My wife and I went food shopping the night before last and stupid me didn't have dinner or even a snack before we left like I usually do. Well..... I think the shares in this particular grocery chain have gone through the roof because I pretty much cleaned the place out! lol. I have been looking at all of the crap we bought and am now wondering what the heck I was thinking!
Why oh why do I never learn how dumb it is to go shopping on an empty stomach?(Seriously, I bought a family pack of in-store brand broken pretzel sticks, a tray of figs that are borderline rancid and 3 different cheeses and that's just the start of it!) Are you like me and pretty much go crazy with new food ideas when shopping on an empty stomach? Or are you far more in control than I am?

I've done this in the grocery store, the department store and the bakery. Oh and not forgetting the take away counter at a restaurant once. So when I'm hungry it just not neww food ideas, its food and more food and anything which looks even slighltly interesting and edible finds itself in the cart.
Guess the control factor here is as freaky here as well.

You know what, most middle aged men are like that with 'magnificent' waistline and their women love it that way.
But the counseling part is still there, I stand by it.

Major counseling? After a "shopping while hungry" incident??? lol. Yeah, maybe I should go for this and clean out some other cobwebs at the same time..... My tummy contour is bordering on magnificent actually! (Assuming that "magnificent" is a code word for "borderline fat"!) Thanks for asking and thanks for responding.

I try not to go overboard, because of cost. I usually leave my husband home sleeping, because when he goes with me, it becomes boardline ridulous. He pick things up, I say are you going to eat it, of course his answer at the time is yes, then after we get home, it is a different story. I still have yogurt in my frige, that he picked up and never ate. I do not like peach flavor yogurt So if I want to save money, I leave my husband at home.

lol. But us husband's keep it interesting! How would we all get to try out all the new things out there if it was not for our inquisitive enthusiasm? Grocery shopping is one of the few types of shopping that us men actually like I think. Thanks for responding.

LOL! I know what you mean. Never ever do grocery shopping when you are hungry. I used to waste tons of money this way. I would feel very hungry at the end of the day. And on the way back home from work, I would stop at a bakery and purchase whatever junk that took my fancy. :) A very bad habit actually. I should have purchased enough snacks to last me a week when I was NOT feeling hungry. Next time, James, eat well before you go shopping. You could pass over some cheese if you feel it is too much. I just love cheese. :)
Cheers and happy mylotting

Hmmmmmmm BAKERY! lol. Well I am happy to say that I have just returned from grocery shopping and I did eat before I went! Oh! I didn't buy cheese! Oh well. At least I was far more conservative this time..... Thanks for responding and next time you stop at that bekery, please think of me!

Right now my fiance and I are not the supplier of food to our mouths. However, when I did have money and would buy food (often on an empty stomach or cravings binge) the shelves would sure enough be stocked with foods I liked. Now, living where I did, the shelves did not stay stocked and when I got home (often after a long days work, and when I say long I mean LONG) the things I had bought to consume, had been consumed.

Well, I will openly admit that it is never good for me to go hungry to the grocery store because I end up putting all different types of things in my cart and then later I am like why did I by that? When I go full I just get what is on my list on what is going to be used during the week but on the other hand when I am hungry I end up getting things that I do not end up using until later and by then they go bad I have learned my lesson.

Hi James, my wife and me found out the same for us - we buy more than we really need and can eat if we are hungry when shopping for food. It's better to have a meal before, then you will likely save some money :-)

If I have extra money and go grocery shopping while hungry, I do tend to fill the cart with more stuff than what was on my list. I have noticed I tend to hover excitedly in aisles with ready-to-eat stuff.
But if I am on a very tight budget, even if I am hungry, I just zoom right through the aisles and I'll be at the 15-or-less Item Checkout in no time.

You are lucky to be able to be so disciplined when budget conscious then! The supermarkets here have a LOT of the ready to eat things like pastries, cakes and biscuits and I am drawn to them like a magnet when I shop when hungry. lol. Thanks for responding.

I think this zooming-through the-aisles is a defense mechanism for me. Then I won't be able to look at stuff that I want but can't buy and be sad.

I understand what you mean! I too have been in that situation in the past! I needed some groceries and I was hungry at the same time! What did I do? Well, as soon as I entered the supermarket I walked straight towards the chocolate shelves, I had an unbelievable craving for chocolate! Anyone would think I was pregnant or something! As well as buying all the essential stuff for the main meal, I bought a lot of extras including Mars bars, Twixs, Dairy milk chocolate, and chocolate biscuits!! I always say to myself though: (this is ok, I will just work of the calories tomorrow on my totalgym!). Hey James, who says we can't have fun with food though! It's good to pollute yourself with junk from time to time! It's not going to kill you! If you are into home exercise machines like myself then you can easily torture your body the next day!! Andrew

Are you sure you didn't wacth that movie you love so much and then head straight for the meat section??? lol. There is not an exercise machine anywhere NEAR my aprtment mate so I have to be that extra bit careful with what I eat! I love my ffod though and am not afraid to experiment either. I am also a sucker for merchandising and new things that they put out on display. I just need to remember to eat first and I will be fine! Thanks for responding and grab me some chocolate also next time you're there!

