Stop, Thief!

I have a thief in my neighborhood and I have no idea who it is, but it's got me spooked. I have a variety of birds that visit right outside my office window every day, hummingbirds, several kinds of finches, cardinals, sparrows and mourning doves. I splurged and spent $1-some on a small bag of seed at WalMart yesterday since I was out and they'd been hollering at me for the last day or so. I brought in the few groceries that needed to go into the fridge and cupboards and left the WalMart bag with the bird seed on the front porch to mess with later. I never did get around to filling the feeders last night, but I do remember seeing the bag on the porch not two feet from the front door when I locked up, and decided to just leave it there until morning. I went out this morning to check on my plants and noticed a WalMart bag on the grass next to the garbage can, so I picked it up and tossed it, thinking it was one that I had maybe on the back porch or under the trailer that some of my plants are on or whatever. Never gave it another thought. Came in and checked email and such and heard the birds hollering by the window, which reminded me to go fill the feeders. Hmmmm ... No bag of bird seed on the front porch, and that has to be the WalMart bag that I had picked up off the ground, as it was only a few feet from the porch. No sign of the bag of bird seed, and not a single seed laying on the porch or anywhere nearby - it's GONE! I asked Tom if he had done something with it and he said no, so he and I walked around the whole property and still found no sign of the bag of seed. Whoever the thief is, he must be of good size to cart off the whole 3-lb bag of seed intact. So my little avian friends are still hungry and there is at least one of God's creatures out there somewhere that is having a feast at their expense.

Wow a 3 pound bag? I know squirrels will steal bird seed but that would have to be either a pack of squirrels or one mighty big one! Here in florida we call them tree rats cause they are puney little things. Not like the ones back home in AR which are huge compared to the squirrels here.

We have lots of squirrels here too but they haven't bothered the feeders. I guess at this time of year there is plenty for them to eat. Yes, I just checked the other bag that I know was the same size and it is 3 lbs. I have no idea what could have dragged it off to goodness knows where without tearing it open and/or leaving a trail of seed.

A 3-pound bag isn't that heavy. A squirrel might be able to drag that if they really wanted it. Which i guess this one did

That's rather strange! I had something similar. I had a plant on the porch in a pot, up on the railing which is about 10" wide. The other morning after a calm night with no wind, I found the pot on the porch, overturned and no sign of the plant. I looked everywhere! None of the other pots had been disturbed. I hope someone is enjoying your bird seed and my plant!

Why not the whole pot?! That's why it's so weird!

Oh wow, that is odd. They carted off the plant to share with the rest of the family?

You may have racoons visiting you at night, We used to have them in Colorado and they are pretty strong little critters. Well not so little actually as they can weigh 20 to 40 pounds. They will steal whatever they can eat and come back for more later. Maybe a small surveilance camera and VCR will clue you in to the thief. Unless, of course, you prefer to sit up really late at night and watch.

I just think it's really weird that they took the entire bag and left no evidence whatsoever, not anywhere on the property.

Well I do hope some little critter gets to enjoy it, even if it was at your expense. Have a great day.

Yes, the way I figure it, whoever came up that close and risked getting caught deserved to have it.

Hmmm. Sounds more like a human came and took it than some animal. Most animals would probably open it up and leave evidence, don't you think?

I would think so, and that's why I can't figure it out. We're in a rural area and no one comes into our yard at all, much less up to the porch. The place where the bag of seed was sitting is less than 6 inches from my open bedroom window, and I am such a light sleeper that I even hear the cat when she comes up to the screen. I doubt it was a human.

well, my money is on racoons or ground hog. i've seen several big enough to tote a bag of bird seed. do you have deer out in the country. usually they leave a trail though. somewhat like hansel and gretel. the word might have passed around the country side to come eat at CHEZ LDYJARHEAD'S for dinner tonight and they ALL showed up.

I can understand something getting the bag, but I can't figure out why it wasn't busted open somewhere nearby, leaving evidence. Weird!

That is so strange that someone would take the bag of bird seed. Hey maybe it was the rabbit (hope I have the right critter) that was bothering your plants in the spring.

I've never seen the bunnies around the seed under the feeders, so I don't think it's any of them. But yes, you had the right critters!

Wow, that's sucks...ANyway, I am sure that he will be coming back hoping to get another stuff...Get ready with that rifle! LOL! Anyway, We had that experienced also last time when we started our garden, the tractor was already infront of the gate when we woke up in the morning and we were thinking it was a kid who can't lift it down to the street since it will still be a long journey for him and he will be making a lot of sound!

Sorry to hear about that. That is so awful of someone to do anything like that. Hope you find out who did it and most importantly, I hope nothing else turns up missing either! Those poor little birdies... so hungry too!

its the squirrels. lol! anyway, i don't think anyone will be interested in a 3 lb bag of bird seeds. unless, the birds went loco and decided that if you ain't filling those fillers, they'll be going to start feeding themselves with the bird seed you bought from walmart. these birds are getting smarter by the year you know. lol!!!

What a dilemma! Was it a human thief, or an animal thief, I wonder? I suppose if a person nicked it, at least the only thing they can do with it is use it to feed birds (which you were intending to do anyway!) - and if it was an animal thief, by the time they've broken the bag open, the birds will find the seed! It just shows you can't leave anything lying around ... nothing and nobody are to be trusted - hahaha!

I really don't think it was a person. We don't get much traffic way out here and the porch/window where it was is inches from my bedroom windows, which were open.

HA!HA! well the elderly man i used to work for used to have me spread seed for the birds in the morning on a certain part of property by his window so he could watch them come nibble it. a few times we were surprised that the rabbits started coming to, then the squirrels. they started knowing the time and showing up on time, running the birds off. then one day, since it was in AZ wild boars showed up!there wasnt a crumb left!

I have rabbits and such here too, but none will come up on the porch. They've come close to the steps after the weeds in the driveway and grass nearby, but never up on the porch.

hiya,do you get foxes where you live?,it would be big enough to just pick it up in it's mouth without having to drag it which would probably leave a few seeds in a trail,if not then i'm stumped, probably not a human, though i wouldn't rule it out,but i would think a human would take the carrier bag too.I wish we got foxes where i live though as i am 24 years old and i have never seen a real live fox!

I've never seen any fox out here, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I doubt that a bag of bird seed that is still sealed would be enough to bring a fox right up to my bedroom window, though. I'm still stumped.

I remember one instance, a thief was caught in our neighborhood. he was tied on our village gate. and some of the people who passed by gave him a blow. it was a long suffering for him. but afterwards the cop got him and brought him to the station.

Your thief is of the two-legged humanoid type, Lady. Any other critter would have left a trail, even a cat. I've had animal critters eating and stealing food from outside my house for years and they can't carry anything too far without leaving some kind of clue and/or trail. Ya just can't leave anything out anymore without the chance of the humans taking it. I've even left stuff out on purpose when I've wanted to get rid of something. Sure 'nuff, if they think it's yours, it's gone.

That is too weird, Ldy. I have lived in the country for a good part of my life, and I have never seen anything like that. Usually, the critter, whatever it is, just tears the bag open where it lays and pigs out. When I first moved to my present home, sometimes I would set the garbage outside of my back door, and then take it out to the garbage can in the morning. I learned my lesson very quickly! But, the strange part is, if the bag was one of the white trash can liners that you use in the house, it would be torn apart and the contents spread all around. However, if I had put the white bag in one of the bigger, black or green bags, it would be untouched. I guess maybe because the white bags are thinner than the others, so the scent got out to the little creatures. I don't know. Well, anyway, I hope that you don't have any more thefts. Happy bird feeding.
