lot wiser on things like charity to make the world a happier place. Also people wouldn't be forbidden to do things that are non-sensible. I mean religion limits people (ie Muslims can't listen to music as it is haram or against their religion).

i don't think like that, all this happened because we took the meaning of religion in a wrong way, if we understood the meaning of religion in a correct manner all this wars would have been averted

Religion has been the basis of life for the beginning of many countries. If you're from the USA, then you probably cannot understand how deeply religion is based in most cultures... like the Middle East in Palestine and Israel. It's not something they just do, it's a way of life. It's something that makes their life worth living. So if you get rid of that... there would be no life. People need hope, and there is very little of that here on Earth. So people look to a Diety, and to Heaven, or some sort of afterlife that their religion promises them. There will always be corruption, but humanity needs a belief that there is something more out there.

I agree, but if religion was never presented to people do you think that they would be miserable? How can you be miserable if you don't know something even exists. Would havoc occur if religion was never implemented?
I am from North America, so yes, it isn't known for it's religious nature. I admit I should witness the effects of religion in those places before I make such claims.

If you read back into history, you see that even when there weren't gods present, the people created them... to have some sort of security. I think it would be nearly impossible to think of a scenario where religion could ever be void from earth. Today we live comfortably without thinking about our need from "gods." But if you look at all of the pantheistic cultures throughout time, you see that they were so dependent upon those gods, just for survival. Things have changed... and I think they have changed for the better! I appreciate the religious freedom here in America.

I totally agree.Religion is merely a sense of hope.It was created-i believe-so that people could offer it as an explanation to what happens after you die.Which ultimately everyone is afraid of anxious of.It gives people a sense of security that if you believe in something strongly enough and have " faith" it will manifest.
Most religions are based on leading good, sin free lives because lets think about it, who gets rewarded for being bad.
So you have the incentive-heaven and the consequence-Hell.
I think its perfectly logical and understandable. The extremes some people go to on the other hand is something that i will never comprehend.

I don't think so. On a more personal basis, when I am upset I look to God for help. I think it's more of a personal thing for a lot of people.

I think basically religion is good - it teaches you about morals and values. The fundamentals is all about doing good. The problems arise not from the religion, but humans and their interpretations.
The extent to which the religious teachings are being twisted to serve the desires and wants of a few - these are the problems, not the teachings in the religious books!

Personally, I am a freethinker who doesn't subscribe to religious beliefs of any kind. However, I will admit that religion empowers people- giving them hope, security and a higher power that helps them to govern their lives. So no, I don't think that the world would in fact be better without religion.
Yes, there have been wars started in the name of religion- but can one really say that without religion, these wars would never have started at all for other reasons? Or that more wars would not have been caused by the dissatisfaction of people devoid of the hope and joy that religion brings? No, we can't be sure of that at all.
And yes, there are limitations to every religion. But who are we to dictate what is non-sensible or sensible? It is all relative to that person's culture and religion. I don't think it's very fair to impose our beliefs on theirs. About the Muslims and music thing- well 1)the Muslims in my country, Singapore, have a very established musical culture that include dikir barat 2)Muslims in my class enjoy listening to normal music like the rest of us 3)they have their own musical stars who are renowned in Asia like Siti Nurhaliza so I'm not very sure of that point. (I'm not Malay/Muslim by the way, I'm a Singaporean Chinese)

I agree that getting rid of religion would probably be a good move. The problem is that with wars it is quite possible that religion was simply the excuse used to get the masses involved and not the actual reason that there was war. If religion is taken out of the question, there will just be different reasons used to kill thy neighbour.

i think people have to have something to believe in. i believe in God and Jesus but i do not follow any "religion" so to speak and i do not give to any church. i think the whole church thing is a money making scheme. i think people are entitled to believe what they want to believe and should not have to go to war over it. but that is the way of the world. there are many very ignorant people that think their way is the only way and the rest of us who do not conform to their beliefs have no value.

If you do not have the core values that religion teaches, such as charity and compassion for others, what makes you think that people are going to be charitable and give to others? Religion also gives people hope and the strength to go on when times are tough. My religion does not forbid me from doing non-sensible things but it is the foundation that keeps me from doing horrible things.