Well. I actually prefer to do my grocery shopping when I am hungry! I am always having trouble deciding what to cook and when I'm hungry I'll discover lots of new possibilities.
I just love going through the store buying tons of delicious food. And when I'm home I take a look at all the yummy stuff I bought and make a list when I want to eat what. - So this technique works pretty well for me.

No I'm pretty bad too however since I know that when I'm in a store and am really hungry, I tend to want to buy more. Sometimes I end up buying more than I expected but usually I can say no, I have things at home to eat, so I'm not going to buy this. It's hard to really break that habit but it can be done. You just need to keep in mind that you're hungry so you want to buy more. So, sticking to a list, especially if you have a specific list of things you need really helps the trip go smoother when hungry.

Ah if only I could be so disciplined. lol. The reality of the situation I think is to just make sure that I eat before I go! Lists, common sense and intelligence in general pretty much fly out the window if I am hungry and shopping. Thanks for responding.

I do know that you are not supposed to shop on an empty stomach, (I read these facts somewhere, sometime, but I don't remember when).. I am bad about going to the grocery store on the spur of the moment and I am just about always hungry when I go.. I do, however, go to the deli and get about 4 thinly sliced pieces of hot pepper cheese and sometimes a small container of milk, chocolate or white, whichever I am in the mood for at the time.. I snack on this while shopping, hoping all the while that I will not get arrested for doing this.. This usually helps me to control some of my purchases.. It really helps, but I am a regular at this particular grocery store and they do know me, so I honestly would not recommend this to anyone else, you may end up in the slammer.. I do still have items that I have purchased and I wonder what in the H*ll did I buy this for, we have never nor will ever eat this item.. That is one of the green items in my fridge, it stays there until it turns green and then I feel ok with throwing it away.. After all, it is ok to throw aways something that is so old it has turned green, don't you think..

We all know we are not supposed to do this but I guess it is yet another example of theory being ideal but in practice it is not always so easy! Snacking while shopping IS a good idea but as I have said in an earlier post it is dangerous ground for me to do this because I would be unable to explain myself if I got caught. English here is an issue! I too am guilty of the green mentality with fridge food! Some of the stuff I have in there is almost alive! lol. Thanks for responding.

No James, you're not alone! I do that alot myself! I don't
know what it is. There's just something about being in the
grocery store! I just get hungry! I want everything yummy
that I see and it usually isn't what's on my list! It's
the junk! It's the cakes, cookies, candies, pretzels, chips,
whatever I don't need and shouldn't have! Even if I don't
go in the store hungry something just happens and I get
the "have to have" syndrome! I already know that I'm a
junk food junkie which doesn't help! I really try not to
pick up stuff and sometimes I actually put it back before
checkout. They just make things look so appealing. I'm
so bad! I have little or no self control. I'm ashamed of
myself! I just don't know how to stop myself. Telling myself
that I'm on a diet sometimes works. The only thing for me
is taking my boyfriend who says "you don't need it" very
firmly and shames me into putting it down. The problem is
he hates to go shopping with me and he's always working so
that leaves me to shop alone! Then when he looks in the
cabinets (he even knows the hiding places) he just shakes
his head! Oh well! I'll try to do better next trip! Should
be sometime this week or next. Will keep you posted!

It is pretty clear then that I am certainly not alone here then! Maybe it is time to create a self help group along the lines of "HGSA" - Hungry Grocery Shoppers Anonymous! lol. I can see it now..... Hi, I am James and I AM a hungry grocery shopper..... Oh the shame, the SHAME! Thanks for responding and yes, keep those urges in check when you next hit the supermarket!

Same thing here. My problem is I buy all this stuff and I have to eat it all by myself no one is here but me. So to keep if from going to waste I just gorge myself with food, junk food. I have learned and I do better now I always eat before I go grocery shopping and I wait until late in the day when I am not hungry, I hate to go any way. I just have to stay away from the ice cream and cookies.

It is definitely a smart move to eat before we go food shopping but it just doesn't always work out this way. I actually do enjoy grocery shopping far more than any other type of shopping; I just have to learn to be mnore disciplined when I go without eating first! Ice cream and cookies ounds pretty good to me so I can see how this would be a challenge to stay away from! lol. Thanks for responding.

I've had something like that happen too. I went to the supermarket, saw a lot of food and tasted lots of samples by promoters. In the end, I bought a few hundred dollars' worth of food that lay in my refrigerator for more than 3 weeks. In the end I had to invite all my friends up for a dinner and I managed to clear all the food, which was a relief.
Nowadays, before I go to the supermarket, I draw up a list of necessities that I have to buy. I try to bring just enough money so I don't get tempted and buy some other food that my family can't finish up.
Just my 0.2 cents, hope it helped.

Being able to snack on promotion samples might help for sure but they don't seem to do this at the supermarket I go to? My wife and I generally like to put together a list as well but nine times out of ten we end up forgetting to take it! lol. Thanks for responding.
