Hi Myloters,
I have a friend who is married to an Australian and she have two beautiful kids that look so different from her. One day they go for holiday shopping in Philippines with her sister. This friend of mine has dark color skin because she is an instructor for golf playing. Anyways they go to this shop in Philippines and as they go in this salesperson look at her from head to foot like lets ignore her she don't have money. Later on her kids came over and called her mum then the salespersons at the shop start entertaining her all over the show trying to sell their products. What she did she talk to this ladies very nice and told theme that the way they treat their costumer wasn't right then they left without buying anything from that shop.
How could people can be so judgmental like this. This happen to me a lot of time as well. I think salesperson in the shop should realize that their job is to sell products not to choose costumer to entertain. I mean I knew there are people go to shops and don't buy anything but thats because they cant find something they like in that particular shop.
If you get treated like this what would you do?
Thanks for your time Myloters
Happy Myloting

Yes, I had that kind of bad experience in some shops. Some times it is because the sale person was too busy , some times just carelessness. Your friend did the right thing. I would just leave without buying any thing there. And, I might never go back to that shop again !

I have been ignored many times by sales people.Im guessing its because of my age.(I'm 21) Everytime I walk into a jewelry shop or a car dealership I get looked at but completely ignored. The most recent car that I purchased I got very upset at BMW because the sales person about my age made a joke about my mother paying for my car.I have a job and i pay for my own car.Well i got upset and talked to the manager and I ended up buying the car from the manager, who was really profesional about it.If I was ignored in a shop like your friend was I would speak to the managment.

This has happened to me as well in many stores. Customers service is becoming a thing of the past. People will not help others out anymore when it comes to things that they are looking for. It is ridiculous, and it is the number reason that I will not go back to certain shops.

Many a times the shopkeepers see a particular customer and form an opinion that they are not going to buy and so tend to ignore. But as you rightly said that if we like something then only we would make the purchase. But even if the customer has entered a shop, its the duty of the sales person to attend to the customer politely.Thats what they are being paid for.Very few shops have commission based incentives for sales persons and even in those shops the sales person should attend everyone.Commision based incentives tends to make the sales man/woman aggressive in order to achive higher benefits.

That's really frustrating and racist. I would have been really upset if something like that happened to me. I think your friend did the right thing by leaving and not buying anything. They didn't deserve to make any profit from her after treating her in that way.
I haven't been treated in the same way that your friend was but I was ignored by a salesperson once. I wanted to ask her if she was in charge or helping people with job applications by the computers. She was talking to two women that were her friends I'm guessing. I was standing right there waiting for a break in the conversation so I could ask her my question but they just kept talking and I didn't want to be rude. She then looks around, I'm standing right next to her, and she pretends that she didn't see me and goes back to her conversation and then I just tell her "excuse me" and she finally pays attention. I start to ask her my question and before I could finish she tells me that she called the lady already and she's coming.
I figure someone else asked the same question so I go back to my boyfriend by the computer (he's the one I asked the question for) and I tell him what she said and we wait for a good 10 minutes. Still no one is coming so he comes off the computer because he was occupying it waiting for the woman to come and other people were waiting to use it. When we walk away from the computer the same saleswoman asked me if we need any help and I told her that I already told her and repeated what I asked her before. She tells me "I didn't fully understand what you said." I'm usually the most unconfrontational person you could meet but I was mad and all I said back to her was "You could have asked" with a confused expression on my face because I didn't get why she didn't just ask me to repeat myself. I felt like she just wanted to get back to her conversation instead of work so she told me anything to get me out of her way. She couldn't say anything back to me. She had the nerve to go to her other little friends that worked there and tell them that I was being nasty to her. I wanted to tell her that if I really wanted to be nasty I would go to the manager and complain but I just let it go.

Unfortunately, things like this continue to happen no matter where you live. Even here in the USA, I see things like this happen and continue to happen, and I think it is Rude and unfair. How can you judge a person $$ wise just from their color, the way they dress, etc? Your friend I feel did the right thing, and I hope the workers in that shop noticed this, and felt bad about it. Where did people go wrong in forgetting about Customer Service no matter who the person is?

