I hear after 6 months you should throw them away. I thought the would be alright. since they are in Pickle Juice. And vinegar is in it. I just read it in the paper no that is not the case. Many refrigerator pickle recommend eating the pickles within 3 months. What do you think? How long do you keep your Pickles.

LOL if we have a jar of pickles in our house they never last beyond a week! So one thing that I never have to worry about is the best before date!.
But I think that if a jar did last longer than that then I would probably only keep it about 6 weeks.

Hi Marcie:)! It sure is good to be back--haven't logged here for the longest time ;) wow--I didn't know this about pickels! So it also goes for pickel relish I suppose? We normally use it for salads and the like and a bottle can last us for months--hmmm, maybe it'd be better if we buy the smaller bottles if we don't conusme too much of it right? Thanks for the tip & enjoy your day! :)

You throw them away when they start moving around the jar by themselves. :)
To tell you the truth I don't think I have ever thrown pickles away. I thought they could stay forever. Of course they get eaten quickly so I have never tested it.
Btw, I thought you were on Mylot vacation? Good to see you're back.

Hi there marciascott
I would say when you start to see the mould growing is usually a pretty good sign!! . I would have thought that 6 months was a long time. Did you keep them in the fridge? That does tend to prolong the life of such things!

I never thought Pickles spoiled or got mold in it because of the Vinegar. But I was wrong.

Gee, I didn't know that! Most of the time pickles don't last 6 months around here, so it isn't much of a worry. I always thought that if the pickles started to get mushy was when they were bad, and I also thought that the vinegar was a preservative of sorts. I will pay more attention to how long I keep them should a jar last longer than that time period. Better to be on the safe side than getting sick. Thanks for letting us know!

I didn't know that. I don't even keep track of how long we keep pickles and then I bought a jar of pickles so I could pickle some eggs in it afterwards. When I was growing up my aunt would do the same b/c she had cucumbers growing in her garden and we would have to wait about a month just for them to pickle. I know as soon as they were done we would eat them. What about in the olding days when the people would use pickling to store things for the winter? I wonder if they kept it for longer then 6 months. Didn't they start storing for the winter as soon as summer begin? I know people didn't live as long as they do now but do you think that they are coming up with stuff now a days that didn't matter back then or a couple of years ago?

Pickles don't last long in our house. I tend to sneak a couple for a snack if we have a jar open.
Even though they are preserved, they do have an expiry date and 3 months sounds about right for an opened jar. Vinegar produces gases too, and this actually ends up speeding up the process of the pickles going off. We did experiments with foods in high school, and the pickles went off just as quickly as a lot of the other foods like cheese and even soft drinks.
