i have this fear everytime i come to visit the dentist. my hands get cold and clammy.. maybe it's due to a childhood experience with a dentist.. for me they are like monsters who would take all my teeth away :-(
how about you? do you feel the same?

I HATE the dentist. I hate needles and I don't want anybody coming near my head or face with a needle!!

I have never had a fear of the dentist. I have had my teeth cleaned and had cavities filled and shots in my mouth and all and still it is ok. The shots don't bother me at all. My husband is deathly afraid of the dentist though and breaks out in a cold sweat at the mere thought of visiting.
I have had 4 children by c-section so I guess the whole trauma of surgery compared to going to the dentist is nothing at this point. I really don't know any other explanation for me.

A bit. The second last time I went to the dentist I had a wisdom tooth taken out, it was close to Christmas and if I had known how long it would affect me for I wouldn't have got it done then. I was scared if I didn't just get him to take the tooth out then, that I wouldn't have the courage to go back and get it taken out.
My little nephews went recently and the dentist let the 5 year old wear his white coat and pretend to look in the 3 yr old's mouse. The 5 year old told the dentist he loved him. I don't know if he feels that friendly anymore because he then had to go back and get a filling or a tooth pulled!

You know, I think I'm the weird one in here, 'cause I never been afraid of it at all.. Ok, it can sometimes hurt a bit, but I can handle that.
The fact that I have a very friendly dentist helps also, but I never had anything to fear about it.. I knew that the mask is one of the factors that scares children and so, but the "dental drill" is the champion when the topic is "who is more fearsome?".. xD

I use to be scared to go to the dentist when I was younger. My mom would have to give me something to calm me down just so I would go. The first time I ever went they didn't give me anything to numb my gums I was about 5 and he pulled one of my teeth. After that I didn't want to go. Now I have a really good dentist he is fast and makes sure your not in pain. The people there are very nice. I don't mind going now.

I am TERRIFIED of the dentist!
I am sure that this stems from the time when I went to a dentist years ago, I was really hard to numb, and the dentist kept drilling anyway even though I was screaming bloody murder!
I don't want to ever go back to a dentist after that!
The minute I even think about a d----, I nearly have a panic attack!

Hello glay22.
I do not have a fear of dentists. But I think it's quite common when people have fears of their dentists. You may be right, perhaps when you were younger, something the dentist did or said frightened you. My husband abhors dentists and he says it's because he's had to have so much work done on his teeth that has hurt him so much.
I think it's helpful to tell the dentist that you are afraid to go there and that you get "cold and clammy". I say this because one of my sisters told her dentist's office how scared she got. And she says they are so kind, careful, gentle, and encouraging with her each time she goes. They apparently noted it in her chart and pay extra special attention to help her relax.
Good luck, glay22.

I am terrified to go to the dentist. I cried last time I went to the dentist. I know that is bad at my age, but it's just that I was just so afraid. I guess it was because I was having a tooth pulled. I then got dry socket after the tooth was pulled and then had to go back to the dentist twice more to have the hole where the tooth was packed. I just don't enjoy dentists very much.

HATE, HATE, HATE going to the dentist! I have extremely sensitive teeth, so when they're doing the cleaning, it feels like they hit exposed nerves every so often. SO painful! So now I'm looking for a place that does consious sedation denistry. They give you meds so you don't remember the whole thing. Costs more, but I just can't handle the pain anymore.
On the plus side, I've been able to avoid having my teeth cleaned for 18 months now by using a Sonicare toothbrush. I've gone in for my 6-month appointments, and they just send me home since my teeth don't have tarter buildup.

I have the same too, I really feel nervous when I must take away my tooth. I think it is normally feeling. I think I don't afraid with the dentist but with the tools or equipment. So now I brush my teeth and keep it as good as I can then I don't need to afraid to meet the dentist.

I was never afraid during my childhood. However during my last visit to one, wherein I wanted to pull out a tooth, the guy scared me informing me that pulling out a tooth for me would make my body go through a lot of trauma because of the treatment that I was going through for another condition. Have got over that now and should not be having any fears. Will know for sure only once I visit one for the next time.

Dear friend,
Only twice I had seen dentist that too during child hood days and form that day on wards I brushed every day twice and no more to see dentist. My childhood experience and pain might had make me to care my teeth to avoid that pain from dentist. Hope and wish I may not further want to go to dentist.

I am not afraid of going to the dentist except for maybe what the cost may be. I don't like to go but am I glad I went especially after a cleaning, my mouth feels good. I tend to get cavities pretty easily so I am really excited when I go in for a checkup and they find no cavities and I do no have to return for 6 months or so. I really don't like the shots of Novacaine. Last time they had to give me extra because I would not numb up. It felt like my mouth was numb for the rest of the day, yuck!!!! I hope you can someday get over your fear. Good luck!

Well I actually miss my dentist. I really need to go to the dentist to have my oral health maintained and take cared off. Don't be afraid of your dentist you should be more afraid of the things that might happen to your teeth if you don't visit yours.
