There are different strokes of how you peel fruits and vegetables. Some peels going towards and some do it going outward of your body. I for one, have been used to peel fruits and vegetables going towards my body. I don't know, but I've seen some who does it going outward and I've tried to do it but I wasn't successful. LOL. How about you? How do you peel? towards? or outwards? Happy Postings to all. HUGZ!

Depending on the size and weight of the fruits or vegetables, if the size can be hold by my left hand, then I can peel it using a peeler towards my body making sure that it will not damage my left hand. If it is big then I put it in a piece of wood then peel using a peeler going down.

I do that also. If what I will be peeling is big enough that my left hand can't hold. I do it outwards. But I'm not comfortable using a peeler, I use knife instead. HUGZ!

I had to think for a minute or two before replying. I always peel vegetables and fruits towards me. I dont think I would be able to peel it outward.

I am very much uneasy peeling fruits and vegetables with backward stroke. I mean, peeling them backward is also a bit dangerous for the knife may slip and you might be hurt. You should try to do it the other way as I always do. It's safe than the way you used to do it. (neildc @ red/89/1665)

Well I peel it away from me simply because I don't want the skin going to me. Apparently there are urban legends that if you peel towards your body then you are a thrifty person otherwise if you feel away from your body you spend a lot.

You're right. It doesn't matter on what direction you're going to peel as long as you peeled it. LOL. HUGZ

I try to leave peels on fruits and veggies as often as I can...it's less wasteful and more nutritious. When I do peel them I usually peel away from me...less dangerous

I peel everything towards my body. It is much easier on the fingers and the hold is also firm of the knife and the veg. I have tried doing it the other way and ended up with a huge chunk of the vegetable out with the peel. lol.

I dun peel vegetables because i dun eat them.. haha.. For fruits, i will peel them outwards and it's always the case, for fear that if one peel inwards, the cutter will cut us if we are careless.. hehe =D BUt i seldom peel my fruits too as the skin on the fruits are actually healthy.. Research also staes that eating fruits with the skin unpeeled is much more healthier than a peel fruit ^_^ hehe

I guess I peel vegetables going away from me but peel fruit (like apples) going towards me! I never really thought about it or realized that until I saw your post. Strange huh?!

We have the same stroke my dear. I can't do it outward always toward my body. I've mastered that stroke already. My niece would tell me why I am doing that way but I told them that is the right way. Of course it's actually case to case basis. Whichever way we feel comfortable is alright. For as long as we don't cut any part of our body. Isn't it?

OH yes my friend, whatever we feel comfortable whether it's outward or towards doesn't matter as long as you don't get cut. HUGZ!

I always peel the vegetables and the stroke that I used is outward from my body for this is the things I knew from my parents.....and I also notice that there were also who have successfully peel the vegetable inward but I cannot do it by myself......

Hi dhangski, You have the same style with my husband...I am more comfortable doing it outwards as well as my Parents and Sister! I used to meet people using the same and it is always uncomfortable for me to watch people peeling it towards their body!

i am a left-handed person and most of my life i've been peeling towards my body. i used to be so worried about cutting my fingers with the sharp blade. things are generally made for right-handed people so i've got to make do. however, recently i managed to get a peeler made for left-handed people. now i can peel outwards away from my body. now i can peel much faster and without worrying about my fingers all the time. cheers ;p

I do peel fruits and vegetables if I can. I believe it can keep me away from dirt and pesticide, which is very important to my health. Peasant use too much pesticide and no one inspect them and so I am not sure if the fruits and vegetables are clean or not. So for sake of my health, I will peel them.

I can't peel outwards either, it's so strange! Like my hands don't want to go that way, they want to peel towards me.

I used to peel towards myself up until I took a home ec class in high school, where the teacher made us peel away from our bodies for sake of safety (apparently someone poked himself in the stomach with the eye-gauger of a potato peel, and since it was still really sharp, needed stitches). So now I peel away from myself. I bought one of those peelers that fits on your finger like a ring (available at most houseware shops for ~$5), and I find that gives me better control and less slipping. Also, when pushing away from myself, the peels are more likely to land in the trash can:)
