Is it possible for a dog to have ADD (attention deficit disorder) because i think my Pug has it! he is always misbehaving and getting into trouble just so he can get some attention! He is just so hyperactive all the time and pinches everything he can get his teeth into, he is just like having a little toddler around the house and you have to watch them 24/7 to make sure they don't get into things that can harm them! He just got himself kicked outside because he just wouldn't sit still and was getting around the house looking for things that he could get into and see what he could pinch so he could bring it to me and I would then have a game of chasey around the house with him to get it back ... Oh he is a little buggar but I just love him to death and could live with out him So what do you think is it possible for a dog to have this????????

Lol. That's not ADD. That's a dog that found a strategy that works. Your dog sounds very bored. Please make sure you walk him for 20 minutes a day twice a day. This should help his behavior and is also important because pugs tend to have issues with their weight and obesity. How old is he? If he's a puppy, he needs a lot of playtime. I would spend 3 5-10 minute sessions a day in addition to the walks to play with him. He should also have a couple of daily obedience sessions where you teach him the basics like sit, stay, etc. That being said, if you are trying to have time to yourself and he is begging for attention, ignore him. He needs to learn that he will only get attention if he is calm and well-behaved. If he does something bad to try and get attention, a firm "no" while he is doing whatever it is he's not supposed to do followed by ignoring him should do the trick. He'll soon realize that being bad will just get him a no, not any really attention. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hi Xcammiex, thanks for the advise but nah its not coz he is bored I'm afraid he is just very spoiled, the problem is he gets too much attention and I am always buying him new toys and different types of dog treats for that very reason so he doesn't get bored with the old ones! He is about 16mths old so no longer a puppy any more and yes he does sit, stay and also beg and yeah we go to the local park regularly.

I would like to add that a dog is a puppy til they are about 3yrs old depending on the breed sometimes 2yrs old..mine are 11 on boxing day but the brother still thinks he is 5 and has a lot of energy mine are bearded collie cross..with obedience lessons and a bit of agility they are fine only the sister is growing ld gracefully..also mine are spoiled but they know there place in the family and in the wild they live in packs when they are old enough to be on there own they follow one leader and that is the b*tch of the pack in this case it is you and in mine am not saying that you are a b... but dogs need a need a leader and you are that person..hope that helps too and am not meaning to offend you in anyway but to try and give you a bit of advice...littleowl

Hi Little Owl no worries you haven't offended me at all and yes I know how all that the way dogs run in packs in the wild and that normal there is an alpha dog and that pets normally see you as that alpha dog and yes he does see me as that boss and he also knows that he is lower down in the line of command then my other dog and boy does she let him know it too

Hahha. All dogs seem to have ADD. Especially puppies. They love to get your attention, being around you, touching you with their paws, licking your face, jumping on you. To be honest I love their attention. Do you think I might be an ADD too?

LOL I dont think its ADD, I think its just the nature of that particular breed of dog...Jack Russels are like that too, its their natural wiring if that makes sense..

yeah I do I know what you mean they are just so full of energy and always on the go. They are just so cute when they tuck their tail in between their back legs and do pug zoomies around the house and they are always happy with big smiles on their faces.

Is he still a puppy? I believe some breeds of dog are more hyperactive than others, our Cavalier King Charles was and was also totally untrainable until she got older. You could try altering his diet to a fresh foods only (no tinned food). Increase the number and length of walks he goes on and get him some irresistable toys so he will leave your stuff alone. Puppies are just like little kids, curious and full of energy.

Some breeds never grow out of it. I guess that is why we haven't been game to get another dog.

Sounds like our dogs may be related. I think that is just typical doggie behavior. My dog is a whippet mix. And whippets apparently need alot of attention. And she usually finds a way to get it.

yeah i have also heard that whippets are full of energy and need lots of attention but I have never meet one myself so i cant say how true that is but sound like you will get loads of exercise with her long walks

Hi msmell..I think it is possible for a dog or any animal to suffer from what we do in your dog's case it does sound like hyperativity..have you ever thought of taking him to obedience lessons dogs enjoy that as it stimulates their minds into action as to what they should and shouldn't do dogs love learning and playing teach him to fetch and even entertain agility classes for him that would also help with the excess energy he has..he would also look forward to that..hope that helps..littleowl

Oh yeah he sure does have hyerativity thats for sure! But you know the funny thing is that he does have some obedience like if you open the front door, the back gate or the even garage door he knows that he is not allowed to go out there so he doesn't even try and yes he has been taught to fetch they love playing that I have seen in one of the dog forums someone else talking about doing agility classes with their Pug might have to seriously think about this one....

I'm not sure, I'll ask one of the vets at work. Though I think that your pug has probably just suffering from pug syndrome! Always wanting to be the centre of attention. Your puggy sounds so gorgeous! Naughty little boy. My baby pug is 9 weeks old and she steals stuff but she doesn't want me to chase her yet! She'd prefer to just sit there chewing and chewing. I'll ask the vet and try to remember to post an answer.
