does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep my lhasa apso's hair from matting besides cutting it?

What the previous poster added is good advice. I'd also get a good conditioer and when you bathe her, use that and let it sit on her coat for a few minutes before rinsing it. Whenever the coat gets damp/wet, it will need brushed out and combed. Just brushing doesn't always get it all- you have to brush, and then comb. If the coat is allowed to dry without being brushed/combed out, matting will begin.

I would give it a thorough daily brushing (5-10 mins). Daily brushing should shine up the coat and keep it from matting. If the dog gets really dirty or muddy, wash it immediately before it dries. If it's really prone to matting, you could go to a specialty pet store or groomer and get daily detangler to spray on the coat. Spraying the coat before and after each brushing will keep it from matting. Hope this helps. Good luck.