I'm usually grateful when they ignore me. Mostly, they hover and I can't stand it. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

I have dealt with slaes people like this before. It is rude for them to treat employees like this. I have always said not to judge a book by it's cover, because you never really know someone untill you get under their skin and see what's on the inside.

hi eve I hate it when I am ignored like that as if I was a
second class citizen and when they do it because of your
race they are really not doing their jobs. they should be fired if they cannot relate to and serve the customers too. If I
was treated like that I would ask to talk to the manager and
I wou ld complain about the way the clerks treated me. if she
did not make this right I would ask to talk to the owner.

I would leave the store. If I were really mad I'd complain first and then leave the store. And if I were really, really mad, I'd make sure to tell them all about the nice big sale that they missed out on while I was complaining!

Yeah it happened to me once. I was with this outfit (shorts and t shirts because i came all the way from an outing) . I stopped by a big mall to buy a dress for a party that i am about to attend. The shop is a pretty fancy one, so when i entered the shop with that kind of outfit nobody seems to see me or wants to entertain me. To my dismay i called the supervisor and asked her if i could get a size of the dress i like . The supervisor give it to me and i fit afterwords i went to the cashier (now with all smiles at me ) accepted my cash . And said thank you for shopping. If not for that dress i would never really would buy from them but the thing is the dress is really good and i know i could not find one similar to that so despite of my disappointment on how they treat me i still bought from them. I guess a lot of people are judgmental and they judge you by mere looking at you .

That's really dumb. You should first report him to the manager or supervisor and get him fired or something. And if the manager is the same way, then you can ruin the reputation of that store by telling your friends what they've done with you. You can also take it to the authorities or something if you want.
I remember once I was in a shopping mall and there was a sale rep was really busy, I asked him a question and he just said, "I don't know" and walked away. I understood he couldn't help because there were plenty of people asking him stuff so I just let it go. (It was on boxing day).
All in all, I think it's wrong if a sales rep ignores you. I mean it's their job to help customers and it'd be better if they did it efficiently.

Our world is not a fair place and unfortunately such racism happens. This has not luckily happened to me and I hope none of you people out there have to face this. People should report such racism somewhere and I hope that after 10 years we won't be having discussions like this.

oh yes... in fact, it just happened last week in a butcher shop... i want to buy a meat in a vietnamese butcher shop that i usually go... but last week, when i enter the shop, the shopkeepers just keep on chatting and chatting without even looking at me or acknowledging me... after about 5 minutes standing like an idiot, i decided to move to another butcher shop nearby... the service is exceptional... they greet me as soon as i enter the shop and service me like a queen... i even ask them to cut the meat for me into small pieces to save my cooking time and they did it for me happily... i am really impressed... i will never go back to my usual store again... they had just lost huge sales from me and now i have a new shop which i can go to... take care and have a nice day...

If they ignore me anyway, I will go away as soon as possible. It makes no sense to scrub in.. Also, there are a lot of such kinds of shops .Thus we don't need to waste our preciuos time there. I will be not happy with them if they behave so impolitely

I'm from the Philippines, and yes, I occasionally experience being ignored by salespeople in department stores. But I try not to mind that too much, because at least they're not following me around like I'm about to steal something. It REALLY makes me conscious whenever a salesperson is tailing me while I'm checking out the merchandise; it's like he/she is pressuring me to buy an item so they could already make their sales quota for the day. :-D I've also heard stories of of discrimination against Filipinos in Singapore shops, particularly the duty-free stores in airports.
My mother-in-law used to work as a salesperson in a major department store when she was younger, so she knows that salespeople should treat their customers equally and fairly, whether they plan to purchase anything or not.

Yes I have and this is what I did once. I walked through the store and gathered all the clothes I could carry, took them up to the counter, and had the cashier ring it all up. When it came time to pay I pulled out a load of cash and said; " Next time achknowledge me when I come into your store", and walked out.