It depends. If the science can explain all of the world and all people are rational we will not need religion. But there are still many mysteries we can't expain, sometime we should bend to the nature. When some one suffer uncurable disease, he will turn to religion to get consolation.

At the same time though science can't explain some mysteries of the world, it is in the process of doing so and you must realize nothing can possibly explain the mystery of the concept of a God except a mere scripture which isn't guaranteed to be even remotely accurate.

i totally agree with you. the world would be a much better place it there was no religion. or at least if people followed a single (practical) religion. Why the wars and bloodshed? Religion has caused a lot of problems so far. Its also a cause for terrorism in some way. All you need is to be true to yourself and try to be good at heart. But unfortunately, Im sure many people would would not like my idea very much. The only thing religion failed to teach people is how to respect other religions and live together in perfect harmony.

With religion comes Faith. If you can't have Faith in something, then what do you have? If there was no religion then no one would have the Holy Spirit telling them right from wrong. People would go around doing whatever they pleased with no conscience. How can you say far less wars would've occurred??? Men fight wars for many reasons...power, greed, freedom. Religion gives people something to look forward to and to help guide their life.

As much as I'm NOT one for religion...even if religion suddenly didnt exist...we'd still have wars, ppl would still die pointlessly, there would still be hatred, discrimination and the world would NOT be a happier place...Why? Because the human race is the most arrogant, self absorbed, hate loving species in existance..We CAN'T live in harmony...not really....sure some of us can and do BUT there is ALWAYS going to be that group who loves to stir the pot and get the ppl riled and we the ppl LOVE to be riled (well not all of us but the majority without a doubt)..Peopl love to argue for some damn reason...they all want everyone to be the same and the base being should be each of them..meaning "Joe" thinks everyone should be like him and those who arent like him and dont think, feel, dress, act etc etc like him are 'less than' and he makes sure they know it along with everyone else...."Suzi" wants everyone to follow her lead and be like her...."Frank", "Bob", "Marcia", "Alice", "Tom" etc etc etc also all have the same thought process.....
Making religion disappear WOULD NOT make the world a better place...making the PEOPLE disappear however is a good place to start

Dear friend,
I hope religions were formed with a intention of well being of humans but those who do not know the real teaching of religions and its better side takes religion for negative aspects and often goes for unnecessary fights. Against those humanity concerns. Even now there are groups forming new religions with better and worse intentions I hope if there were no religion people would have a better side on that area. I hope people could have better intention of unity and more groupism will be limited. May be some other groups will be formed. Any how I hope much of fights on religions would be limited.

No,not at all.I would like to contradict you all in this discussion. Our God Almighty wanted us all to live peacefully in this world that's why He gave us divine guidance in the shape of first divine religion. It is the religion which tell us that we have to die and go before God Almighty on the Day of Judgement. Our deeds and misdeeds are being recorded and we have to be answerable to God Almighty. In fact it is our fault to make different religions and diversions. The western world has already separated religion from the state that's why they are facing many social, moral problems. That's why Jesus is coming again to unite all believers in one faith and set up first IDEAL WORLD STATE on this earth to fill it with peace, prosperity and justice..............This all will be given due to religion.

I totally agree with you that less violence would have occurred without religion, but still we would have found some other reason to kill each other. Religion was made as a good thing, and if used properly it can be used as such. But as we have learned using it to discriminate others is bad, maybe the rest of the world will catch up with us. Religion gives people the sense of a higher power that is guiding them and a reason to have goals in life, plus it answers one of the biggest questions in life, where do we go when we die?

For me, belonging to a religion is one of the ways to publicly declare what you believe in. But religion will not determine the degree of your personal relationship with the Lord. Lots of people have a strong religion but has no intact relationship with the Lord. I think we must start contemplating on that concern before we think of religion. =)

No i think the world would be better if there would be no competition between the religions .........i believe in God and feel its same for everyone .......if god doesn't differ for different castes then why should we people fight for it ......agreed that every religion has its own gods ......but i think that the supreme power is same for all .
