Windows Update - nearly crashed me! Now What!

I have WinXP. Today I took the plunge and did a WIndoes Update - I clicked the "recommended" options and just took what they said SP2 updates. The update/install went just fine. I then turned it off and came back and turned it on and it basically crashed, as it wouldn't allow me to get onto windows! It said to choose from Safe Mode or Manual something or another. I tried and tried, but it won't go to window. I couldn't get onto my PC in any way. Thank god I do date restores and in the fiddleing I found an option to get to the restore point option, and restored it to a previous restore date.
Question
Are my updates still valid? DId the restore erase them all? I figure it did, but then again, I don't know how all this works so..... are they valid?
If not, how do I get the updates to work properly? I am a novice so I don't do any custom or other options like that - always just the recommended options for my OS of XP.
Anyone hae any suggestions as to what I should do? I wasn't havaing any trouble with windows, just trying to stay in the loop. I have a few programs that seem to be running so slow or not responding as they should, and thought maybe the update was the problem. \
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well I had a different experience lately I was infected by a Malware and was literally not able to work. Fortunately I was able to connect to our internet so i was able to researched about it and I cam upon www.geekstogo.com and from there they were able to clean my registry and the malware itself. Maybe you could try the forum there maybe they could suggest from you what to do as I find them quite helpful and they are effective in doing their job. Do not worry it is given for free.

That is why I hate MS and all these updates. My pc which uses XP is currently down because I could not get it to come back up even by going to the restore button. It crashed when I tried to update to the Service Pack 3. You can find out what programs you have by looking at the directory or by going to the add or remove section. I have read several reports of people's computers crashing with pack 3 but not 2.

I have heard that alot, so maybe I'll just leave well enough alone! I just dont' know which way to go - all I hear is constantly "stay updated..." yet this is what happens when I do!

Could be some conflict. If it's a Service Pack Update, your system will become slower if your PC has not enough RAM or slow CPU speed. It happens whenever SP1 is updated to SP2; SP2 to SP3. Some hardware doesn't support SP3. So if you've updated from SP2 to SP3 & crashed, it's because of hardware as I read somewhere someone's AMD system couldn't be updated from SP2 to SP3. Same problem, it updated fine but crashed like yours

I've not updated anything since I bought it 3 years ago. I have auto updates set, but nothing more than that. Maybe I'll just leave it as is...

iF UR OS MAY ORGINAL BUT DONT UPDATE WINXP.. IT WILL HAVE OTHER AFTER EFFECTS. I UPDATES IT ONCE AND I KNOW THAT MY COMPUTER HAS SLOW DOWN. UPDATE IS USED FOR SOME HARD USERS PLAYING WITH MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARES ETC. WIN XP UPDATE COMES WITH NETFRAME2.0 OR LATER, WHICH WE LIGHT USER, DONT WANT IT. U CAN UPDATE UR SERVICE PACK BY GOING TO MICROSFT WEBPAGE AND DOWNLOAD SERVICE PACK 3 OF WINXP. IT WILL CONTAIN NEWER TWEAKS OF WINXP. IF U GOT ORIGINAL OS DONT TRY THAT TOO. IF U WANT TO DO THEN BACK UP THE XP AND INSTAL SERVICE PACK 3. AND ONE THING RESTORE POINT IS SOFTWARE WHICH WILL BACKUP UR DATA DAILY OR IN SOME SPECIFIED RESTORE POINTS. SO THAT IF UPDATE AND RESTORE TO PREVIOUS DAY THE UPDATES WIL PERISH.

That's interesting. How often do you go to the Microsoft website to perform updates? I check out the microsoft update site once a week on a Friday so that I'm always keeping my system up to date. Just incase you don't know, we now have Service pack 3. Have you not updated to this yet? I would advise doing so. There are problems with service pack 2 now which is why service pack 3 came out. There's far better security on service pack 3. When you say you turned off your computer, do you mean you just turned it off without shutting the computer down properly? When ever you get updates, you are generally asked to restart your computer in order to confirm the configuration settings. Did you restart? There are other utility tools that you can use on your computer to make it perform better and I don't know if you know about these or not. The fact that your programs are running slow, this could be a whole number of things. Do you have anti-virus software on your computer? How much memory do you have? 256MB? 512MB? 1GB? If you have several programs open at the same time and you don't have much memory then it's likely that all your system resources are being used i.e. too much memory is being taken by having so many programs open. Does your computer freeze? These are all valid questions. If you need any help let me know, I can go through some maintenance details with you. Good luck, Andrew

Wow - you are over my head to a point! I ahven't done any updates to anything since I bought it 3 years ago! For just this reason! Things go wrong and I dont' know how to fix them! I just used the Windows Update tab option. But Will go to the WIndows website and see what's there. I don't do much with the PC - just emails, blogs and things like that, no games or online programs. My memory and disk space are low in being full. Thanks for your help

Yes, that is where I finaly ended up and was able to restore to my restore point of last month. Thank goodness. I do restore point once a month, and have never been so thankful for doing so as I was when this happened!

Too late, my Windows Vista has already crashed. No kidding. I think that my computer wanted to do an update, and the next thing I knew, when I was trying to turn on my ususal computer tonight, it crashed. I hate DELL and I HATE VISTA! By the way, there are no more updates for XP, at least, that is what I was told.

Did your computer shut down directly without saying "Do not turn off. It will turn off automatically. Installing updates xx of xx." Something like that? Allow it to finished the updates or there are tendencies your OS might crashed depending on what updates it is installing. Also be aware of those things prompting automatically and ask you to install it. it contains Spyware, Malware and other forms of infection for your pc. To be sure of your updates, go to microsoft website and download the update to see for yourself it is the right one.
