I was just responding to a discussion about Vicks vapor rub on your feet being a good cure for a cough and it made me think of the several home remedies that I have tried in the past few years. I was wondering do you believe that home remedies work?
What home remedies have you tried and did they work? I have used Vicks Vapor Rub on my feet to cure an under the nail fungus as well as using it to get rid of coughs and colds. I also have used a combination of lemon juice, vinegar, and honey warmed up and drank warm to get rid of a cough. It did work well.

I trust in MY OWN home remedies than I do modern medicine. I once was in bed for 3 days with the fever and taking all the fancy pills from my doctor to help...on the morning of the third day I got up, said I was tired of being sick, mixed some lemon juice and peppermint oil with a bit of salt and drank it...1 hour later I was right as rain, it totally cut the fever.

I have never heard of that one. I will have to remember it. Is it just for a fever? Thanks for sharing with us.

One my mother swears by and I still do it till today is for an ear ache. You heat up olive oil on a spoon .. just to get it warm .. put it in your ear and put a cotton ball in it .. lay with the sore ear up and let the olive oil settle in .. what it does is melts any wax that is in your ear and sooths the pain .. it works every time :)

I have tried several of home remedies particularly suggestd by my mother and grand mother. They know several of them. For example, if you have cold they will give a drink consisting of pepper and other spices. Although cold will not vanish, you will get some relief. For indigestion you need to drink butter milk with salt and ginger. If you have a wound, you need to apply turmeric paste. several books have been written that describe various home remedies.
Different ingredients used for preparing food can be used for several problems such as cold cough and body ache. For example, oil that we use for preparatin of food can be applied on body parts to give relief. At the same time, they may not give permanent relief from a disease but you can use them for temporary relief.

I believe that my grandmother could have given us a long list of medicines that worked but I don't know that she ever used home remedies for anything. I know that most of the things come from food and that is a good thing as most of us have the items at home.

I have tried the chicken soup routine for getting rid of a cold, and it does work. I also tried the honey, lemon, cayenne pepper, and ginger in hot water and it worked as well. I have not tried the vinegar one yet, but I suppose since I add all the supposed to be good ingredients to the hot water and lemon, I would try that as well.
I have not tried the Vicks except to get rid of a chest cold and I do not get fungus, so I do not know if it will work. I have tried yogurt for a fungus infection, but so far it has been unsuccessful and I would rather eat it than put it in down there.. NOw I just clean with a non-allergic soap in that area.
However, I have put vinegar on a mosquito or bee sting and that works.
I have heard that apple cider vinegar is good, but so far have not tried it.

I use Garlc for infections, like for abscessed teeth and other things, it is also good for the heart. My husband makes a ginger tea for colds and fevers and it does work. He loves the stuff, I dont so much, but it works for us.
We hardly ever take medicine it is always herbs or something natural.

Hi,
For abcessed teeth I take garlic capsules (odorless.. lol) When I feel one coming on I take 4 at that time and then 4 again that night or morning. I then take 2 every morning and night and within 3-5 days Im good as news.
I have friends that thought I was nuts but they tried it and they said that it worked for them too. Which of course I say .. Told ya.. lol I have never had someone say it didnt work.
Of course you dont take them all the time, just like regular meds your body can get used to them and then they dont work as good. Hope this helps.

How does garlic work for abcessed teeth? Do you eat it or what? I am very interested in that. Please explain more about it. I have heard that ginger tea is good for upset stomach too.

Some do, some don't.
The one most Trinidadians have for the cough is lime juice and sugar on the tip of your tongue and then swallow.
They also recommend a good drink of lime with puncheon rum.
This rum is a particularily strong brew made in Trinidad or Guyana.
They do work - sometimes.

even i believe in home remedies as it works for me n hence use it whenever i feel that i m not well or so.
when i have cold i use a home remedy of steaming for two days which reduces my cold n relives me.
when i have any body pain i use some ayurvedic oils to cure it.
there r several methods which we can use it for several problems we comeacross in our daily life. but there r people who dont believe in home remedies n not even try it but i think home remedies r much better as they dont cause u any side effects like how medicines causes n its everytime better to try home emedies first n then consult a doctor if ur problem is not comming down or getting cured.

I agree with you. I don't like to use a lot of medicines just because of the side effects and the cost of prescription medicines. I like home remedies too.

Yes i have seen people overcome diseases like diabities and gout by simple home remedies. I got encouraged by this and am personall having warm water with lemon and honey daily in the morning to cut down on some extra fat i have put up. I would be able to tell the results in a months time. By the kind of results i have seen among those who have actually followed this i am very positive on this.

I totally believe in home remedies, they almost always work for me for any ailment I have. I have a friend who is a homeopathic therapists and another who is a B.E.S.T. (Bio Engergetic Synchronization Technique)therapists. Between the two of them they can always cure me whether it is asthma and allergies or back pain. They both have a wide range of home remedies that they suggest. In the case that doesn't work I use the B.E.S.T. and that works on everything the home remedies don't and it still isn't taking medicine! The great thing about home remedies and the B.E.S.T. is that even if it doesn't work it won't hurt you. With medicine it may not work and you are risking adverse reactions.

Hi friend ,I believe in home remedies only to some extent.bcoz cure is very slow and not like having medicines, there is an immediate relief after taking medicines only.I suffer from acidity if I dont exercise,so I tried all home remedies for immediate relief, but no use.so I take medicines for immediate relief.I feel home remedies are good for health but immediate relief is only when you take medicines.thanks for sharing, happy mylotting.

The only bad thing with medication is that the side effects of most of them are worst than what is wrong with you. I am not saying that I don't take medications, I just watch for the effects and I try to make home remedies if I can before I get the medication.

i think home remedies are sometimes even better that the proper medicine, for they have no side effects
its said that an indian kitchen can cure you of most ailments
like turmeric is antiseptic as well as a pain killer
rub it on a cut n u need no antiseptic
boil it in milk n drink it hot (add sugar) n it'll take away ur pain

I guess we all need to stock our kitchen with Indian spices then and maybe the cost of health care will go down. LOL. I do think that spices help cure a lot of things too.

You also try a hot "salabat", you boil a peeled ginger then drink it. It is also good when you put some sugar or honey in it. You also try any bug of tea for under nail fungus. You soak it with warm water with your feet in there. It feels cool and odor free. Also a baking soda for feet and under arm odor, it really works. try it.

Yes, I beleive in home remedies. I used to mix: honey, lemon juice, peppermint candy, and a little whiskey together, You bring it to a boil, and after the peppermint desolves, then sip on it, and you feel like a new person the next day.

Have you heard the saying a "A hit dog will holla"
Yes I believe in home remedies, I use them a lot and some of them are pretty good. Most home remedies are made from natural things.
I have a site I go to for home remedies.
Some I use were taught to me by my grandmother.

I think that several of us learned home remedies from our grandmothers.
