Does anybody really need the copy-pasting facility in Mylot?

Hi friends, I know that in Mylot you can use the copy-paste facility only when you've crossed 500 posts. But, what I don't understand is that why would anyone want this facility. People would have already gotten into the habit of typing stuff themselves till they reach the mammoth 500 posts, then why give this added facility after 500 posts. Also, as far as I know, according to Mylot guidelines you cannot repeat your posts more than once in a discussion. I wonder why would anyone then use the copy-paste function?

I am surprised you don't think copy-paste function is necessary. I, on the other hand was wondering when they were going to lower down the number of responses just so that I can copy and paste!! There has been more than a dozen times when I have typed in a really big answer to a discussion and by the slip of a finger I end up deleting the whole thing(which I had been working one for over 30 mins!!) Imagine the frustration of it all. 90% of the time, I wouldn't have the patience to repeat myself all over again and just give a two or three line answer!! If I had the copy-paste facility I would just write it down in a notepad or word document, check for spellings and grammar and just paste it in the reply section. Even if something happens to go wrong, I can always go back to my original word document and copy it in here.

I don't think we would be strong enough by 500 posts and have all the patience that is necessary. Not all of us atleast. If you take me, I have been on mylot for more than a year now and all I have is 375 responses. I don't respond to many discussions except those that I feel that I have something new to say. You see, I had the habit of reading previous answers before I responded because I didn't want to be saying the same thing again. Only later on I realised that this habit was cutting the number of responses I could reply to, and you can see I still haven't reached 500. In my opinion, if the copy-paste function is allowed, I would have reached a lot many posts by this time. I think restricting the function only makes people impatient so they don't do mylotting that much anymore... anyway that is how it is for me atleast .

I agree that copy-pasting is necessary for long posts and the risks encountered due to internet problems makes it a necessity. But the thing is by the time we've reached the 500th post all our patience would have been put to test and we would have become aware of the risks involved in typing here in Mylot. So, why then give this facility when we've made ourselves strong enough to brave all possible things which can go wrong here.

I think the copy and paste thing helps me a lot. Because a lot of threads you can search and they have dozens of people who have asked the same thing. I see no point in typing the same thing I typed in another post so I just copy what I wrote then paste it in to the other thread and thats an easy post or two. So I do think it diffintley helps.

Guideline from the don'ts list Post the same response to different discussions even if the discussions are related or similar. This type of activity will more than likely harm your reputation rating.

I agree, it's against the guidelines. Even if you are posting from different websites I don't think it's okay to do it. Isn't is unfair to all those mylotters who would want your own frank opinion rather than a post which has been lifted from a discussion written by someone for some other person.

Even I don't do it here. Thanks to my discussion I have come to know that people do such posts here too. I must admit that I've not come across any such posts here yet.

All myLotters may not use it but I am quite sure, this is needed for some people. This enables to quote other sites’ references, facts in some discussions and along with responder's comments. There have been many occasions; I have not shared as much information as I could have because of typing! I also like to write down things first in word file then post it. Without copy-pasting this would have impossible for me! Thanks for sharing this nice topic!

Yes, copy-pasting would not be used by everyone as I seldom see posts having quotes or stuff from other references. Most of the time I see discussionns related to problems and relationships here. Yes, copy-pasting is helpful if you want to save your work somewhere first and then paste it here. I wonder if you maintain all the posts which you've contributed to Mylot.

I cant wait to get it for two reasons. One, i have trouble with spelling and so if im writing some in depth comment then its nice to copy and paste it into word and spell check it. And two, its prety much imposible to write out a link to a artical on a news or info site and its against the terms to reproduce any news artical without giving the source

It comes in very handy for me. I sometimes am on another site and I turn the javascript off over there because of all the crap on the pages. Then I forget to turn it on when I get over here. I cannot post my comments with java off so I just copy what I have written, turn java back on, refresh the page and paste. Also, sometimes when answering a discussion I find it easier to copy and paste an answer that I get from another website, or a link to that site that has the answer

Hi! thanks for the info, I didn't know that Java scripts need to be enabled for Mylot to work properly. Hey, are you allowed to copy answers from other websites, is it allowed here? I though that all your posts must be original and you have to type it yourselves.

I use the copy and paste to copy names and links to website that are relevant to a response. I also use it to copy parts of articles. It really comes in handy if you write a long response and you don't want to loose it so writing it on microwrord then coping and pasting can save a lot of retyping.

Yeah, typing the whole post again would be very frustrating if you haven't saved it elsewhere and unfortunately you lose it due to internet problems.

I don't know about everybody else, but I know I do! Before I had the ability to copy and paste I lost a few discussions and responses due to mylot either being down for maintenance or a glitch that was either on my end or mylot's. Some of these discussions/responses were long and thought out and to lose them because I wasn't able to copy and paste on here was completely screwed up. But I continued on and didn't give up. Ever since I have been able to copy and paste on here I have been able to save the things I write, just in case... I also like to be able to copy and paste a link if it applies to a discussion, rather then have to type it out.

Yeah, typing out discussions elsewhere before posting it hear is a very good idea. I had lost quite a few of my discussion when recently there was a format change done here in Mylot. It was very frustrating as one the one hand you had to type everything again and on the other hand, the ideas which had come to your mind earlier eludes you the second time. The end result being the discussion quality is compromised when you re-type the second time.

Some people type their posts elsewhere so they can spell check and just proofread, some copy and past web addresses or quotes. :)

Hi artemis, you don't have to do anything. It is just in-built. You get a red line beneath the wrongly spelt words just like any word-processor. I use it on firefox browser, but I doubt it has to do anything with the browser.

Hi artemis, even Mylot has a good spell-check in it. You can even add words to its dictionary which is really very good. I don't think people would go elsewhere for spell-checks. Yeah, really long web addresses are a pain to type and copy-pasting would really help there.

