" Compact fluorescents save big money and look good doing it."After, hearing again and again, I changed all those electric bulbs and other lights to these kind of energy savers ( photo attached )..
But, believe me, I still get the same electricity bills...It did no difference...
If I get a branded one, will it make any difference,...What is your experience, have you used it to save money?

hi, i never care about such things, normally i deposit a certain amount of money, enough for at least 3 months, then i'll never think about it again until the deposit use up. so let alone let me buy something about the bulb or things like that. :)

I think they work. They dont work as much as people think they are going to and it all depends on how much electricity you really use, but I think they work as much as possible

We have the generic bulbs and they did help out electric bill. The reason you are not seeing a huge change is that even though you are using less, the fuel cost is going up. Check out the actual usage amounts on your bill, I bet they have gone down.

When I switched ALL the lights in my house over to compact flourescents, I saw at least a $30 savings per month in my electric bill. Perhaps you're overlooking a new source of energy drain. Did you acquire any new appliances or electronics during this time?
Anyway, I was excited about wanting to help the environment as well as save a few bucks. Something I saw recently has me questioning this idea however. I read that although an incandescent bulb uses more watts, it is safer for the environment and is completely recyclable. You can just dispose of it in the trash. The glass "could' be recycled. So can the filament and the metal casing. Whereas flourescent bulbs are treated with toxic gas on the inside and can be dangerous if handled should you drop and break it. They shouldn't be thrown in the trash because the toxins are harmful to the environment. The glass cannot be reused because it is treated with a poisonus gas. They are more expensive to purchase than incandescent bulbs. Now I'm not so confident in using them as I was before.

hey there intimate36, I think it's very hard to calculate that type of things. it is as hard as calculating how you earn on MyLot. You don't see how much electricity you are using. Maybe you used it on other stuffs. It's hard unless you seriously do an experiment like making sure you are using the same electrical appliances for the same amount of time with last months. ^^

O k .... you have given the best example...I like it, and I love it...it is as hard as calculating how you earn on MyLot.
Great.. this is an art..giving correct examples is not always easy..thanks for response...

I do believe that it would help you save a little amount but not so much unless if you would change your way of using your things in the house like you have to make it off when it is not needed and then do not let the wire remain in the outlet when it is not in use......

i also haven't seen any changes in my electricity bill even though i also had changed all the bulbs in my house into an energy saving bulb... i don't know about the bulb that you post in the picture... honestly speaking, i never use it before... so i don't know how much it will help in reducing the electricity bills... take care and have a nice day...

some one from MYLOT members ,mentioned that , it is difficult to calculate the consumption of electricity...just like calculating your earnings on MYLOT...
thanks for sharing your views with me..

Your lighting may just be a small part of your electricity bill. The energy-saving bulbs really DO only use what they say on the box but you have to consider all the other things that use electricity in your house.
If your water is heated by electricity, turn the thermostat down so that the hot water is a few degrees cooler. Not only will you save money heating the water that extra degree or so (that you inevitably have to cool down with cold water before you take a bath, shower or wash your hands) but if your system stores hot water in a tank, the heat wasted simply by having the hot water stored ready for use is less.
You may have a fridge and a freezer. There is little you can do to save electricity here except by buying new, more efficient models but your freezer should be as full as it can be (within reason). Cold food takes much longer to heat up than an empty freezer, so the fuller it is, the less work the freezer has to do to keep it cool. If you are constantly going to the fridge to take out a drink or other things, remember that every time you open the door, a flood of cold air pours out and is, of course, replaced by warm air from the room! Make sure that you open the fridge as little and for as little time as possible.
Do you have a TV and is it left on standby when you are not watching it? A TV on standby uses a considerable amount of electricity and if it is on standby all day, it is surprising how much that adds up! Switch it off (or pull the plug) when you are not watching!
If you cook with electricity, plan your cooking so that the oven, for example, is used for a number of things. In the old days, when ovens were heated by lighting a fire inside them and then raking it out when the oven was hot enough, cooks and bakers would plan their baking so that things that needed a hot oven went in first and then were followed by things that needed a medium oven and finally a cool oven. You can try to do something similar with an electric oven - or, at least, plan your cooking so that it is all done at once.
How many times a week do you run the washing machine and do you use the cooler settings? Most detergents these days are designed to work best at 30-40 celsius and there is no point in using a hotter wash. If you have a dryer, try to only use it for things that NEED drying quickly. If you can dry clothes on a line outside, do so as much as possible. Many people, of course, can't do that if they don't have the space outside or the weather is bad or the air is too polluted! Nevertheless, if you are trying to save money, it is surely better to have washing drying in the house (untidy though it may be) than to spend precious cents blowing hot air through the dryer's vents to heat the outdoors!
Heating (and cooling, if you have it) are, of course, one of the biggest power guzzlers. You should turn your heating thermostat down a notch. 20 centigrade may be comfortable but 19 is far more economic and, if you are chilly, wear more clothes! If the day is just a little warm but not unbearably so, turn the air conditioning OFF altogether, don't leave it ticking over. Every time it starts up, it has to use power to reach the right temperature, so if it is constantly starting and stopping, it can use more power than if it is on all the time.
Finally, to return to your lighting. The energy-saving bulbs do take less energy BUT they are more expensive to buy and will only really last a lot longer if they are not switched on and off frequently! It's best to use them in places where you need light all the time such as hallways and stairs. Other lights, such as desk lamps and table lamps should only be turned on when you really need them - and turned off when you are not using them, of course!

It is really good , to have a detailed response...
For cooking and heating , we has natural gas connection .My country has a large gas field..
We use micro oven ,only for heating our food.My city climate is hot, so no heaters..and I do not use Air conditioners.
We use washing machine , twice a week , as we have a hot weather , we do not use dryers..
Now , come to T V.....Yes , I often leave it on stand by mode ,mostly at night..And I will make sure it is unplugged ...Thanks dear, have a nice day...

I primarily use the cfc bulbs. I think my electric bill is usually moderate not high like the bills some people complain about. I try to be conscious of how much electric I am using and dry some of my clothes outside so I dont need to use the dryer all of the time. I think it is the best thing i can do under the circumstances.

I think the price of electricity has risen so much over the last year or two and continues to rise so that it is difficult to compare costs of using different appliances or energy saving bulbs. It may be better to compare the number of units used. Its like those foods that are supposed to help us lose weight but must be used 'as part of a calorie-controlled diet'. The energy saving bulbs may help a bit but we have to cut down on energy consumption in general

Well in my opinion you should get something of lower wattage so that your electricity bill would go down. If still that doesn't work better check your electricity provider for they might have increased their rates.

I think it is with the electricity getting higher. My parents did that too. And constantly remind us about power saving. Now, when I use the computer, I dont use the lights because I can see everything even the light only is coming from the monitor. Everything is unplug when not in use. And I notice there is a big change in the electricity bill, if I will convert it to US dollars, its more than $20.

The previous posters brought up some good points about the electricity being more expensive. Another thing to keep in mind is that in the summertime the rates for electricity goes up because of the added electrical demand to run air conditioners and all that to keep cool with. If you are still getting the same electricity bills, then maybe you ARE saving money, because if the bulbs weren't helping at all, then due to the price increase in power you would then have a higher bill than normal. (Gee, I hope I explained what I'm trying to say right lol but I think you get the drift of what I'm saying)

Well, if you think it is beneficial to you i think that is great. In my own opinion if it speaks about electricity or wiring I go for branded one becuase I am afraid that if i go with non it will explode, your house might get burned..But if that non-branded one is a good quality then why not go for it when you have have it for less.
