What's a non-spammy way of promoting something you've made?

Let's say you've written an ebook or drew a webcomic. What might be a good way to promote your creation without making yourself look like a spammer? People have suggested to post comments on blogs or to email others, but those are all spam when done to a certain extent. (i.e., if you email friends, they might not consider it to be spam, but when you email random fellows, they probably will)
So, any suggestions?

ok, let us say you did that, there is a good way which can't be a spam, Space's profiles.. you put it in, You email your contacts through this spaces hosts which is 100% legal.
Second way, make a blog at blogger or wordpress, and post a ways to promote your products... and put a link of your blog at a promotions's forums and so.

I still think that blogging is a great tool and the hottest way of promotions nowadays.
However, ofcourse you could use another method like a website of your own where people are actually drawn towards to.
There is one fact nowadays, with the abuse of the internet, more and more people hate to receive unsolicited emails.
