How often do you clean your freezer ?

I hate cleaning the freezer as I find it is an all day job but like everything else is something that must be done . How often do you clean your freezer ? Do you always find that there is something at the bottom of your freezer that spilled over like the fries because the bag wasn't tight enough or some other food ? Do you end up having to throw food away because you forgot it was there and now it is freezer burnt ? How do you feel after you have accomplised cleaning out your freezer . If we don't clean our freezer out we get a build up of ice on the sides which will cause our power to rise as it is harder for it to work the way it is supposed to with all the ice on the side of it . The older your freezer is the harder it will be on your power bill as well but who can afford a new freezer all the time ? How often do you buy a new freezer ?

About once a year . It is one of them big freezers that I think you are talking about and they are hard to reach inside . It is a big job and does take all day to clean it . I heard it costs more moeny to when tehre is ice inside of it and mine in really old so it always has ice on the inside .

Ugh what a chore and I really don't care for cleaning the freezer either . We have one of them big ice cream freezers that you can fit how many people inside so it takes all day and all night to clean so it only gets done once a year with the spring cleaning .

I only have the freezer in my fridge to clean so it isn't so bad I don't have a big freezer to clean . I would like to get one but only live in a trailer and don't really have room for one but it makes my cleaning a whole lot easier . I clean mine every couple of months or so when I am cleaning out my fridge .

Hi samtaylorskykierajen, We clean it more like once a year, part of the cleaning for the new year. Either that or someone would complain or we will spill something then we would start cleaning that bit then extend to cleaning the whole machine. We don't keep buying freezers.

Hi sam... The freezer with my fridge I just cleaned a month ago when I put new tile down in the kitchen..It looked worse than it actually was when I finally got to it...The underside of the refrigerator needed cleaning and now my fridge and freezer work better.... In order to get the basket out I had to move the refrigerator out to open the door wide enough to get in there...so that is why we did it when we were putting in the tile... I bought a free standing freezer and it is brand new so I haven't really had to clean it out as of yet... The fridge we have came with the house and it is going to be time to replace it...It makes some really weird noises...less now that we cleaned the underside but I think it is on it's way out....

I bought a new freezer ten years ago. It is an upright one. The dealer said he had the same model. It has to be cleaned every two or three years, only. I need to clean mine now, as it has gotten built up this year. Otherwise, it has been very good. I will get it done this fall. Maybe next week.

I would love to get a freezer like that and if you only have to clean it every couple of years there is nothing wrong like that . An upright freezer would be so much easier to clean then the one I have . Thank you for your response .

I dont' have to clean my very often we don't have much in it . There is only my boyfriend and I living togehter and we use the fridge more then the freezer so we don't have much in it and don't have to worry about fries spilling out on us . We dont' have ice in our freezer either . We won't buy one for a long time cause we don't really need one . The one we have on our fridge came with the appartment we are renting and until we have our own place we don't really need one .

Oh yes cleaning both fridge and freezer is a task which takes a lot f time, almost our entire day. I hate it too but as you said if we do not clean our freezer, we get a lot ofice and this will definitely cause our power to rise. Moreover we donot get the required space to store our stuffs since the ice consumes most of the space. It is really important to defreeze our freezer once in a while and clean it to enable smooth functioning of it as well us control the power consumption. I feel cleaning the fridge to be more hectic, since my fridge is really big and it really takes a lot of time to clean it.

I clean my freezer every month or so. The last time I cleaned it, it was in July. It is due for another cleaning this month. I also usually will buy the Baking Soda that keeps the freezer and the fridge cool and fresh. Foods stay fresher this way. I like to keep my freezer clean out because it keeps germs out of your food and it also keeps the fridge fresher.

I would say about once a year maybe? I have moved around so much that I can't really say without moving being an influence. The last time I cleaned mine was in November 2006 when we moved into our new house. I have wiped out the shelves and the front of the freezer since then, but never have a problem with things spilling on the bottom or things falling out of bags. I also never leave anything in there for a long period of time. I only have a fridge/freezer, so my freezer isn't very large and because we live out in the middle of nowhere I freeze all of my meat and bread when I buy it so it doesn't go bad before I have a chance to use it. My freezer doesn't smell funny either. I also have never had a problem with ice build up. I guess I got lucky? I don't know. My fridge is about 3 years old.

My freezer is over 20 years old and maybe that is why it is so hard to keep clean and has a build up of ice . It is also one of the big freezers so we keep it out in the garage and doesn't get cleaned as often as it should because of the age of it . Thank you for your response .

Well my freezer is all compartmentalized so each part of the storage can be taken out and cleaned, for convenience. Cleaning is as easy as taking a cloth to it, or dumping its compartments into water. I don't think my freezer is so cold that ice accumulates on the sides though.

I probably need a new freezer have never heard of them with compartments lol and does sound like it would be a whole lot easier then mine in which I can hardly reach the bottom to wash it . Thank you for your response .

Tupperware FreezerMates - Use tupperware freezermates - air tight, odourless, no spills, frozen food stays fresh longer
I have a good fridge Elba brand. The temperature of the freezer and the fridge can be set. I don't clean my freezer often as there are no spills, no odour at all. That's because I don't keep frozen food in plastic bags or cheap containers. I use the tupperware brand freezermates. It is air tight and modular. It freezes very fast and de frost fast as well. So it saves me time, money and cleaning time as well. but that does not mean I don't clean the freezer. Once in while I will take out everything and wipe it.

i clean our freezer every two months... and i must admit that its the toughest thing to clean up since you have to remove the thick ice that was formed on the sides... arghhh!

Our big freezer got cleaned and then shut off about a year ago. Our small, fridge freezer has been due to get cleaned out for a long time now. There's only 1 small bag of fish and some ice trays in it but the amount of ice build up is ridiculous. Of course the seal is bad so it builds up quickly and it doesn't help that I tend to spill the ice trays either. Now when we used the big freezer I would find spilled food or frost bitten food pretty frequently. That can make for a pretty nasty job.
