How do you treat your books?

When you read, whether it be a borrowed book, used book or a new book;
do you use a bookmark to mark your place? Fold the page at the corner
of the page that you are reading? (gasp!) Or leave the book open like a tent
(yikes!)to keep your place?
I always use a bookmark. I think, and this is just ME; if a book is borrowed
that you should take extra care not to bend, fold or crease pages of a book
so that the lender gets it back the same way it was loaned.
So, how do YOU mark your spot in a book that you are reading? hm?

Regardless of whose book it is, I would never even consider folding down the corner of the page. I use bookmarks, although they aren't always technically bookmarks. I use receipts, coupons, envelopes or whatever else I lay my lands on when I need to stop reading. I really hate lending out my books to some people because you know that they don't take good care of them. I have one friend thought that doesn't even have to use a bookmark because she reads so fast that she always finishes a book in one sitting.

I hate lending out books also because
I have so many missing from non returns.
We have moved, they have moved and I never see
the book again. So now it is something that I rarely
do unless it is my Mom or Brother.

I am the same. I try to take care of all of
my books. I have many bookcases filled. Once a week
I run the vacuum brush attachment over the tops to remove
the dust that is settled there.
Thanks for responding :)

Books are an extremely important part of my life, and I love them. I never go anywhere without at least one, and I read at every possible moment. I have literally thousands of books and, even though I have a large house, I'm really getting cluttered. I don't think used books fetch much money, so I'm not sure what to do with them.
I would never dog-ear a page. If, for some reason, I can't find my bookmark, a paper clip will do very temporarily. I'm crazy about the bookmarks I've been using for the past several years. They're called Book Bungees, and they are great! They hold the place, and they protect the book at the same time. When people see them, they ask where I got them, and I often give them the one I'm using and revert to a paper clip until I get home to get another Bungee.

I always travel with a book, also.
I would be interested in seeing a Bungee for the
books.
Would you happen to have an image that you can post
so that we might see what they look like?
Thanks for responding.

Thank you so much for the information. No, I shouldn't have a problem finding
the site. Now that you have explained what a Bungee looks like, I think that
I have seen those before. It has been a long time though. They would be
so much better for traveling than a bookmark as they wouldn't fall out of the
book.
Thank YOU!

I have to admit, I'm a dinosaur, and I don't know how to do that. It's very much like an elastic hair band, with a plastic stick attached, The stick part (looks more like a doctor's tongue depressor) goes between the pages, and the elastic part wraps around the book. They're great! I get them through the Levenger's catalog. I think the full name is Levenger's tools for readers, and they're located in Boca Raton, Florida. I spend much too much with them, but their stuff is wonderful and the quality is excellent. They dohave a website, too. Let me know if you have any trouble finding Levenger's and I'll get out my last bill and look up the correct address or URL.

Sidney Sheldon is a good author :)
Yep, folding pages is a huge NO-NO for
me, also. It just ruins the book.

I am the same. I love my books and wish to keep all of my
books in the best of shape, even if I didn't like the story.
I still wish to preserve the book as much as possible because they
are fragile.

Oh, I can't STAND dog-eared pages! Makes me crazy.
I don't use a bookmark, though - I have a REALLY good memory, so I just remember where I was and start up again.
The only time I "tent" a book is if I only expect to be setting it down for short period of time. Tenting doesn't bother me as much as dog-ears anyway.

Wow! Do you realize that you are the ONLY
person that I have ever heard say that they
"remember" what page they were on?
I am impressed! I hate dog-eared pages, also.
It just ruins the pages :(

Hello my friend,
I am an avid reader and I treat all my books good.
And by my books, it pretty much means any book in my possession, be it borrowed or bought. I always use a bookmark - a postcard or another alternative and will never force dog ears on a page (not anymore... ever since I knew better... the last time I did that was when I was a little boy who didn't know better). In fact, when I see dog ears, I would try to right the creases if possible.
I try to at least maintain the condition of the books where possible.

