Question regarding Vista

My family recently bought a laptop with free Vista software but experience has taught us that Vista is not the most stable, nor preferred OS in any computer we want to operate on.
Do you think we should change it to XP or just stay with Vista since the laptop's usually used for internet and documents anyway? The laptop works fine with those two jobs, but it can get irritating to have to click OK every time I want to run something. And it has a tendency to crash.

I have Vista also and have had no problems with it. As for the UAC (user account control) which pops up every time you want to do something, you can disable it which is what I did in the control panel. I also performed a few tweaks from this article that you might want to check out: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2238&page=1.

Pcstats is a great site and Ive used many of their tweaks in the past with great results.
Most of my crashes come from driver updates. MS admitted long ago that they had trouble getting companies to submit their drivers to em. Why? Because they had heard rumors that Vista was gonna stink.
I tweak for speed, I use my lappie for my business. I dont need the glitzy addons. I didnt want Vista when I ordered this laptop from Dell. I bought from Dell precisely because I wanted this laptop, a Inspiron 1720, lean and fast.
I do registry backups, I backup my data, Ive got the 2 gb of memory they recommend.
I do my product and MS updates. I do everything as it should be done.
Yet these crashes have cost me sales. And Dell and MS dont care.
As a customer if I dont get what I pay for, Im gonna go somewhere else.
Like a non MS operating system

Thanks for the link! That's pretty helpful. I think I'll try out some of the things they stated there, too.
And thanks for the heads-up about the UAC! I'll go and do what you did. :)

Sorry for this really late reply, but thanks a lot of the link! Someone has linked pcstats in an earlier comment and it really is quite a useful site to browse through so I'm really thankful to you and him for making me aware of this place. The UAC is really annoying, especially when I'm not used to it but now that I've decided to stay with Vista, these little tweaks will really help me along the way.
Thanks again! I'm still having trouble with Vista, but that's because I haven't installed the service pack that everyone has been telling me solves everything. I'll see what I can do when my laptop's in the form where I can utilize it to the maximum. :)

I used Vista in this pc too when it was first bought a month back. same as your experience, it also crashes AND is VERY insecure (wouldn't let many of the programs i normally use with XP to run which i find SO dang annoying).
so i HIGHLY suggest you change to the well-loved (*grins*) OS that has been proven time and again to be stable, dependable and very user-friendly. i don't know about you, but after years of using XP, i always managed to get lost around that Vista.
the look of Vista is something to admire, though. however, you can get the same look with XP if you knew your way around PC tweaks and stuff.so you can have both functionality and visual stimulation with XP :)

yes, vista is window's answer to the mac interface (but has done an awfully bad job out of it, i must say. peace to all vista users :p)
i wasn't able to go to the bank. :((
there was a major task at work that has a DEADLY deadline, so i decided to hold it off for the day. maybe tomorrow i'll go. maybe. hehehehe

I wasn't able to go to the bank either. Even today. The weather is horrible where I am, gah!
Anyway, thank you very much for the help, kaye! A lot of people have made excellent points on the pros and cons of each OS and now, I'll just have to relay it to my brother, who is more knowledgeable in technology than I am.
(off-topic: by the way, if people are still giving you a hard time regarding the $10-in-less-than-a-month/less-than-200posts thing, it seems that responding to comments in discussions you started doesn't seem to up the number of posts. I haven't asked anyone about it, but I've been busy replying to a lot of people who responded to my discussions and my post count isn't updating. So basically, you might be replying to a LOT of people with really LONG posts that get counted to your earnings but the post count isn't registering it. Hope you don't have any troubles anymore! :D)

YES! That's exactly how it is with mine too. I could handle it before, but it seems to be getting worse and, grrr! I thought at first that I would get used to it, but, again, it was getting worse and it was more work to just take it.
As an aside: wasn't Windows copying Apple/Mac with the Vista interface? Anyway, yeah, it does look pretty. But I actually like XP's interface already. I'm not hard to please, hehe.
Well, thanks for the input! I'm waiting to see if there's anything good about Vista, but yeah. I think I'll change it to XP soon. :)
(psst! how did you fare in getting EON, by the way? I was spoiled with BDO's 7pm mall closing and arrive too late. .

Hmmm, if your just going to use it on those stable purposes, I guess you can keep that OS for the time being but, if you still want to use it with other applications, you might as well consider changing it for the best..
I mean, if you really want to get your money's worth and use the laptop for more than just internet and storing documents and files, better have a stable OS.. well, until Vista finally assures us that its stable enough to handle consumer needs..

