Neighbor has fleas in their house and yard. they can not afford an exterminator so I told them what I have done to get rid of them. First I bought a couple of cans of flea spray for carpets and a bottle of malathian. Had the dogs inside while I sprayed the entire yard with the malathian. then I sprayed the downstairs with the carpet treatment, took my 2 small dogs upstairs & washed them thoroughly. Put new flea collars on (this was before frontline plus was invented) Ran back downstairs and put 1/2 a flea collar in my new vacuum cleaner bag, vacuummed real good. then brought the dogs downstairs. treated the upstairs, waited a few (to give it time to kill fleas) then vacuumed upstairs. THEN I took the vacuum cleaner all the way out to the edge of the yard and replaced the bag with the other half of the flea collar. Kept a flea collar in the vacuum bag for several months after that. the fleas and flea eggs get sucked up into the vacuum and then they DIE. Now that there is frontline stuff I don't have a flea problem. what do you do to get rid of fleas without chemicals?

I heard of a home remedy for fleas. You take a little bowl of dish soap[dawn] and heat it within a bowl by a candle or something like that, and supposedly it gets rid of fleas, however for the four dogs I have they have pills they take that actually gets rid of the fleas, haven't had a problem since. Best to call your vet and ask them, medications for animals in the flea area can get expensive, see whats cheap etc.

agreed - going to vet for flea prevention is best. neighbors are the ones with the problems. they try to live "natural" - health food, etc. they are vegetarians and I have wondered if they make their dogs be vegetarians too (LOL)
