No one should be exposed to smoke if they don't choose to be. When the habit really got going way back when, no one realized how much it damaged. Now we know not only that smoking very bad for the smoker but that the second hand smoke can have devastating effects on non-smokers, too.
I've heard news reports about how children breathing 2nd hand smoke can develop lung problems. No one knew that 55 years ago when I was born. My parents smoked around me for several years before they both quit. As an adult, I've suffered from chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. Who's to say it wasn't caused by my being subjected to smoke as a small child? My step daughter was raised with smokers, and she has the same adult problems I do.
My grandmother battled throat cancer in the late '60s after letting my uncle who was a heavy smoker live with her for a couple of years. The doctors told her that 2nd hand smoke was the cause of her throat cancer. She had never smoked herself at all.
When my children were babies, I refused to let my husband smoke in the house. He would go outside to smoke, and he was not happy with me. He quit smoking in 1988. Now he says he's so thankful that I didn't let him smoke around our kids. He feels very guilty about having smoked around my step-daughter when she was little feeling that he contributed to her problems now.
Non smokers have a right to be left in peace, too. I'd hate to count how many restaurant meals I've not enjoyed because someone near me (even in non-smoking sections) was puffing away while I tried to eat. Where were my rights?
If you choose to have this nasty habit, fine. But there's no way you have the right to force it onto me.

Sbeauty: You are in your rights when you say that no one should be exposed to smoke if they choose not to be. I gave you and saphire a plus + because your stories were so moving, my heart went out to you when I read your story about your family and all the medical problems you have had to endure.Im happy tho that your husband quit and your lives have changed for the better, altho I do not know you personally you give me the impression that you have alot of inner strength, you continue to use this strenght to continue to make it through each day. Take care of yourself and give your husband a big hug..

No smoking. For me its a matter of health. I get severe respiratory problems, including bronchitis and asthma, if I'm around any type of smoke, even for just a few minutes. I can't go bowling, to the county fair, or even out to eat at most places. I hate having to live my life avoiding the things that most people take for granted just so people can give themselves cancer.

Nick even tho you have health problems, you should not hate living your life because you have to avoid things others take for granted. No way, nick you should try at least try and enjoy each precious moment of each day. Look for other things that may make you happy but dont shut yourself away from the rest of the world. This is no way to live. Outside is a big world and its also full of clean air so go outside and enjoy it even if its just in your own front yard.Keep in mind we may not wake up tomorrow..

Oh I do try to enjoy my life, but its so hard when something as simple as walking down the sidewalk and passing a smoker can send me into a violent asthma attack, everytime I see someone smoking I either have to cross the street or hold my breath until I'm away from them. Even sitting near a smoker on the bus causes me problems.

I am non smoker. And would like to say that smoking is bad for not only your health but for the person besides you as passive smoking is also harmful. why should other person pay price of your bad habits? So smokers please quit smoking and use that money for good deeds.

From your response it seems that somone was out to annoy you.. If your already outside smoking they had no business standing beside you and telling you to stop.. They should have kept on steppin.. You were in your right and went outside not to bother the non-smokers.. The non-smokers should have respected this... Thanks for your response..

Well, I've (hopefully) just bought my last pack for good. Planning on starting to quit tomorrow, break out the nicotine gum :) I always try to be "conscientious" towards people that don't smoke. Kinda funny, I really can't stand the smell of smoke either lol, and I absolutely hate the smell on my clothes, hair, & hands. I do think it's a bit ridiculous though some of the laws in place-50 feet from a building doorway. I even read something awhile back, somewhere they were banning public smoking anywhere. There's a lot more things out there people are eating and breating that are worse then smoking. I like the first response, put the money towards cheaper/free products to help quit. I'd love to try some of the new meds/products, but the good ones are prescriptions-no health insurance here-and I guess most insurance companies don't cover them anyway. Thanks!

I gave you a= plus because your response made sense and especially because your trying to quit! It will be hard and you will be a nervous wreck but try and keep to yourself while your going through all these changes as not to offend anyone who does not know your trying to quit smoking.. Your right about some of these laws concerning where to smoke.. As for the insurance companies forget them they are out to make the big money, they do not care about people..Thanks for your response

I do smoke ..i quit a couple yrs ago..but then i found out my dad had lung cancer after having quit for several yrs and thought whats the use in it if its meant to be its meant to be..I do however NOT smoke around people i know who are non smokers..like my momma..i go outside her home on the other end of the house and smoke nor do i smoke in resterraunts i wait till i am back in my car then i do smoke..but i dont like the ideal of them banning smoking all over the place i think thats rather stupid myself...we dont ban people drinking to keep them away from people who dont like to be around people drinking...nor people eatting meat from people who chose not to do that...i pay my taxes just like evry other american why shouldnt i be allowed to smoke where and when i chose? ....the non smoking is just a respect for others thing with me but i guess go with the flow ...and to each their own eh?

i think people should do there smoking outside if they insist on doing it.Because the ciggarette smoke is bad on us non smokers too especiall the ones like me who have asthma and get sick easily from the smoke.I am always sick now because my grandfather and uncle refuse to do there smoking outside.
