He just entered the first grade...He read over 100 books and received a certificate from the library....and he chose a book for a prize and they had stickers and other stuff too!
He is such a good reader...We checked out books from the library..sometimes 30 at a time...He loves to read and I am so very proud of him..
His 4 year old brother listened to the books his brother read and I wrote them on a list for him to hand in to the library and he also received a certificate and a book also...
They have books for sale for 10 cents at the library and they go through them every time we go...we have tons of books here at the house...
I'm so glad he loves to read....
How about your children/grandchildren...Did they read over the summer?

When I was that age I was an avid reader too, luckily! It has done me so much benefit now, I am a really speedy reader and it makes it really easy to learn new words. He's going to be one smart cookie! Keep him buried in books, make sure he gets plenty! I could barely go to bed at the age, I just craved to read and read more!

Wow. Congrats. I remember in 7th grade i received a few $25 gift cards for being a top reader in school. I read like 66 during the school year, which is pretty good considering all the hw and clubs and sports i participated in. Thats cool and I hope he continues to read as he gets older.

Hi lanlan...
That is cool that you received gift cards...66 books is a lot especially with all the other things that kids have to do in school...Good for you..
Some of the books he read were 50 to 70 pages....

Thats great. 50-70pages each that is impressive. I have teenage friends who wont even read a 50page book let alone 100. I hopes he continues to read. The more he reads the better he can do on a test.

That is excellent :) you have a very bright 6 year old grandson my friend. 100 books is a lot of books to read over the summer holidays. I think at most my 6 yr old son read about 30-40 books and is reading level 2 mostly and a few level 3 books. Because we read mostly every night, he has a love for books and reading (especially if they are about animals and dinosaurs).
He also took part in the summer reading program and completed his list of 15 books and got a booklet of coupons to various places around Virginia. We have used a few but still have a few more to get through.
I am glad he loves reading. I never really liked books when I was younger and never had anyone read to me, but as I got older, and worked in a Library and also trained and studied as a Librarian, I have enjoyed reading books ever since. I hope this continues throughout his life as a student and beyong.

I do not have any children of my own, but I just wanted to say that I admire your love and support of your grandchildren! It is so wonderful that they love to read, and it is obvious that you really encourage that. Reading builds imagination also, which is something a lot of kids are lacking these days. I applaud you and your work with those two young boys! I hope they continue to be avid readers throughout their lives!

hi feona congratulations to your sons. I love that our local
library has the summer reading program for little ones.I used to
work at our local branch Tustin Library. sometimes the kids
librarian would have me come into help her give out stickers, and coloringsheets, and other goodies. I loved to see the little
]ones come in to play the summer reading games and it kept me really busy shelving all the books that had been checked back
in. I miss my job so much now I am retired. lol.

That is wonderful! I think that reading is the key to academic success and it seems that he is well on his way. My son likes to read too and he always did. It has always been a part of our day. He reads for a total of 1 hour a day outside of his regular school day and homework. He is in the 4th grade now and he reads and tests on a 8th grade level.
Hopefully he will continue to love reading.

That's really great, at least he is into reading unlike other kids who spend too much time on tv and video games. As a child I read a lot too and I enjoyed reading lots of books. It has really helped me a lot especially during my schooling years because having a good reading habit would also help you get a good study habit.

Wow! That is so impressive! When I was that age, my grandmother was a librarian at the public library and the church library. I was always at a library, and was thrilled when she'd bring me books that the library was going to discontinue! Keep encouraging him to read!

That's a very nice grandson you've got. Consider yourself as lucky. And don't forget him to leave him occupied with lots of books to read. Myself in that age read a lot too, which has only payed me back in good things (fast reading, a big vocabulary, a good understanding for the things I read).

He is a very good kid and so is his younger brother...We have tons of books and we go to the library almost daily...
It is true that when he reads he gets better and faster each time....He is a very confident reader too!
I read also and with them seeing that helps out too!

that is alot of books. Becca does ok, she's not really a reader like that. To tell the truth becca would much rather be with her friends then anything. She's in for a rude awakening this year. We did go to the library as well this year. The got to go to splash station and other prizes as well from the library.

Congrats ro your grandson, good job!!
My 6 y/o son was also in the summer reading program..I don't know how many books he read, but every time he read an hour, he would get a gold coin to collect and buy things like stickers and things, he even bought his sister and himself a mini flashlight..I only allowed him to take out 12 books at a time, any more and we would need a wheelbarrow for my daughter and I also were in their reading program..My daughter would read 20 hours and she would have her name put into a drawing and for adults which my daughter does this too, every time we take out a book we put our name in for a basket they have made up..They have had a basket for car washing, (sponge,wax,etc..) and they had one for an office supply that had notepad and staples for the office..Now they have one that has cooking, it has spices and a rolling pin and wooden spoons and best of all, the special cookbook they have that the whole county librarians had supplied recipes for..This is good until Sept 30, so I have a few more chances..
So congrats to your grandson again, that is the way to teach our children/grandchildren to be great readers..

Isn't fun when the kids read? They want to do it and that is the greatest...It is good that your son also likes to read...congratulations to him for all his hard work...and being such a good brother...
I love to read and do read a book a day..400 pages most of the time...
Your library offers alot of neat things...I understand about the wheelbarrow..Luckily they had bags and Grandpa was there to help us also..*smiles*...
They always have activities going on at ours...
How sweet that he got something for his sister...My boys do that also!
Good luck on the cookbook...
Thank you again...

There are children who have the tendency to read and they goes on to read. It is the inculcation of a child in which way he develop the tastes. Here I can site a child of 7 years who made his website himself and his name is in the Ginnie Book of world record. He is a winner of many awards in such a young age.

Reading is an amazing thing. Children and adults can both aquire knowledge from books, which can be extremely valuable in everyday life.
You should encourage his love for books as much as you possibly can, and get him to read more and more advanced books. Stretch him to see what he can manage!
May I ask, what is the most advanced book that he has read?
I was rubbish at reading at that age!

Hi GemmaR..
He reads the scholastic reader books..and he has chosen some a couple levels up from his age group..There were some words he didn't know but once I helped him he was able to read it well..
Alot of the books were 62 pages long..He would finish several at one sitting..I never tell him that he can't read a certain book because it is advanced..we do it together...

That's great! I remember when I was in school, I loved to read books. Unfortunately, none of that has rubbed off on my boys. They don't enjoy reading at all. They only read when they need to. They don't know what they're missing.