As do I. Books are one of the few possessions I own that mean most to me.
It is always good to see you, LWWizard :) Thanks!

LOL I admit it, I leave my books open like a tent.
I read alot so I usually stock up on books from yard sales and second hand stores so the books are usually pretty beat up when I get them anyway.
If I do buy new books that I care about and plan to keep when I'm done reading them I take better care of them.

Well, at least you admit it!!! lol
We have an annual Woman's Axillary Book Sale, and I have to say some
of the books look a little beaten up there, also. Sometimes they only
cost a quarter, but yes, I can see what you are saying about the old books.
Thank you for sharing, madasp :)

I was taught by a librarian not to ever fold or crease the pages for a bookmark. This damages the book. It makes the lifespan of the book shorter and as any reader knows some books are worth going back to because they were such an enjoyable read. I use a piece of paper as a bookmark. Sometimes I just remember the page number if I don't have any loose paper running around.

I agree 100 percent! It most certainly does shorten the lifespan of
a book to crease the page. I have read many books over and over.
I remember one book in particular that was given to me, it was a wonderful
book, when I got to the last page..it was missing!
That was terrible, so, ended up going to the library, finding the book and reading
the last page!

You know what else I don't like: It's when people break the spine in a book; espcially paperback books. You're merrily reading along when all the pages fall out of the book. You try getting them all together in the right order and whalla! a few pages are missing. I've been known to go so far as buy another book just so I can get those missing pages.

I just remembered, another thing I don't like is when people mark up the pages of a book. They let their children take markers to them or people think they are a better writer than the author and they edit the book. Those things just drive me nuts!

Acturally, some books in these days often have a cover which extends a litte loger then the width of the book. The extended part of the cover is fold at the first page before you buy the book. When you want to take a break after reading several pages, you can fold the extended part at the page where you stoped. However, as to the books without extended covers, I also use the a bookmark for I am used to keep the book clean and neat. Sometimes I do not like to lend my books to others, as not many persons have the same habit with me.

I hadn't seen the extended cover as of yet, but it is a novel idea.
Hopefully more publishers will adopt this method.
Thanks so much for your input and welcome to MyLot!

I do collect books in any kind. I have book with box so it is always neat and clean. I put it on my big box so that no body sees it because for me my book is a treasure. But sometimes cannot be avoided when someone knows that i have book they like . i dont want to be selflsh so i let them borrow but sad to say 'cause usually they do not take care and worst they dont return. Im a bet disappointed.

I also have a nice collection and I do hate to lend books.
One of my oldest friends asked me if she could start borrowing a few
of my books and I just was honest and told her that I would rather
not lend out my books because too many have not been returned. :(

I use a bookmark also. When my bookmark falls out of the book, I normally
have to spend awhile searching for my place. I normally read in bed at night and would never be able to remember where I left off since
I normally fall asleep reading!

If a bookmark is available, I would use it. But usually I remember where I left of and pick up from there when I get to the book again. For borrowed books, I will take extra care not to fold the pages or damage the cover. I think the libraries has a way of tracking the damages caused by the borrower and ask for fines if necessary.

If the library doesn't have a way to check, then I think maybe they should.
I know when a book was returned when I was a child; I remember at times the
librarian flipping through the returned book to check it.

Yup, I treat my books very well - I would use something to mark the page; not necessarily a bookmark. It could be a piece of paper, post-it note or tag, business card, tissue, anything on hand. But I would never, never fold the page (that's almost like defacing the book to me!)

Right, and by creasing or "tenting" (which destroys the spine) you ruin the
book for future generations. I have put a lot of money into buying the books
that I want and I wouldn't deface or abuse any of my other possessions, so why a book?
I have witnessed some really abusive book readers in my day! and it makes
me want to grrr...lol

i use a bookmark to, and my bookmarks are mostly from the clothing tag cause they are beautiful patterned. but in most cases i borrow books, and i do make marks on it in pencil and erase them before i return. and i do erase the old pencil marks on the borrowed books made by other careless people.
