Should We Educate Ourselves on Other Religions?

I have in the past, stayed educated on other religions and religious practices mainly because I was involved with helping others get out of the occult. Now, I find so many different religions, paganisms and occults. I have even came across a religion that believes to be Christian but doesn't believe in the Bible at all. Do you make an effect to somewhat educate yourself on different religions so that you could witness better? I have seen some on here who are Christian and you can tell that they have educated themselves with Islam....etc. so that they seem better prepared when approached. I would love to hear your opinion

The Bible is clear that a Christian should "study ourselve that we would be able to prove ourselves that we are workmen approved unto God, unashamed, able to divide and know the truth of God's Words. The Christians in Berea have studied the Word of God with much zeal in their hearts. Futher 1 Peter 3:15 says that we ought to be prepared to everyone who asks you the reason of Hope that is in you, which is Christ with gentleness. Christians should know and anchor their faith in God's Word, able to defend the Christ they have believed in, equipping ourselves in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom encompass the knowledge of other practices as well as able to teach others, reaching the lost to the Savior. Be therefore, grounded and settled in the faith ! Have a great day !

I agree. In 1 Thessalonians 5:21, the apostle Paul says to "test all things and hold fast to that which is good." In other words, Christians shouldn't be believing with "blind" faith. There's enough proof that we can believe without a doubt.

I totally agree! The world thinks that as children we are brainwashed into believing in the Word of God. My father is a preacher so I grew up in Christianity but you know when I became an adult I checked out my beliefs for myself. There's enough proof and personal experinces for me to believe.

Yes. I do think that it is positive to educate ourselves on other religions. We live in a world that contains many people that belong to many religions. We should know what they believe in, we can not shut our door to other opinions and believes. educating ourselves on other religions is interesting and it shows that we are open minded and honor all human beings. I belong to the Jewish religion, but i can tell you that i have educated myself on every religion that i heard of, and that i do phone up my friends and tell them a happy holiday according to the religion they believe in.

i think that maybe every religion has a piece of the puzzle that will finally tell us what we're actually supposed to believe. i think they're all somewhat incomplete and maybe one lacks something that another has. we're real quick to assume that what we know is correct, and hardly ever give other people a chance to explain their views and actually take them in, especially with religion. maybe what we shouldn't be arguing about are prophets and messiahs and stuff but maybe we should be looking for the qualities that all these religious texts say make a decent human being. in a world thats so full of hate and destruction, some of it because of different beliefs in religion, maybe we should just find some common ground and get along a little better.

Hello there, By no offense I think that we should not learn other religions cause it might let you confuse. There's a lot of religion out there and with so many belief, but if you believe in one religion you must stick to it. Maybe there is no such real religion but you rather must believe in god words.

I do believe that studying other religions is not for everyone because it could cause confusion.

it's good to have a little knowledge on other religions. Need not full depth knowledge but with some fundamentals, biases and misunderstandings can sometime be avoided... for the very least, one must know abit on the 3 major religions in the world, ie Christianity, Islam and Buddhism...

Yes because we should all know what is out there, but should we take them literally, or follow everything that these religions say word-for-word, probably not. I have study other religions and seen what other religions were about before I ultimately decided to leave Catholicism and become an Agnostic. I do not regret my choice. I had seen what other religions had to offer and the positive and negative sides of religion, but I ultimately decided against being a part of any religion.

I do try to educate myself on various religions. Not so much so that I can "witness" to other religions but more so I can understand people who worship differently from me. So I do not do or say things out of ignorance that is offensive.

ofcourse. because first, you widen your knowledge and ideas about other people and their belief, in further understanding why a certain person acts in a manner that you like or don't like coz "UNDERSTANDING" and "RESPECT" are the two keys in harmony and world peace :) and it would not hurt to have knowledge on things that have or make sense :) peace :)

I think it is so important to have some degree of an understanding and knowledge about other relgions and paths. I studied many different religions on many different educational levels and have many friends of different faiths. I am a practising witch and often have to answer many questions about my particular path as there is so little education about it.

I usually avoid topics that talk about religions - it's a rather heated subject. Anyway, I'm Christian, but I am interested about other religions. It's not so much as being better prepared, or whatsoever. It's to understand other beliefs. I particularly like the Buddhist teachings - about peace and tolerance - they don't profess to be a religion. It's their way of life.

yes, i think it is really necessary. A proper discussion among religions can help us understand better our faith in our religion since it can provide as a depth meaning about the nature of different religions. And also, it can makes us open-minded as far as other religions are concerned. Some religions are misunderstood so we need to educate ourselves with their practices and beliefs so that we can judge them fairly.

I havent stayed educated on a lot of other religions. I wish i would have. I think that it is a good thing to know whatever you possibly can about a lot of religions. Especially whatever religion you are involved wit yourself. I think that if you know more about a lot of religions then you can relate to more people and possibly help others if they need help or questions.

Yes, yes, yes! People should not necessarily look at learning about other religions for the sake of maybe changing their faith; but should do so for the sake of gaining tolerance and understanding. Most of the complexities surrounding inter-faith clashes are borne from ignorance and/or a LACK of tolerance and understanding. It is in all of our best interests to learn to respect and understand those that think differently to us and why. Too much time is spent trying to convince one person over another who is right, what is right and why; and this is honestly counter productive. We are all human beings and we all have free will. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong? What is important is that we find a path that suits our own purposes in life and in parallel come to tolerate and appreciate the differences of others. This is not possible without base knowledge and understanding.

I try to learn as much as possible about other religions. ( Know your enemies, lol ). I am a Christain, and by that I mean that I do not belong to any denomination. I study from the New King James Version. I do also have a copy of the Koran as well as the Bibles that the Mormons and the Jehova's Witnesses. I have only recently been introduced to the Catholic Bible, I never knew theirs was different ! I want to know what other religions believe in and have found that most end up in the same place, that being God. Even though in different religions he is called different names, but still the same God. I think in order to understand people, their ways and actions, you must also know something about what they belive in ,so you can really understand them better.

i think you need to be really aware about the other religions. It is really important to know people around you. it helps you sometimes to behave in public with other religions. Some times since you are unaware you tend to offend their religion which can be very touchy at times. Thus you need to update yourself about others also.