It was actually when I installed a game that the problems started going beyond annoying and became troublesome. I do want to install some other software because I bring this laptop everywhere and it's easier to just use it rather than waiting to get home to use the desktop for other stuff, but it's either I'm not utilizing Vista right or it's just not something for me.
There's been a lot of opinions on this thread and it's really help me decide on what to do. Thank you very much for your input! It was very appreciated. :)

hehe, for me, when Vista became a hot poit, i installed it to my disck F, to run a double OS, and to felt Vista, then i found Vista's theme is really great, so i GOT LOVE it when i first used it, but, as time goes by, I was bored to commit every application, so i deleted Vista, to use my XP OS only.
To perchase tue beauty, i managed to add Vista's theme to my XP, and now, i enjoy my XP!

LOL! Yeah, Vista is really pretty, isn't it?
The laptop came with a built-in Vista, though, so that was why I was asking whether XP or Vista was better (the desktop has XP and I got used to it). I'm now just trying to figure out how to upgrade to the service pack. People have given good points about the PROs of Vista and the service pack was said to fix all the glitches in the original Vista, so I'm hinging my hopes on that.
Thanks for this reply by the way. I apologize for the lateness of this response. ^_^x

LOL! Yeah, I've been told that by other comments in this thread.
That is a pretty big PRO on the side of XP, though, because while I might be having problems with Vista's frequent crashes, I would rather suffer that than not be able to use the software I need to use.
This reply's a month late, but thank you for your comment. I'm still having a few problems (due mostly do not upgrading to the service pack, yet) but I've done a few of the things that others have said and it seems to be working fine.
(...now if only I can figure out how to upgrade to the service pack)

Peronally I would down grade to XP, however you may have issues with drivers etc.
Perhaps it is best to search the internet for Vista tweeks in order to lower the level of windows security?

Issues with drivers can appears when you downgrade to XP? I never knew that (then again, I'm not really tech-savvy enough to know most computer-related things). Thanks for the heads-up! I'll try to make sure to check everything if ever I do decided to change to XP.
I'm actually leaning on that option but I think I'll wait for a few more opinions on the matter. Gotta see whether something good about Vista crops up. And I'm kinda afraid to mess things up, considering my incompetence in the area.
Thanks for responding!

you should be able to find out what drivers you need. and download them and i would put them onto a cd if they aren't already

I can only speak for my own experience with Vista. Ive had over 80 BSOD crashes since I got my Dell Lappie back in Nov.
Dell will not stand behind their promotion of Vista installed on their machines in my case.
MS is just as bad as far as support. The crashes have diminished in the last 2 months since the last hotfixes release.
Vista does not play well with 3rd party products.
Firefox, Thunderbird, Verizon wireless, Comcast. Vista does not like em doing updates. The HD starts to spin, the BSOD comes a creepin.

Ack! Those are way worse than what I have experienced so far! I hope you managed to at least get some help from both companies (this laptop is Dell too).
From several knowledgeable people who've posted in this thread, it seems there are ways to configure Vista to suit a user's needs. I'm planning to stay with it for now, install SP1, configure it to stop asking me prompts every time I want to do something (if only because they really do annoy me) and see what happens from thereon. spoiledbrat also made a good point about Microsoft retiring from XP. I don't really want to be unable to use some software after downgrading.
I hope our computer problems get solved soon! And thank you for your reply.

My laptop has Vista and I have yet to experience any problems with it. I'll stick with the if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy.

LOL! Yeah, but from the frequent crashes of mine, it does seem to be in the category of broken. As I've told a lot of other people here, I'll stay with Vista for a while. I've been told that the service pack fix the glitches frequently found in Vista and makes the usage run more smoothly.
Thank you for your time! :)

Good day... For me just downgrade your OS to Xp and save yourself from lots of headache and waste of time finding appropriate software for that OS. I mean I think XP will always be better until of course win7 if ever.

