My Day started weird since I was waiting for Hurricane Ike but thankfully it went to the right and am fine.
I went to answer my store phone and saw outside this baby banging on a car window so i immediately went out and saw he was by Himself just sweating all locked up alone in a carseat..knowing babies he was at a year and a half..so i tried to get him to open the door all the while so worried about him in this Texas heat..no such luck..it wasn't working..so a guy coming down from the college saw what i was doing and tried to encourage the baby too..we went next door to the Bike shop and that man tried to open with a metal bar..nothing..this little boy was so brave just wiping his head and looking into my eyes..so heartbreaking for me..we called 911 and since the Fire station is around the corner they were on their way...this was at least 15 minutes now..so here comes a grandma saying its her car and gets in..well I'm fuming from all this and shocked about her leaving him alone..so i yelled roll your window down now..she did and i told her Shame on you..you should be locked up and suffer like he did so you will never do this again..she just looked at me and drove off well the Bike Friend got her license number and gave it to the police..so I hope they did something to her...
What would you have done in my spot?

I can imagine that you were terrified! It amazes me how many stupid adults kids have to rely on take care of them. She is definitely one of them! I hope the police would act on it, but the chances are that they wont since she was gone by the time they got there.
I probally would have been so freaked out that I would have broke the window without thinking about it. Especially if I could see that the kid was sweating and wanting to get out.
Recently I was at my real estate brokers office for a continuing education class and the Local police office is next door. Well as I was going to my car, I saw a car that was parked in the front of the parking lot, not even in a parking space. Parked as if they didn't want to walk from the parking lot and made there own parking space. I kind of looked at the car and said to myself I can't believe these people parked illegally right in front of the police headquarters. As I was passing I saw an infant type seat (the kind for newborns) in the car, but didn't really pay that much attention as I was headed to my car. After I got to my car which was at the very back of the parking lot and put my stuff in the trunk and let the car start to cool before taking off, it dawned on me that it was possibly a baby in the car, and that I should probally check it out. Low and behold there was a baby in the car seat with every window rolled completely up! By now from the time that I made my exit from the class probally 15 minutes had lasped. It was literally 91 degress outside per my car. As I started to turn around this woman comes up to me screaming that I need to get the hell away from her new car and that was the reason that she had parked there so nobody would mess with her car! I was furious, I was like do you know you left a newborn in a car and its 91 degree's outside? Her response was that she was in the sporting goods store and could not have been there more than 20-30 minutes so I needed to mind my own business and she drove away. I got her tag number and went inside to tell the police and they said it was nothing they could do since she was gone and as far as I could tell them there was no harm done or law broke! I was livid, and said to myself that probally sometime soon unfortunately I will probally here about that same kid lost its life on the news, because his stupid mom couldn't be bothered while she was shopping.

as far as I know, it is a law everywhere! Beyond that...it is just common sense! You do not take your eyes off a baby...simple! I had my first child 31 years ago before leaving your child in a car alone was even a law. The law came about because of people like that woman! I didn't need a law to tell me it was dumb to leave my baby in a car in any kind of weather. Yes, it is a pain, loading and unloading them while you run errands. They finally fall asleep and you will probably wake them by moving them to run a 2 min. errand. It's all part of being a parent.

So the Police said there was no Law broke??? What about child endangerment? Abuse and neglect? The childs rights?
So if i would have broke the window i would have gotten in trouble but she would be safe?
What a country we live in??? Stupid laws and stupid people

What a b!tch! She probably thought you were a nutcase or something but who the frick cares? You hear stories like this all the time on the news how a$$hole women leave their babies in the car like that, and yes, they usually do get charges filed against them for reckless endangerment to a child...glad your Bike Friend got her license and hope they do track her down and file charges....What's wrong with people anyway?

What i really wanted to do was put her in the carseat and lock the car up and sit it on a railroad track..I know then i'd be abusive..funny how you just don't think in cases like this

How sad is that, to leave a small child in the car in the kind of heat we have? Could the woman not be bothered to contend with the child while she did her shopping? I think I would have called 911 right away, then tried to get him out myself, somehow. It just kills me when I hear about a small child dying because the person in charge of them is that negligent. What kind of suffering does that poor baby go through while his little brain fries?
Ok, I have to stop. I will be spewing all kinds of venom in a minute, if I don't.
My hope would be that the police did do something about it, but chances are, because the woman left before they got there, they won't do anything until it happens again. And next time may be too late to safe that little boy.

I was reading about his little face, and how he just kept looking at you as if pleading for help. I got choked up just thinking about him. I do hope he is safe.

I would have called the police immediately and I would have made the woman stay put until they got there. She had no right to be caring for that child. Makes you wonder if the parents know she had done such a thing? Or are the parents just as worthless? There is no excuse for such actions. It is a child and this grandmother was entrusted with its care.