Sometimes I find information for a poster that I copy from another site and paste over here. I always indicate where it came from incase they need to check out the site themselves so it does come in handy to be able to cut and paste.

But, is that allowed here in Mylot. I have heard that you can't use other sources in your discussions. Please correct me if I am wrong. Why do you think that 500 posts were considered for the cutoff, kinda do people get mature enough after the 500 posts.

well first of all it is needed to make a discussion about news here it would take too long to write all news to here and second is people write discussions on their computer when they are not able to connect to the internet so they wont have to log in and write it again i think its really useful enough

Right, people type the link to news articles its very helpful. They don't copy and paste news articles because that's plagerism and its illegal. Plus its against mylot rules.

Yeah, even I think that just copy-pasting news articles would be not right even if it were allowed in Mylot. Yes, the internet problems is a valid point but even more painful of writting in a notpad and pasting it here. But, again, why only after 500 posts?

I think that would be a great help if you have that copy paste in your arsenal. But I still have a long way in attaining that goal. So all I have to do is post and respond then post again and then respond again. Just thinking of it makes me want to rest for a while. LOL. But I am a PRO copy-paste mylotter.

yes! it is really necessary to have copy paste facility. While giving quota from others we have to write exact same what they said. Writing exact same makes difficulty in typing. So copy paste always rocks

Yeah, copy-pasting is very useful in such cases. Otherwise it will be like the game of Chinese whispers where the last person would have a version that the first person has not said at all. It will be kinda very embarrassing if you added your own stuff into the quote.

I really could use it because sometimes when I write a large post, the page doesn't respond.. and I lose all what I type.. so, generally what I do is to copy my post and paste into notepad or other text editor and parts by parts paste again.. I think mylot allow 20 characters to paste.. but it's annoying

Anchopy, once you have reached the post count that allows copy and paste you will be able to copy the whole post, not just twenty characters I hate when the page doesn't respond after I have typed a big response. Grr!

23 Aug 08
Hey, are we allowed to paste 20 characters? I though you can't paste even a single word. Even if that is allowed, though, it would be really tedious to paste a large post. Yeah, I had also lost most of my discussions especially when Mylot had got it's makeover about a month ago. But, everyone must be allowed to use it and not only after crossing 500 posts, what do you think?

I don't know if it is a bug or something like that, but I can paste up to 20 characters.. I'm trying to reach the 500 posts so that wouldn't be a problem anymore... But it's hard to reach it because I don't wanna just reply to the forum saying "ok" or "mmm, that's interesting".. I want to reply the best that a cant to help others.. so, I have been here for a week and I'm just in the 133 post with this.. I'll keep posting to reach the goal..

Well, Copy-paste option simplifies posting here at mylot. As the people mentioned that it becomes easy for someone to post an article which is worths haring with the mylot users. Moreover, I often face this problem that due to poor internet connection speed, the page would expire while in the process of submitting my post. As a result, my response would not be posted. So after crossing the 500 count, it becomes easy for me to copy the text that i have written before submitting it so that i can paste it back if in case, the page gets expired in the middle. Hey, i don't think that there are any guidelines like you cannot post more than once in a discussion. Because,as i told youthe problem above, it would also happen that the response gets posted twice when i paste it later unknowingly that itt has already been posted the first time, the page expired. Moreover it also makes pasting ur response in another similar discussion feasible where almost the entire text is similar to what you would write in that discussion.

Well, i haven't faced any such problem with reposting the same response to another similar discussion. However,to be on the same side,I try to make it a little different either by adding one more line or rephrasing some content.

hi vipul, yeah it is surely frustrating to see you hard-typed discussion just getting wiped away by a simple message saying 'The page cannot be displayed'. It is very annoying and so copy-pasting would be a very good alternative. I am not sure about the rule saying that posts cannot be reposted in other discussions but why take the chance and get banned or stuff like that. If it happens then I am sure we'll all miss Mylot a lot.

As a real writer, I often write my posts in my word processing software then copy and paste to here because I post articles here and elsewhere on the internet. I find the copy/paste feature quite helpful.

That is very true for longer articles, but posts here seem to be quite shorter here and posts can be completed here itself provided you don't have a very troublesome internet connection . It may help people who have a habit of doing it all the time but for me it's extra work of typing and then again copy-pasting it here.

LOL.. Copy Paste function is not to copy and paste the same post again and again dude.. It's for pasting information about anything interesting. Suppose you found a news article that is very interesting and you want to share it with your friends here on myLot. What would you do.. Type the whole URL with numbers and alternate caps and small letters and weird signs..???? That's impossible. So that's where the Copy Paste Function comes into handy. Other than that, there are many cases where you would want to quote something from a different place, which is ore than you can type. What would you do... Copy And Paste. Simple.. bourne

I may not NEED it but I sure do WANT it. I, like so many others, would like to be able to quote other sites, references, materials in some discussions and my comments. There have been a few times I have not shared as much information as I could because I was just too darn lazy to type it all out. :-) I admit it. I am lazy. I also like to "write" things down first - in Word or my email or where ever - think about it or process the information for a while - then post it. Without copy and pasting I tend not to do this. Again...I may not NEED it but I sure do WANT it! :-) Good discussion! Thanks for sharing!

Hey, that's a very good line you've mentioned. May not need it but sure do want it. But, at the same time I don't think I will be able to make much use of the tool as I've learnt to type everything here on Mylot. It's kinda a habit which is hard to break.

Hey...that is a pretty good habit to have. I wish I did. Every time I want to "cut and paste" and have to type it out...I get fairly frustrated and tend to share less. Oh well...that is my problem. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment. I appreciate it! Take care and have a GREAT week. :-)
