Church Shopping

As some of you who read my posts may know, I've never been much of a church goer. I'm a good person and kind of naturally follow the Ten Commandments not to secure my place in heavan because that just how I happened to be. I'm nice to people, volunteer and accept everyone because that's how I choose to be. I have a child now and I'm moving to Meridian, MS with him on my own while his father stays in NM so that I can start working, not be isolated from day to day city things and from family - his family lives there. My husband is used to being on his own and I think he'll like the break for a few months until he joins us. With his WOW addictin he may not notice our abscence much. I want to join a church because I think the community would be good for my son and maybe even for myself. And sometimes you have to sacrifice for you child. I never wanted to join any churches, one because I like the responsibility tied in to being a steward of the earth and each other and the respect entailed in that in earth based religions and also because I'm super shy. But now, I want to join to give a little spiritual structure to my son but its all overwhelming. There are so many different KINDS of christianity. Baptist - and within that category - more choices, Presbyterian, Protestant (my dad's side of the family is Protestant, but never had much to do with him or them so doesn't help) and more. As I wrote to one member who is open about her religious views here on mylot, I also want to find a church - in the South no less- that welcomes anyone, Jewish, or Asian - my son is part Asian...whatever.... Please don't judge my reasons...I'm moving to a strange place to have the support of family, but even they lived somewhat outside of the city and I want a place I can draw support from and help out where I can. And again, to give my son some spiritual structure. I don't want a church that teaches hate or teaches that their interpretation of things is right above all others. But one that teaches what I believe God (by whatever name you give him) is Love. Be good for the sake of being good, not to be rewarded, respect other and yourself. Do not love any other god before him - and to me, that includes the God of Lust, gambling, drinking, drugs etc. He's kind of a jealous god that way, but I agee because my main tenant is respect, respect yourself, others and your environment, and when you have an addiction, allow this, you are not respecting yourself or others. I know how hard it is, both of my parents are alcoholics. My mom is my favourite person, was a working alcholic - got through her work day and then started drinking...and she knows deep down she is - she is sneaking it now that she's recovered from cancer. We know but don't talk about it, she's 74 and by now our efforts are futile. Different subject though!

I don't think that's a bad reason at all for wanting to go to church. There are some very nice people there, and the community and fellowship will be good for you and your son. I'm not sure which type you are looking for... but if you don't mind charismatics.. then I would recommend an Assemblies of God church. There are some of the best people there, who have genuine hearts. You could also attend a Vineyard church, depending upon where you are... they are very nice as well! Good luck with the move!

That's the question of the day - what I'm looking for - that's what I need help with! Isn't Baraak Obama a member of the Assemblies of God? I'll have to see if they have one of these in Meridian Mississippi. That's what I'm looking for - those with genuine hearts!

You know what, I don't even know what Charismatics is - I can guess - maybe really boisterous praying?

There is an Assemblies of God Church there but not Vineyard. Thanks! I will call them tomorrow. Can I just show up?

Here is a link you may find interesting. It's a link to Church of Christ, see link below. I'm sure one will be in the area you are locating to. http://www.gbntv.org/

Wow they have Chinese materials - that would be my husband's family - so my baby would fit in. I think though it might be a huge church - I'll check it out on my computer later - I have sound. I think its a little too flashy for me. I guess to me I wish I could go to a little white clapboard church, something more humble, not preachers in expensive suits. And easier for a shy person to deal with. I will check it out though. :)

True, but a church without the thousand dollar suits seems more genuine. I attended a christmas service in a big city years ago - huge church - with beautiful huge chandeliers and the rest of the church and the preacher made it clear that the money collected didn't go to the congregation that obviously cost a lot and rather then nuns going around to collect money there were guys in expensive suits. And the sermon? Was on on not being caught up in the monetary world - it was about giving your money to the church and not buying expensive things. To be humble in that regard. I'll check out this church when I change computers - I can see our toddler playing frm this computer. I'm experimenting keeping him up later because he's been going to sleep at seven then waking up at two am and wanting to play!!!

No one should be concerned about what you are wearing. I doubt you'll have any problems. Even if it isn't that particular congregation, there should be one close by.
