My children went back to school today.
Talking about the day at school my 10 year old asked why the school year starts in September and ends in July?
Anyone know the answer???
All we could come up with between the five of us was that if you have the six weeks holiday over christmas we would all go barny as we wouldn't be able to get out much and the children would maon about having to go to school during the hot weather we are meant to have in the summer!!!
Any other ideas, please??
Many thanks

Back in the good old days...before air conditioning & grocery stores...kids went to school from September to May partly because it was too hot in the summertime to be in school & there was NO air conditioning & mostly because the crops had to be worked during the summer months. Then they started moving may back due to snow days & holiday breaks to make sure they get 180 instruction days in per year. Now it seems they keep extending a little extra on each end for who knows what reason. But, heat & food were the original reasons.

Thank you for the BR Anne. I have a ton of useless information floating around in my brain. It's nice to find a good place to use it!!! When I learned this little tidbit, I thought that I'll NEVER need this again...what a waste of time!!! Little did I know... Glad I could be of use!!!

The dates vary from place to place a bit, but generally school vacations, summer breaks, originated to accommodate harvest times. Children were expected to be willing and useful farm hands on the family farm. That need is long past, but the routine remains. My husband also grew up in an area that closed schools for the first day of deer hunting season, so they could go get their deer.It is still the habit.I guess that area still puts a lot of emphasis on the deer hunting.

hi anne well I was raised on a farm and farm kids were needed in the summer months to help out on the farm so school was held from sept to June, then kids were home to help their parents. but now this no longer holds true so guess its just a hold over from the early days in the US.

lol, kids ask the most interesting questions! and your answer was what I exactly had in mind. it's too hot to be in school for the summer. i think that may be the main reason. in my country, summer season is april-may, and we start school in june and end in march.. so no school in summer as well.. but it just got me thinking, summer in australia is in december, when do they start and end the school year there? maybe start in january and end in october?

There is no specific reason behind the school year starting from September and ending in July. Here in Pakistan, some schools have their school year starting from April and ending in March. I also had the same school year. When I was promoted to new class in April after giving the annual examinations in March, we studied for only one month, then we were given three months summer vacation with summer vacation lengthy home work. Some schools here have their school year starting from January and ending in December. In my opinion, there is no specific reason for school year ending and staring in which months of the year.

I don't really know
I guess other month is neither hot nor cold.
Thus, the vocation start in July and end in September.
So, the new term starts in september

this is the perfect period to study, because this period starts at the end of summer season and ends at the beginning of the summer season.
