Okay all MyLotters I was just reading Dear Abby as I do every day. One of the questions to her was from a lady that is having her house remodeled. Her issue is the workers asking to use her bathroom. Quoted from the list listed below she says... "For the past week I have been remodeling my home. Workers have asked to use my bathroom, which is a problem for me as I feel it is an invasion of a personal, private space. I feel they should have a porta-potty in their vans or find a public toilet nearby. Am I wrong? I hate saying "no," but I feel my privacy is stolen." What are your thoughts on this? Do you mind if some one uses your restroom? If you have "workers" in your hosue do you have an issue if they use the restroom? Personally I don't care- I would rather them use my restroom then go to the gas station down the road! Hey I work in remodeling and I know that we would still be charging for the time the guys spent going down the road to use the restroom! We don't make our guys clock out to use the restroom so some one has to pay for it! Here is the link if you want to see what abby had to say. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ucda/20080808/lf_ucda/wifescellphonemysterymanunsettlesherhusband

It would only bother me if they didn't respect my space. If they left the bathroom a mess, I'd phtograph it and e-mail the photos to their supervisor and tell him/her to have a talk with his/her workers about respecting the customers' property. I still would not bar the door to the restroom because...well...when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. If I was concerned about a personal space being violated I'd simply remove anything I considered to be personal while the job was going on and keep that space neutral. There's no point in asking them to bring a port-a-potty because 1)they're gross, especially in summertime and 2)it polarizes the situation into "us" and "them" and trust me when I say that if you want good results with the property where you have to live, make sure the people working for you remain comfortable and aren't walking on eggshells. Oh, and I agree with Abby: keep the lemonade and iced tea flowing. Happy workers do better work.

I think she should have stipulated that her bathroom was off limits in the contract. This sounds like a big job since it is lasting a week or longer. It is kind of dumb sending them down the street because as you say they will be doing it on her time. She should have thought of that beforehand!

I agree - I just personally couldn't imagne telling some one to go down the street. I guess I don't see using my bathroom as an invasion of privacy. Its not like I'm in it LOL!

Yes, and what if she lived out in the country where there were no public restrooms anywhere near? Would she make them go au natural?

She is mad as a loon! Of course contractors must be allowed to use the facilities, if they have to go off-site then it will cause a great delay and they should charge extra. all the best urban

I agree! They should charge a whole lot extra, and use the bushes around the house as an added bonus.

I don't think I could have put it any better than goinlive. Believe me when you are having that kind of work done, you want happy workers. Not only so they will do a good job, but if you complain constantly, nag, fuss about every little thing, there won't be a contractor around that will want to do a good job for you. I don't have a problem with them using the bathroom, since I have two, one upstairs and one in the basement that they would have access too. And they would have no problem with it, since it is kept just as clean as the one upstairs.

As long as they don't make a mess, miss the toilet (I hate when that happens) or leave the seat up, I'm fine with it. I don't get it, most people who own a house have 2 bathrooms, what's so bad about someone using the spare bathroom?

Since they are working for me, I would allow it, even though i do not like too. I do not use other people's bathroom, and really do not like other's using mine. I allow people to use my bathroom, but it is a peeve I have.

If I was remodelling my house (what house? LOL) and the workers were going to be there for quite some time, then I would of suggested they bring their porta-loo but if it's only for a short time, then they can use the guest bathroom and I wouldn't have problem with that.

why would you ask them to bring a porta-loo?? I'm not trying to be rude I just dont understand it. Why the concern with some one useing the restroom?

