Mine start on Monday, August 25th. They started going back the week before Labor Day about 6 years ago. I personally think it is crazy because #1 our state fair starts the same day and there are kids in our county that participate in the fair.
Second, I think it is bad idea for the kids in kindergarden and pre-k, to have a day off from school (labor day) so early in their new school time routine.
They moved up the starting date so the kids could get out of school earlier in June but it never works that way because we always have snow days to make up. Last school year we had rain days to make up because the forecast and the actual weather couldn't agree on rain or snow. LOL
I substitute in the schools, so I should have a week to myself before I start getting calls to come into work. I am going to have to get into a new online routine - LOL.

My kids went back August 4th, which is a lot earlier then most people in my family. They don't get out any earlier then members of our family who live in other states either. We rarely get snow days (though they did let out early a couple times last year for storms which turned out to be nothing). Makes no sense really, they just like to have the kids sit in classrooms for longer and longer periods anymore it seems.

I know schools are experimenting with year round schooling. When we were looking to move to SC, the county that we want to move too does all year round schooling. Basically you still have a summer vacation it is just limited, and then you do have a nice Xmas break and a nice Spring break.
What state do you live in?
I'm in Maryland and this past year we had rain days to make up.
Welcome to myLot and thans for the response.

I agree with you. My kids were supposed to start on August 18, however due to Tropical Storm Fay, school was closed for the first two days so they started on Wednesday, August 20. When I was a child, it was always the Tuesday after Labor Day. You are right about having a holiday so close to the beginning of the school year. I wouldn't know about snow days though! We live in Miami.

I guess you wouldn't know about snow. I have been to Miami to catch cruise ships in the past.
When Isbelle came through here several years ago we were closed for three days because of all the wind damage.
Now will your kids have to make up those days?

My kids start back to school Monday. They were supposed to have started Wed. this week, but it was postponed. They are doing construction on the school and it was not ready.

Our school is one year into a three year modernazition (sp) so I can relate. They had so many days to get stuff completed this summer and they didn't. The general contractor was dreaming last September when he said they would have all this stuff done over the summer. I use to work in construction and there is always delays. But our school is shooting for Monday, we have no clue where the buses are going to be but they said it's all a go. Luckily we are walkers.

Hello kimber867! My children start school on September 2nd. Alot of the other school in our area start before us on the 25th of August likes yours.
I was just disgussing this the other day with my mother, when I was younger, I remember starting school more near the middle of September. And my mother also remembers starting school alot later than the children nowadays.
Then again, when I went to school, there had to be hail the size of footballs falling from the sky before they would call the school off!
Yes, it is funny how mow they will call off for every little thing it seems! I would've liked that more when I was a child.

I can always remember going back to school the day after Labor Day except for the year we lived in Georgia. We went back in August but we were out in the middle of May.
I have been told that the reason the school board's aren't taking chances with the weather because if a bus would be in accident, the school board would be sued.
Two years ago, we were actually getting the snow, and they didn't cancel school in time, so they got all the kids in and then announced that they were closing three hours early. Which was crazy because that was three hours more of snow falling but our county's procedure is that once the kids are in school they need to be fed lunch. Silly rule in my opinion.
I can remember the days walking to school in the snow wishing they would have called it.
Also, our kids off so many more days in a school year. It is crazy.
Thanks for the response.

My son is almost 20. I wish he was going back to college but he has decided to try to get a job at Home Depot. I hope he can because I think he will like that.
My sister's kids are going back on August 25 too. School started around here where I live on August 14 which in my opinion is way too early. I like it when school starts after labor day.

Maybe he will go back one day, you never know.
Do you live in the South? I know when I lived in GA, we started early to get out early due to the heat, this was back in the day when the schools didn't have AC.
Thanks for the response.
I thought I was going to have off all next week because who needs a substitute right away. Well the one school I worked at, called this morning and asked me to work next week. They wanted me Monday, but I already made plans for the day. I will be working as a Special Ed teacher until 9/2. I am shocked and now have to get myself prepared, like making sure I grocery shop, etc. Too funny.

My daughter is in 9th grade this year and starts on Sept. 2nd. My son is starting technical college on Tuesday the 26th. Summer seems to have gone by fast again and I am not quite ready for school to start. We did get daughter a new backpack today and she already had some notebooks & folders so we probably don't need too much more of that sort of thing. Glad that I still have one more week for her.
Good luck going to work right away. I am looking into a new job and was hoping that I would have a little time yet too. So hopefully I won't start until after school starts.

Well I jinxed myself - LOL. I was asked to start back to work the first day of school but I already made plans, so I said no that I could be there on Tuesday. I'm working Tuesday to Tuesday for a Special Ed teacher. Luckily I know most of her kids. I can't imagine they are going to do too much this first week of school.
There goes cleaning and gleening the girls rooms! LOL
At least I will get a paycheck sooner than later!
Thanks for the response.

For the first time since my daughter started school in our district, which was 6 years ago, we are starting on Sept. 2nd.
Usually we always started the week before Labor Day, but for some reason we are late starters this year.
Now most of the schools around us have either already started or they start next week, we are one of the districts starting the lastest.

Lucky you! I wonder why they changed it this year?
I'm getting the rest of my errands done this morning because I do not want to be near a Walmart, Target or a mall this weekend. It is going to be crazy.
Thanks for the resposne.

That's why I home school my kids, I'm not beholden to any public school schedule. We start September 1st and go until June 1st, then we do a page a day during summer. You've seen those "My kid is an honor student at..." bumper stickers? Since we home school I want to get a sticker that says, "We home school, I have no idea how smart my kids are!"
