My hubby is also allergic of dogs. I love to have my own dog but then i realized it is not fair for me to have a dog when i know he will suffer. So we decided instead to buy a parrot instead of having a dog. Regarding hypo allergenic dog. I dont think there is one. One thing you can do is not letting the dog inside the house whenever your hubby is around. You can build a dog house and train your dog of staying outside your house. In that way you can have a pet and have a clean house at the same time (".)

Please don't get a dog is going to spend all of it's time outside. That is not fair to the dog. You can try a hypoallergenic dog. Maltese are usually the best because their hair is comparable to human hair, oddly enough. If he still has problems, you can get a Mexican Hairless dog or a Chinese Crested dog. They don't have hair (just a tuft of the top) so there shouldn't be a problem. They're also very lovable and cute!

There are some breeds that people with allergies have less problems with than others. Most of the terriers such as the West Highland White Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Wire Fox Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Welsh Terrier, Cairn Terrier (just to name a few) and other breeds such as the Bichon Frise, Poodles, etc are also pretty good choices.
Before getting a dog, I'd suggest getting around the breed you're interested in and see how the dog effects him.
Also, regular bathing/grooming will also cut down on the allergy effect, and there are shots that he can get rather than a daily pill. I'm not certain how often the shots have to be given, but for some reason "every 6 months" comes to mind- but don't hold me to that lol

Poodles, Maltese & Bichon Frisses (spelling likely wrong) are all consider hypo-allergenic, as are a few other dogs who's coat is more like hair than fur. There are also products that you can use on a dog to cut down on the dander, which is what allergic people are allergic to. One brand is called "Aller-Pet" it comes in formula D and formula C, one for dogs & one for cats. You should be able to find it at any good sized pet store.

It depends on how allergic he is. If he is allergic to all dogs then I would not get one as you do not want to spend the rest of his life taking pills. I take pills for allergies and it is not fun.
On the other hand I have heard that their are some dogs that do not trigger allergies since the allergies are usually linked to the dog hair. Look into this situation. Find out if there are dogs that are supposed to be ok for allergic people and then test it. Find a someone who has a dog like this or a breeder and see if your husband is allergic to it.
I am not sure but I have heard that poodles are supposed to be ok because they do not shed their hair. I am not sure. Do some web surfing on the subject. Talk to the dog societies and the RSPCA etc and just see if it is possible. Vets might know also.

If my husband was allergic to dogs and I REALLY wanted one I would see if we could come to a compromise. Is he willing to take allergy pills the rest of his life? Well, now that I'm thinking about it, I wouldn't ask him to do that. I'd probably just have to get over it. He can't help that he's allergic to it.