I think with being more than one worker it would be better to have a porta-loo for all of them to use if they are going to be there working for a long period of time. It's just my preference. Who knows the toilet could be remodelled and therefore they won't be able to use it LOL
@urbandekay (18278)

And you'd be happy to pay extra to cover the cost of hieing a porta-loo? all the best urban

Well, just like you, I would not mind them using my bath room at all. They are working in my house so it is just right that I provide them what they need to do their work properly. Using the bathroom is not a bad thing, they need to use the bathroom and I should not be too selfish to share it with them. This is not a topic of privacy for me but rather of health. They cant hold their pee just to look for another bathroom for them to use just because I don’t want to share my bath room with them, and besides I would rather have them pee in my bathroom than pee in my backyard and stink it! LOL

its just a toilet..unless they are routing through your medicine cabinet or what not i dont see it as a big deal. They'[re only going to be in there for a couple of minutes. If you hired them to spend hours in a day in your house to remodel for you, why shouldnt it be your duty to provide the toilet. Maybe be uncomfortable about it, but not deny them the use of it.

I don't see whats unconfortable about it but worst case you clean it before you use it. I don't see where the invasion of privacy is - I'm sure they aren't asking to use the restroom while shes in it!

I personally dont care, but alot of people are anal about hygene, such as public restrooms and hate the though of a stranger sitting their bare butt on something they sitt their bare butt on. I dont think enough about it to let it bother me, unfortunately some people do. As long as my bathrooms clean (dont wanna be emabrassed by clutter) and they dont like, look through my stuff it really doesnt matter who uses my bathroom.

I've never been in that situation before, but I don't think I'd mind if they used my restroom as long as they didn't leave a mess, which I don't know why they would. I'd feel funny telling them to go to the store down the road...lol. I know if I needed to go real bad, I wouldn't want to have to wait to go somewhere else.

Heck, I'm actually PLEASED when folks ask to use mine! Why? Because I've made it such a pleasant environment, I know they'll enjoy it, & think favorably of me! I keep it clean, pretty, smelling nice, I stock it well, & I even have toys & books for all ages in there! It's one of =my= fave places, too. As a writer, I often have my best ideas when I'm "on the throne!" LOL! Maggiepie

Personally if i was the one paying them to do work i would want them to use my bathroom rather than going to the station down the street. If she feels so strong about it she should at least rent a portapotty.

I guess if you do not mind paying for them to drive down the street that is a good idea. My hubby does construction work and remedels. Normally there is always a porta potty there. I don't see why they did not bring one to your place. But, do you know how badly those things smell? and in yor fron yard! eww! Remodeling your home is always ans inconvience. You must realize that before you begin it.

I guess that you didn't read the discussion. It is not my house being remodled. I don't mind people using my bathroom. Its what do you want. Becasue I have worked in construction for so long I know that for remodeling an existing house there normally isn't a porta potty in the yard. Not when you are remodeling a house where people live. On new construction yeah there is a porta potty.

Hello ebsharer. We have had a lot of remodeling done over the past 5 years. I always show the workers where the bathroom is and tell them they are welcome to use it. I think it would be a great inconvenience for them to have to stop working, go out and get in their vehicle, and drive down to a gas station or store or restaurant to use the bathroom. That just seems unnecessary to me.

Unnecessary and costly. What this woman obvously doesn't understand is if they have to leave to use the restroom she will be charged for that time too. Its like this if you work in an office - do you clock out to use the restroom? No - Same with these guys they don't clock out to use the restroom.

I do not see a problem with it, I never even thought about it when builders and people as to use the toilet. Obviously if I had personal items out, eg tampons and stuff then I would hide them in a cupboard or something. As you said they will charge you for the time it takes them to find a public toilet, as having a portaloo in their van would not be practical as they would not have room for their tools and materials. Also if they had to go to a public toilet then they would probably personally take a long time to cover increasing petrol costs etc, eg have a drink at the pub etc.

It wouldn't worry me at all. The only time I got a bit annoyed was when I used to rent an apartment by myself. The real estate agent used to only inspect the place during the week when I was at work. Whenever I had an inspection, I used to come home to find the toilet seat up. For some reason, this really irritated me. I think it was probably because I had no choice but to let this man in when I wasn't home, and I didn't think it appropriate for him to be using the toilet without asking. Especially I felt that he ought to have left the place the way he found it. I have to admit I used to really scrub the bathroom after he had been there. It was just a funny, quirky reaction I guess.
