Do you close your eyes when you think hard?

Think Hard - Do you close your eyes when you think hard? I don't.

I have just discovered that when I am thinking hard and wanted to concentrate on something, I don't close my eyes. I just keep them open. It seems when I can concentrate more with my eyes open. But I am not looking at anything, just staring blankly. I am thinking that is also the reason why I can't sleep at night when I am thinking of something very important. How about you, do you have to close your eyes when you want to concentrate on your thinking? When you think harder, with eyes closed or open?

A good question. And when I'm thinking of this I am keeping my eyes open the same as when I am thinking really hard. I do as you I stare off into space not looking at anything. or seeing anything. My grand-daughter has asked me numerous times what am I looking at when in all actuality I am just thinking. This must be the reason I don't fall asleep either, lol. I have to literally tell myself go to sleep. and my mind shutup and leave me alone so I can go to sleep, lol. It's weird and a bit funny now that I think about it.

It really seems funny now that I am aware of it. And funnier when others find you looking at nothing in particular. Now I think I can tell when someone is thinking hard, or thinking of something important. Have a nice day!

When I'm thinking or even trying to imagine things, I seem not to close my eyes at all. My eyes however stray differently when I'm either thinking factual or imaginative.. Even though my eyes would look upward, it would often stray rightward for imagination and leftward when I'm thinking for something serious.. like equating a mathematical problem

Not much on logical thinking, you say? Seems like your at ease if you don't do that often

I don't notice if I am looking upward or sidewards when I am thinking. I think I am just looking straight forward. I mostly do this when I try to remember something from the past or imagine something for the future. I don't do a lot of logical thinking lately. Have a nice day!

I don;t THINK I do no! I am pretty sure that when I am thinking hard I tend to look to the ceiling or all around me rather than close my eyes. I probably do stare blanlky like you do as well and even though I may be looking upwards or around me I am not staring at anything in particular, Rather I am getting in the zone and my mind is far too busy to really notice anything else! lol.

I too keep my eyes open. But I would just be looking into space and may not be aware of what is going on around me.

Exactly. I am just looking into space and not looking at anything in particular because I am really concentrating on what I am thinking. It's like some kind of day dreaming. And it is sometimes amazing to think that I am looking INTO my mind this way. The human body is really amazing. Have a nice day!

You made a very good observation there! I find it so witty of you! Well, at times I have to close my eyes when thinking or concentrating because I would not want to be distracted by things around me. I believe I can greatly focus on the the issue if I would close my eyes. But there are also case when I would just stare blankly but my mind is on the thing I was concentrating on. But I think most of the time I prefer to just close my eyes so I could think better without any disturbance from the outside. Have a nice day!

Thanks for the remark. I first thought this is just a trivia. But you made me proud of it! I think I can concentrate more with eyes open because when I close my eyes when I am thinking, other things which are not really relevant to what I am thinking comes to my mind. It seems it is easier for me to lose focus when my eyes are closed. Have a nice day!

Well it really depends if the problem requires a lot of visual attention I try not to close my eyes otherwise I do because it's helping me to focus better on the solutions.

It seems I am also closing my eyes when thinking about mathematical problems if I don't have the time to write it down. The left and right part of the brain have different functions and I've heard from ratyz5 above that looking at different directions while thinking signifies what part of the brain you are using. But I am thinking closing and opening our eyes while thinking may be a gauge too. Have a nice day!

I guess it pretty much depends for me. When I'm aggitated and annoyed I can't think of something and I feel it's right there but it doesn't come out, I close my eyes trying to blank out everything around me and dig deeper into my memory. When I am concentrating hard in class or school for a regular occassion I focus at one point/person with my eyes slightly narrowed. It was fun to think about this, I never actually paid attention to it but we do a lot more then we think! haha! .

Yup, usually I do. It makes a difference to me because when I close my eyes, I remove my sense of sight, and that helps to focus the other senses. So somehow, it sometimes helps if I close my eyes when I need to think hard. Other times, I find myself functioning fine too with eyes open. Cheers!

I do not close my eyes when concentrating on something. I found this to be true with other people as well and when I see someone staring blankly into space I know that their minds have taken a leave of absence from the present environs.

I do.When I close my eyes I release very important resource,my imagination.I used to do this when I am trying to get a grip on complex problem.Listen and visualize what I hear.Weird a bit but works great for me.

It depends I never thought nor observed it really but I guess so. I'll try to carefully observe it in the coming days. I probably do both. It depends.

lol.....ireally dont know.....i tried to think about it and notice wether my eyes were open or close while thinking........guess what i found that i cant think while trying to notice wether my eyes are open or close , but speaking professionaly it is a general tendency of people to do sumthing different when think real hard to enhance concentration or sumtimes....like a computer while loading sum computers show regular % loading , sum show graphs , sum show any design moving, its just the way humans are doing sumthing while thinking shows that they are manipulating or thinking...sum close their eyes , sum will scratch their head or chin and ways like this...try thinking with a straight face once and you`ll notice that the brain is not processing your thought....like i personally give a frowned expression while thinking....

usually when i think about something very hard i don't even realize it until later, and i have to bring myself down to reality again. i don't close my eyes, but i realized that usually think hard when listening to music or driving a car. at night, i spend at least 2 hours before i fall asleep thinking about nothing and everything at the same time, with my eys closed obviously. so i think it just depends, whatever helps you concentrate better. sometimes you need to close your eyes and isolate yourself in order to really understand.

Closing one's eyes is one way of blocking out the visual distractions. I sometimes close my eyes when I'm trying to remember something I've read or where I've put something. It is as if I have to "see" it again and need the "blank screen" of my eyelids to project the memory onto. So, yes I do sometimes close my eyes when I'm thinking.

haha.. Smae here, i dun close my eyes when i'm thinking hard.. AT most i will just stare blindly into space.. lol =D The only time i will close my eyes is when i'm dozing off or sleeping.. lol =D ANd if i were to close my eyes and think, the likelihood of me falling asleep is much much higher than me thinking of a solution.. lol =D

It depends actually. If I want to remember something I always try to find the thing I associated it with. Songs and music is one thing that I usually attach my thoughts to, so it's always easy, since I'm always listening to music. But sometimes, yes, I close my eyes real tight when I'm thinking about something that I just need to remember. Usually happens during an examination bourne

I look sorta up and to the side whenever I am thinking hard, kinda like people do in movies. Sometimes I sorta space out and people think I'm staring at them. it's pretty funny.

my eyes are open when i am thinking really hard. i focus on a certain object without really seeing it and i became oblivious to everything around me. and i sometimes put my right hand flat on the side of my face.
