when i post here i have been told several times to look things up which i do but most of the time i post here because i want answers from experience not textbook i know that people respond to things and have experiences that end up in unusual way so looking it up wont help on those discussions and im more interested in figuring out the answer to things by grouping an opinion based upon everyones answers.. isnt that what mylot is about anyways?? i rather have street smarts than text book smarts since text book doesnt prepare you for the actual thing.. plus its more fun learning from others anyways anyone running into the whole "just look it up" replies?

I don't run into this much as I rarely have discussions now. The only time I've run into responses like that is when someone tries to turn answer-time into debate-time. Then when I DO look up and post things, its either silence, diversion, or more debating on their part.

got to love it when people try to start a debate then leave when they realize they will probably lose

hi moonlitmagikchild, well, i also prefer to give and get opinion instead of information that refer to some other source. if by some reason i have to refer to some source, i will quote and post it here. i believe the one who starts a discussion or asks something prefer get direct information than a link.

yeah and even if you are referring to a source you at least looked into it and think that that would be the most correct in your opinion so you are still giving something to it

i am usually the person that says 'look it up' because i feel that this is the only way you are going to learn. (of course it depends on what the subject is too!) but i find that some people are too lazy to look it up!

some are too lazy.. i just know that 90% of the time when i look up something i seem to get the totally opposite of what happens to me and to a lot of people.. i know the other day i was freaking out about a side affect i was having on a med and i had searched like 4 plus sites on the medication and none listed my side affect.. i post it in a few places asking and over half of them had had the same one and already asked their docs what to do about it.. turns out it wasnt really anything to worry about but all the sites are saying "if you are having side affects not listed go to the hospital immediately" worst thing you can say to a hypochondriac like me haha

I want to agree to you. I do respond to discussion based on my experiences, based on my true feelings, and the real me. If not my experience, it came from experiences of my friends and family. I am not that bookish, I dont also research when responding here in mylot. I just respond to discussion I can relate myself. I ignore those discussions that i know I have nothing to contribute. Thanks

Id rather street sense anyday. Alot of people out there are book smart but when it comes to street smarts they are oblivious, and its not always a good thing. For example, my brother, cool guy, valedictorian, smart guy... moving to a big city, he had no idea what to do. Didnt have a clue when he was getting ripped off, didnt have any idea about city living. Where I may not be the most smartest in the family, but id know how to handle myself in a scary situation if the problem arises. Id rather experience then text book anyday, because its not until your acutlaly in a situation that you know how it feels, how to react, what to do, etc.

yeah not to mention any examples in books never apply to real life situations.. or not enough or often to where they end up being helpful

I've gotten a few of those. I know i could find a textbook type instructional answer by googling it but I LOVE to ask what others have tried and had succeed. Its much more interesting. I like hearing the failures as well.

When it comes to responding on here, I prefer people that share personal opinions versus posting something that they might have just copied and pasted from here. I know that for me, I feel that if I cannot share something from my own personal experiences in here, than what good is it even taking time to respond. Just my thoughts.

i know i wouldnt see why people would waste their time in saying "look it up" to begin with?? guess they wanted to say something and had nothing else or something

Sometimes certain people will not like the opinions, I'm not sure why. If you get opinions, you have to be prepared, there may be a lot of negative opinions.

well i dont care if the opinions are differ than mine as long as you have one.. saying look it up doesnt even say which you think in the matter

I understand and feel exactly the same way. We can look anything up on the internet. Anything we could possibly want an answer for is there. But, as you say, they are "textbook" answers. I ask questions here for the same reason. I want personal experiences. I want to know how people dealt with whatever situation I'm asking about. "Looking it up" won't give you that! I've asked for shrimp recipes here. I know that there are thousands of them on the internet, but I wanted recipes tried by real people who have real opinions about them. Yep, myLot is here to give and receive opinions. If you don't believe me, look it up!

yes, That is what I am here for, I want to hear from people with experience in things and share what they learned. Although it is also good when someone share things from their research but I preferred hands on experience. Personal experience and how they overcome it or how they were able to find solution to it. Yes you are right!! it is fun learning from others. That's what we are here for. Sharing.. opinions and ideas.

Hi Moonlit, I suppose it's easier for them to send you a link, than to explain what they have read. You're right - I'd also prefer to see others' views of the article or info; rather than just reading the text itself, which means only my view. Many people see and interprete differently, so it's often refreshing to have their thoughts.

well some people dont even put a link they just tell you to look it up.. its always nice to see how people will word things to where it will make you think.. i know i started a few discussions and some one had answered in a way i totally didnt think about so that made it even more fun!!

As for me I have always answered here according to what I know and what I've experienced. What I know means maybe links form other sites, but I assure you I don't look into them the moment I see the discussion. If I see that I can't answer the question then I don't. I make sure that the questions I answer is something I know very well.

nope i don't get that, most here i feel want to tell you, or even copy and paste here as it means more earnings if the discussion is good length So therefore, mylotters are only too happy to totally explain anything here, unless of course don't know the answer, then maybe will say 'look it up' lol but i not come across that, only maybe someone may give a newbie advise to read the guidelines

I know what you mean. Same with me. I once asked someone on another site what their particular religion thought of something, what they, as members of their religion thought of it, and how they interpreted their religious doctrine. They gave me the doctrine, but would not give me their opinion. AARRGGHH!!!! If I wanted facts, I could have looked it up myself.