I apologize for the late reply and thank you for commenting.
I have decided to leave it in vista, due to the great points given to me by vista users. I think the one that convinced me best was how Windows have stopped manufacturing XP-compatible software, which would be problematic for me if I downgrade to XP. I'm still having problems with Vista but that's more because I haven't installed the service pack like the Vista users have told me to do. I am still lost on how to download/install the service pack, but I'm hoping everything would be well once I do.
Thank you again for commenting! ^_^

Yeah, I was just told that Microsoft recently retired XP and will focus all future software to be Vista-compatible only (or Vista and any other future OS). Thanks for the comment! :D

Well, i think you just better downgrade to Windows XP since Vista is not yet stable for the moment. Although Vista SP1 is now available.. And since its for internet and computer use only, XP would do good. And about that something that pops out when you run a program, that can be fixed in the control panel. I also have a laptop that has pre-installed Windows Vista. I did dual boot that is I've installed Ubuntu (which is a free OS and can be downloaded from the internet) on it too so whenever i start the computer, i'll have to choose between Vista and Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses only 256 memory unlike Vista which is 512 memory. If the memory of the laptop is not too big then you can try Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu whenever i access the internet because virus and spywares cannot operate on Linux operating system and it has Open Office that works like the Microsoft Office. But you may not be familiar with Open Office for the documents since you cannot install Microsoft Words and the likes in Ubuntu. I only use Vista when i want to use programs that are not compatible with Ubuntu Linux.

Sorry! This reply is a month late. I thank you for comment, by the way. :)
I decided to stay with Vista, due to the many posts that told me the PROs of staying with it. I still need to upgrade to the service pack Vista has available, but I'm having trouble understanding what I need to do to do so. Microsoft is telling me things that confuses me a bit, so I might need a bit of help from people more knowledgeable than me.
Thanks again! ^_^

I would downgrade to XP for the time being, maybe wait a few months for all the glitches to be fixed and then go to vista again. I personally like Vista but that's just me. Also my laptop is pretty new with 2 gigabytes RAM so it runs really fast.

Apparently, the Service Pack managed to fix the glitches that commonly make people annoyed at using Vista. I still don't know what the outcome will be like if I upgrade to SP1, but one solution is better than none.
Wow, I envy your laptop! Eee! This laptop of ours is, uh, I don't really know how to describe it, not being a very tech-y person, but it seems to be on the norm/average side in terms of capabilities. :)
Thanks for your opinions!

The annoying thing your are talking about is called UCA and can be turned off ver easily from windows defender.
I personally use Vista, and for all activities, gaming, surfing, photoshop, music, typing, u name it, and i absolutely love it.
I dont see anything wrong in vista that wasnt in XP, once you get to know it well, you will realize vista rules.

Yes, a lot of people have told me that Vista's problems could be solved by installing the service pack, but it's been a month since I started this topic and I haven't gotten it yet (my fault entirely; I was relying on my brother to do it once he went home, but he upped and left again without doing anything to help me fix the laptop. _)
I've been told about that UCA (UAC?) thing and while I'm not really sure how to fix it (have looked at windows defender but couldn't find the off button for UAC, or I might just be doing it wrong), but I hope everything will be okay once I manage to update the vista os with its service pack.
Thank you for the reply and I apologize for its lateness! ^_^

if it's my computer, i would change to vista. its more useful, easy to understand commands and cmon, a lot of people prefer xp than vista! i love xp because its easy and fast in the same time.
but it's your computer, and you do what you want with it, so, if we all here change your mind, i think its a great start (:

Sorry, I kinda got confused. Do you mean to remain in Vista or change it to XP?
Well, thank you for your opinions! For now, I'll try to stick with Vista, hehe. I've actually said this to a lot of people now (and I'm wondering if it falls on spam?) but I'm not sure how to let everyone who's seen this thread know my stance on the matter. Anyway, thank you very much for your reply! :)

I'll downgrade to XP and have. When I first got my MacBook Pro, I installed Vista in the bootcamp for school work. Then compability issues made me install XP along with Vista and Mac OS X. Then it got so unstable and many programs returned the not responding dialogue that I totally gave up Vista and just fell back to XP. XP is still much better than Vista, without all the compability issues and all those security dialogue.
As for drivers issues, I think XP Service Pack 2 and above should have the necessary drivers, so it shouldn't be that big an issue.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't tried downgrading from Vista to XP yet (my desktop is XP and Ubuntu dual-boot) so I wasn't really aware of what might happen if I do so (which is why I started this topic XD).
For the time being though, I've decided to stay with Vista, because the Vista-users who replied have given a lot of helpful tips on how to make Vista work for me. I think I'm gonna try what they said and see if it works in my favor.
Thank you very much for your help! :)
