A cat I used to know

Back in my pot smoking days I had a friend
that had a cat that was born disabled. This cat couldn't walk
without falling over alot of the time. In our hippie high states
one evening we figured out a way to protect the cat. We cut a strip of
foam rubber and rolled it around the cat and duct taped it. Then we
made a small crash helmet for it too. This was a saving grace for this cat
because it would jump up on counter and fall off because her balence was off!
Believe it or not the cat lived to a ripe old age of 16 years old when the
original owner was going to have the cat put down!
Share a pet story with me please.

Hi Raydene, Are you sure the cat wasn't stoned too which is why it kept falling off LOL. One of my cats was called Bob cat as he had a bobtail due to it being amputated after being run over and he had to have his leg pinned and he used to fall off the fence every now again but he lived to a ripe of age of 14 before other repucussions from the accident affected his health and we had to have him put to sleep. I thought, when I first started reading Raydene's post, that she was going to say they blew some of the pot smoke at the cat, and it got better.

I just responded to your sad post, no I found this one. I would be glad to tell you a pet story, This one is about my darlin Hobo, he was a little dog. Then I had Rusty she was a big dog, German Shepard. Rusty was a year older then Hobo, they became best friends. They loved playing out in the snow. Hobo would hang onto Rusty's tail, Rusty would run thru the snow. Hobo would get airborn hanging on, it was so funny to watch. Rusty the female was the big dog, Hobo the male was the little dog. Well guess what they eventually learned how to do "it". Thats another funny story, if you can imagine. Yep, they ended up having lots of puppies together. She had 10 pups, 2 survived. Out of the pups we kept one of them. I still have her, her name is Polly (yep thats how I got my mylot name). Rusty and Hobo are both gone now, Polly is still here, sleeping under my desk by my feet. She is getting up there in years, about 13 yrs. old. She is still doing good, still has plenty of spunk in her step.

Hobo was a terrier of some sort, he was about the size of a cat. The big dog would lay down and move her tail out of the way. He would climb on, he was some stud, they would even get stuck. When they were done she would pull him around unside down, she was so big compared to him, his paws would barely touch the ground as she walked around. They would look at me like innocent teenagers, caught and then acting like they didn't do anything, it was so funny.

Tsk, tsk, tsk...a pot smoker huh? Hehe..well being from the Woodstock generation I was a wacked out pot smoking hippie myself...LOL
From what you describe of that cat it sounds like it had cerebellar hypoplasia--it's when a cat doesn't have great motor skills due to a condition in the brain
I even wrote an article about it and is at Associated content....I had fallen in love with this cat named Charley in a video I had seen at YouTube..you can see it here.

Most people do elect to put cats down with this condition as they don't understand it but many cats with this condition can live long lives and without pain.
Well there's only one story that comes to mind here. Many years ago I had a kitten named Bobbie, an orange tabby. We used to have groceries delivered by this nice teenager and he got a kick out of the fact that in a sense I had named the cat Bobbie as his name was Robert. Robert used to love to say hello to Bobbie and pet him. One day he comes to deliver, goes to Bobbie and says "Hey, look at his eyes."
So I go over and Bobbie had those third eyelids...a film that usually indicates a very high fever...hadn't noticed anything wrong just the day before....so whatever was wrong with Bobbie he must have gotten sick real fast. Next day my mother takes him to the vet...and the vet wasn't very hopeful. Bobbie had developed some kind of severe respiratory illness and very high fever...the vet wanted to put him down as he really didn't think there was any hope. My mother wouldn't hear of it..so the vet did as much as he could..pumped him up with fluids as he was dehydrated and antibiotics, he also gave more antibiotics to be given at home. So I became round the clock nurse....I had to force feed him on a regular basis (as by now he wasn't eating), gave him the meds...and even gave him routine steambaths....within a week Bobbie was better...my mother took him back to the vet for a follow-up and even he was amazed Bobbie pulled through....and Bobbie lived another 15 years!

Good thing Robert took an interest in Bobbie and noticed his quick decline.
When I delivered papers, I always paid attention to the kitties. At one house, there was an orange tom who sometimes was very friendly, and other times not so much. It puzzled me until one day, I saw there were two of them! Tom was twins... Tom Red and Tom Blue (named for their collar colors).

A friend of mine had a cat named Beowulf (sp?) after the Shakespeare's character - that had a nasal problem and sounded like he was snorting all the time.

I had a siamese cat named Peppy years ago. He liked going outside. One day I heard him calling me at the door and when I opened it thinking he wanted to come in, I found that he brought me a collection of live grasshoppers outside the door. He was looking up at me very proudly waiting for me to acknowledge his gift.

My cat Harmony gifted me with a birdie a few weeks ago, then a mousie last week, and just tonight brought another mousie to the door. Luckily, this one was still alive, so when she put him down to sing out her, "Look Ma! Look what I brought you" song, he managed to sneak away.

how nice of you giving the cat a helmet and the foam thingy is a great idea
you saved this cat's life many times I'm sure or else it wouldn't have reached 16
I have a sad story about feeding a dying pet because the owner is too young and just left it to my care so she could go out and play
I can't write or even remember about it without being too emotional so unfortunately that's just as much as I can tell you

Oh that must have looked so surreal but how wonderful that the cat lived to the age of 16! We once had a kitten that never grew up - he had a bone problem etc, he couldn't jump but was so lovable he spent an equal amount of time with everyone in the house - even people who didn't like cats adored Paddy. We used to have to sit with out feet on the floor and our legs at an angle that he could climb up so he could come cuddle up to us - it was as though he had a built in timer as after a set amount of time he would move on to the next person! xxxx

We had a Siamese cat named Baby Face Nelson. Named for liking the name baby when he heard it a song on the radio and for being a gangster as a kitten, stealing all kinds of stuff and stashing it in our bed. He was mostly an indoor cat until we had hem fixed so he wouldn't go roaming. He learned a cleaver way to get let in late at night. We kept having a problem with the alarm on my husband's van going off. We would get up to investigate and find the cat waiting on the door step. One night I happen to be looking out the window and saw our cat leap from the roof and land on top on the van, scamper quickly back to the roof and leap again to the van setting off the alarm. Then with a satisfied look he slides down the windshield and proceeded to the back door to be let in. Being a Siamese he had more then his share of antics.

Hi I have seen two cats just like that one was quite sick and had to be put down but the other the owner kept and he would go off balance but was a pretty happy kitten. Both of these cats were orange tabbies and what they had was cerebral palsy. They can live a pretty good life if you are willing to try and help them and it sounds like the owner of the one you knew had that. I still think of the little one we had to put down and often wonder did I do enough for him. Now after reading your story I feel guilt all over again. I guess I will never know.
Sincerely
ceciliah

The cat is so lucky to have such a kind and thoughtful owner. My mum has a tortoise, who is more than 10 years old. It has a very very good appetite during the summer and hibernate during the winter. Although it moves slowly, he do enjoy the time when we release him from his home to have a RAMBLE in living room every day. The funning sth is he likes watching TV and like the smell of women

Great to know there are other cat lovers as me. To tell you my pet story once my neighbour had a very young dog. One day it came to me when I was uptairs and was playing around me, asking me to pick it up. I was standing near the corner and when I picked it up it jumped from the 2nd floor. By God's grace it fell on soft mud formed due to rain. It escaped with a few wounds. From then on I am scared to hold a dog.
