In terms of cost Linux is far way above Windows, For desktop or home use, Linux is very cheap or free, Windows is expensive. For server use, Linux is very cheap compared to Windows. Microsoft allows a single copy of Windows to be used on only one computer. Starting with Windows XP, they use software to enforce this rule (Windows Product Activation at first, later Genuine Windows). In contrast, once you have purchased Linux, you can run it on any number of computers for no additional charge.
Linux is customizable in a way that Windows is not. For one, the user interface, while similar in concept, varies in detail from distribution to distribution. For example, the task bar may default to being on the top or the bottom. Also, there are many special purpose versions of Linux above and beyond the full blown distributions described above. For example, NASLite is a version of Linux that runs off a single floppy disk (since revised to also boot from a CD) and converts an old computer into a file server. This ultra small edition of Linux is capable of networking, file sharing and being a web server.
One thing that Linux can do that Windows can not, is run from a CD. To run Windows, it has to first be installed to your hard disk. Normally Linux also runs from a hard disk, but there are quite a few versions of Linux that run completely from a CD without having to be installed to a hard disk. The term for this is a "Live" CD.

For most users, Windows is better. I tried Linus and even though it is virus free on the most part, its way harder to get it to do what you want. There is too much code to use. Mac is by far the best of all if you use many mutimedia programs and the web.

Now that depends. Linux is harder as if you really want to use the program for all it is worth you need to know the text base language to use it to the fullest. and with windows it is all easy to use it to the fullest. so it the respects that I mentioned Linux is better. Now on the other hand for ease of use Windows is better.
I have tried Linux and there is an awful lot to learn in Linux

I use Windows XP for everything be it gaming, internet or anything else as it is so user friendly. I mean things are really simple to understand even for a lay man.
I hate using Linux as is kinda complicated and also the interface of Linux sucks as compared to windows. But as you rightly said security wise Linux is very much secure. Its difficult for hackers.
Also for viruses Linux is much more secure. But i don't mind because i have a nice anti virus runing on my Windows that stops me for getting viruses Hehehe...

I think Windows XP is mostly installed on desktop workstation, because it has a user interface, as for linux it is mostly used by hackers and linux professionals, who has programming experience. A normal user can also install linux on a stand alone pc, but he must be able to understand the programming language used. So I would say they are both popular, but they don't fall in the same category of Operating systems.

My computer has two operating systems, One is Windows Vista and the other is Ubuntu Linux. As for me, i like Ubuntu more than Vista. I hardly use vista, i use Ubuntu in internet surfing and making other stuffs like documents.. I only use vista if there is a software i like that is not compatible in Linux. I feel secure when I'm using Linux since viruses cannot really operate on Linux systems.

I use linux (slackware) just because it suit my need. I don't think I'm a hacker just because I use linux. Linux UI is becoming more and more user friendly.
Anyway the best OS I ever try is MacOS. Not that I didn't like your choice, I just being honest to you.

I use windows xp at my work for programming and internet.. i can use linux to do that too but I like more Windows because in that OS I can use my favorite file manager.. I don't think that linux is for hackers.. Everybody can use linux, and now days is even easier for people to star using linux..