I would have called 911 right away and then tried getting the door open as well. Thank the goddess for good and caring people like you and your friend and I'm glad that someone wrote down the licence plate number, because people like this do not need to be in charge of children.
I hope something was done to her to teach her lesson not to ever do that again.
You did right and you showed a lot more restraint then I would have shown.I would have strangled that woman.

Hi Rosekitty, Well done for taking action, hopefully now she has been reported the police will do something. It is not fair on anybody or any animal being left in a hot car in heat like that. I would put her in a very high temparture sweat box til she suffered for being so irresponsible, I wonder if the mother of this child knows how he was being treated. Grrr, people like this make me so angry. I would have done the same as you. Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh thats so awful id have done the same I think you did what you could, while breaking a window is an option for an older childer who would move out the way its too dangerous with a small baby so I think you did all you could. Good for you taking the number plate down too hopefully they found her and gave her a telling off she wont forget. If it was the grandma too and she isnt sole carer I hope the parents found out too as if my parents ever did that to my children they wouldnt see them again thats for sure!

Aw that is awful, here in the UK you get told that you must keep a window slightly open for a dog left in a car. There is no way in hell a baby should be left unsupervised whether it is hot or cold. I would have done exactly what you did, and it makes me so angry when irresponsible people look after children. The best action for the police would be to inform the child's parents. I doubt the grandma would be babysitting again after that...

first let me say a resounding "good for you"! you did the right thing in all aspects of this situation. that poor little boy and you are right, shame on that woman. i am sooooo glad you got the license plate number and i hope she gets a good lashing. first of all i would never leave a child in the car alone. look what could have happened. you and those men were trying to get the door open, right? what if a kidnapper saw him and tried to make it look like he was trying to help him and got the door open and took him? then there is the issue of it being so hot on top of leaving him alone. there are so many people out there who should not have children in their care that it just blows my mind. you did a really good thing in trying to help that child. thank goodness for people like you.

This is not only painful but horrible to see the condition of that child. I have already heard and read about the parents locking the children in car and get away for shopping or any thing else. I is possible that the child is sleeping and we are only to go for a little period. It will be better to park the care at comfortable place where may not be so cold and so hot and the window pan just some how down.

i would do the same thing like you as well if i were in your position... i would not even let her leave before the police arrives... i don't care even if she is a grandmother... if she couldn't take the responsibility to look after her grandson properly, then don't take him out... i hope the police will do something to her and punished her accordingly... take care and have a nice day...

I would have called 911 immediatly. It is illegal to leave your child alone in the car even for a short time as anything can happen. I am a gram and I am very sure that if I ever ever left one of my grandchildren alone in a car like that, my daughter would never let me have the kids again. I couldn't blame her. I know some younger parents are inexperienced and don't seem to know better. Even that is not a good excuse. But a gram? That is craziness. I do hope they do something to her.

hi rosekitty.
i would have done the exact same thing. it was good that you got the plate number of the car and you gave it to the police. amy i suggest that you call your local police station to find out what has happened adn if any cahrges were filed? this clearly is a reason why there are so many senseless deaths of young children. adults who are suppose to be responsible often neglect their responsibilities. i ahve a two year old daughter and i would never think of leaving her alone in the car. i even have second thoughts of leaving her in a room even if she's aslepp so i can go out and do something. if ever i do leave her in a room, i check on her often.
it really pains me when i read things about this. did you hear about the infant deaths in china because of a contaminated milk formula? the people responsible for such atrocious things like that should be dealt with and they should be punished to the full extent of the law.
anyway, i pray that the child is alright and i'm greatly thankful that there are good samaritans such as yourself who are willing to extend to lend a hand.

That's terrible. I never leave my son in the car, and I especially wouldn't do it during summertime in the South with the windows up. That's how children die. I can't tell you how many times I've heard of kids dying from being left in the car with the windows up.

Hey Rosekitty! I think you did exactly the right thing! I
would have done the same! I hope the police go after her
for sure! How dare she leave that poor little baby in the
car like that! She just came back like it was nothing!
It's too bad that you weren't able to break into the car
and get him out! Maybe that would have scared her just a
little bit more. But, probably she just would have been
upset about her friggen car! What kind of woman leaves a
child alone for so long in a car with all those stories
of children suffocating in the heat this summer? I was
so upset reading this. I really do hope that the police
did go after her and at least write her some kind of
summons or contact the child's parent! Who knows how
many times she's done this already! Good work Grandma!

The next city from where I live, There was a mom that left her four kids in the car for 5 min.
they were 10, 8, 5, 8 month. She went in to buy a mop and cereal and milk.
The police saw them. Only 5 min. She was arrested for neglect, child endangerment, child abuse, and no drivers license. 4 counts on the first three charges.
In Tennessee they don't play. You take care of your kids, if you don't and you get caught, they don't play.
Your nicer than me. I don't think I would have let that grandma leave.
It's hard to think when your mad and upset. You are frightened for a child's life, I guess at that time your just glad he's alive. Anyone can say what they would do, until there their
you can't know.
I'm sure the police will get her.
