Quoted from Yahoo news just now ...
BEIJING (AFP) - The little girl who starred at the Olympic opening ceremony was miming and only put on stage because the real singer was not considered attractive enough, the show's musical director has revealed.
Pigtailed Lin Miaoke was selected to appear because of her cute appearance and did not sing a note, Chen Qigang, the general music designer of the ceremony, said in an interview with a state broadcaster aired Tuesday.
Photographs of Lin in a bright red party dress were published in newspapers and websites all over the world and the official China Daily hailed her as a rising star on Tuesday.
But Chen said the girl whose voice was actually heard by the 91,000 capacity crowd at the Olympic stadium during the spectacular ceremony was in fact seven-year-old Yang Peiyi, who has a chubby face and uneven teeth.
"The reason why little Yang was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image, we were thinking about what was best for the nation," Chen said in an interview that appeared briefly on the news website Sina.com before it was apparently wiped from the Internet in China.

In my opinion it is insulting to be lied to and thought of as so shallow that we must see only the images they think we imagine. It is also an insult to that little girl. Talent is talent whether it comes from Miss Universe or Cinderella's ugly step-sister. Don't pretend to be something else because you think it is what we want to see and will thereby make you look better.

yeah, the original singer must have felt hurted by their action. I just can't imagine how it will impact the future if the child cannot let go the insult for many years and even until the future. they just didn't consider that the action would really impact a pure child's heart.
I really feel sorry for the real singer.

True. In all their recent attempts to upgrade their image I think China has done just the opposite. Between the tricks they have played with Olympic Opening ceremonies, contaminated medicine and pet food, lead based paint on toys, etc. all being presented as "quality" goods, I now have a rather distrustful view of China. I trust their words and actions about as much as our local used car salesmen. I know that's not fair to China, but they are creating the image by their own actions. If they pay more attention to quality and less to perceived image the world will begin to trust again. The public may be gullible but we are not stupid.

I just finished reading this story on another news site. I don't think that having a so called prettier girl lip-syncing "Ode to the Motherland" did a thing for the image of china in fact I think it probably hurt that same image once the story got out. It is so sad that so much hinges on looks instead of talent. Who knows which one will be the prettier when they are grown up more.

yes, she is not ugly and I also think that she looks so pure and innocent, she is beautiful the way she is. I think those people banned her from performing were totally blind.

We know now that if they can "cheat" the real singer out of her fame then who knows what else they will cheat at in the actual games!

uh huh. you said it very well. I'm a bit pessimistic over the games after knowing such thing happening to a little child.

Yes,it is sure and it's reported in Chinese newspapers,so we shouldn't label it as "cheat".I've seen the picture of the real singer and I do think the ceremony designers made a mistake by choosing the girl by appearance and what's worse, getting naive children involved in this.By doing this, they didn't project the right image.

I really feel sorry for the real little singer of the song. they should have considered that this will impact the feeling of the child and also their future. the real singer must have felt hurted by their action, I believe. just imagine how if the child cannot let go the hurt / grief for many years and even until the future.
and someone (deebomb) who commented after you, stated some words that really hit the point: "It is so sad that so much hinges on looks instead of talent. Who knows which one will be the prettier when they are grown up more."

i like Yang Peiyi!i can't stand that Zhang Yimou to the so-called "national interest"to give up a small girl's self-repspect.when the reporters asked her"do you regret you did not show on the stage? "she said with the tearful eyes:"i do not regret, becaust it is enough for me to be my singing voice is on the Olympic opening cermony! "and then ,she always ceied as soon as the reporter asked her about"Olympic poening ceremony".and let's look at Lin,since she lip synching be famous, she never mention Yang!then Lin said:"the uncle Zahgng said that my sounds is really sooooo great!when i dress rehearsal i was too hard working whith singing that i even had lost my voice!"and she participate in a variety od shows whith that red dress and her parents claim her"the Olypmic girl""red dress girl"and they even design lots of different singnatures for there deaguther.but look at Yang, what did she do afer Olympic?but she never complain!i am a chinese and i live in beijing,my home is near Yang's school.it is probably the best school around the Beijing!i love Yang and i do not she is worst than Lin.By the way there must be lots of grammer error there.i am not good at english very well, sorry!
