a monster!

Okay I was doing my picking of veggies from my various gardens today. As I found a few regulare sized pickles I moved the lattice work from the cucumber bed and found this monster behind it against the foundation of the house. This thing measures 7 and 7/8 inches long and 8 1/2 inches in diamater at the biggest spot. This will make one whole quart of sliced or wedged dill pickles for me. The last discussion I had about a large pickle it was just 6 inches long. Hahaha! What is the largest pickle you have ever seen? Do you have fairs that sell pickles on a stick? At the Minnesota State Fair they seell them for $3 and they are smaller than this one.

That is a very big one. What is the largest you have grown? You need to try to grow something that will be big enough to make the world record. I think you could do it for sure. I can only remember big pickles in a big jar at the movies or used to, not sure about now, could buy a big pickle, either dill or sour, your choice, in a bag at the store. Makes my mouth pucker just thinking about those. No, I have never seen pickles sold on a stick before.

Here is the cinnamon pickle recipe.CINNAMON PICKLE RINGS
Peel, core and slice enough cucumbers to make 2 gallons. Mix and pour over cucumbers, 2 cups lime and 8 quarts water; soak 24 hours. Drain, wash and soak 4 hours in cold water. Drain and pour the following mixture over cucumbers and simmer 2 ours.
1 tbsp. alum
1 c. vinegar
1 oz. red food coloring
Enough water to cover pickles
Drain and place in crock or enamel pan.
Cover with the following:
2 c. vinegar
2 c. water
10 c. sugar
6 sticks cinnamon
1 lg. pkg. red hots (5 1/2 to 8 oz. pkg.)
Heat this to boiling making sure red hots are dissolved before pouring over pickles.
Let set 24 hours. Drain, reheat syrup and pour back over pickles. Let set another 24 hours. Drain off syrup and add 1 teaspoon canning salt. Reheat syrup. While syrup is heating pack pickles in sterilized jars.
Cover with boiling syrup and seal. These are made as round as possible as they are very attractive on dinner plate as well as tasty.
The friend who shared these with me also made them green with food color. Not sure if she left the red hots out, or not. You could use cinnamon oil, or even peppermint, I guess. She served them together at Christmas.
I never made these, but ate them and they were yummy in a tangy sweet sort of way.

It's funny you mention fairs - I may be going to one Thursday the next county over from us. I can't remember the last time I went to a fair but know it's been a long time.
That is a big cucumber I've had some really big ones over the years but never really bothered to measure them - I should do that, I had a green bean a few weeks ago that had to have been a foot long. Was going to take a picture of it but got side tracked on something else and the poor thing shriveled up on the table before I remembered it :(

I go to the Anoka County fair near me almost every year.
And I have never missed the Minnesota State Fair in 35 years as a resident of Minnesota. Minnesota State Fair is I think the 2nd largest State Fair in the USA. The grounds is actually a whole city. please, this is not a cucumebr per say, it
is a pivckling cucumber. A regular cucumebr will get much much larger in a short period of time.

I'm sure I have regular cucumbers - the few I've gotten came on and got big really fast.

Very impressive size, Grandpa Bob. And it is nice and straight as well. I believe that means that you have excellent cross pollenation taking place in your garden. I think I read that some where...... I'm no expert.

It is so straight as it is a pickling cucumber not a regular cucumber.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! That is really big, GB! I have only seen smaller ones or the average sizes. We don't have any fairs here locally that sell pickles on a stick, not that popular here. Fairs here usually sell barbecues, candies and all those meaty products but it is seldom that they will sell any type of vegies.
Take care always..God Bless!

Well that's a bummer.
The pickle on a stick goes over well at the State fair here.

Do you use a special fertilizer in your garden? That's HUGE!
I hope you know that you're teaching me a lot and if my garden is successful next year it'll be largely thanks to you!

I use nothing on any of my garden plants or flowers.
I plant, weed, water, harvest, and eat is all.
Some areas I have added homemade compost this year.
But none of the cucumber beds.

This as well as the other huge one were hidden under leaves of the plant.
I did not find them when I first picked so they got bigger each time.
No secret, just didn't see them at the right time.

I imagine they sell them here too, I just never bought one. One of my worst nightmares I ever had came after I ate a monster Garlic Dill Grandma had made as a bed time snack. She made those in gallon jars. We also used to get big pickles in a vending machine in school. When I was young kids liked sour things, now it is just sweets. I do have a recipe for cinnamon pickles, gave it to another friend here. If you want it, PM me. It makes a pickle ring, and they are sweet. You color them, as well.

I do love the large dill pickles. Here in CA I have not seen dill pickles in a barrel in a long time. I have not seen them on a stick in as long also. I have not gone to our local fair in years also. It is in July and so hot when the fair is going on I do not want to fight the crowds nor the heat.
