I took french in highschool for two years.......Un chat chapeu and other useless phrases is about all I retained.
I took 4 semesters of spanish in college pretty much nothing retained there either.
I took 2 semesters of latin in college can still read it for the most part.
I am self learning Irish and German.....slowly.
Do you take to new languages easily? Or is it hard for you? Oh I am also self taught on sign language (I am hearing impaired but I read lips so that helps but I am not very good at signing either).

Hi, I think being able to speak more than one language is a privilege. My mother tongue is Arabic, I've learned English my whole life at school and now I live in France so I was forced to learn French. My kids speak the three languages fluently and I think that's something that would help them in the future. I heard that when you know three languages the forth is much easier to learn.. Do you think this is true since you're an expert in learning languages?

I am no expert. I can only say a handful of useless phrases in both french and spanish can only read some latin. I am just beginning on the journey to learn irish and german.

I love languages, and I plan to study them when I go to college next year. I speak Spanish pretty well, and I am also learning Swedish since my boyfriend lives in Sweden and we visit each other, so it would be nice to know his language. I will actually be visiting my boyfriend in Sweden and we will visit Spain this December, I will be in Sweden a month and Spain a few days out of that month. In high school we had to take a mandatory four years of Latin, which really helped me in learning other languages since so many have roots in Latin, and I had to take one semester in Greek, which is also applicable to other languages, so I am good to go! haha.

I would not say that I take to them easily, but I take to them just the same. I think few things broaden the mind more than traveling and learning other languages and cultures. And when we cannot travel, studying the language and literature of a place we would like to go is better than nothing.

I think that learning languages is one the best things that you can do.I can speak enlgish, spanish, tagalog and just a little bit of french..I wish I knew more but learning languages takes a lot of time and I dont have all that much time. Its a little bit on the easy side for me to learn languages because of the spanish..Most languages have rootwords that come from latin and knowing spanish really helps.I tried sign language for a while to but I think that it just wasnt for me since i already use my hands alot when I talk

i am really finding it hard to learn new languages. i am really interested in learning other languages but i think its just not for me. right now, i only know filipino and enlish.
we have over 70 dialects here in the philippines and 2 of them (dialects of both my parents) i barely know. since i grew up here in the urban setting where majority speaks filipino, it would be really hard for me to learn them (dialects) since only a few speaks them.
just not for me...

There are a lot of languages i would like to learn, Danish and Russian being only two of them, but I'm better in my own language, because I think so literally. We'll see what happens, some day. My husband speaks Russian, and has a really extensive Russian course on CD that I can use, so that might be helpful.

It depends how, and who teach you the language ... it's easy when you know some basics and just go to the country which language you want to learn, meet some friends and try everything(and even more) what you have done already, go to postoffice,as I said make friends, go to shop, go to swimmingpool - it's good at the beginning to just listen and so you know a little bit how the language sounds. You know ... taking some calsses(especially school) to learning new language, most of the time is very boring I toke about 5-6 years english in my old school but after that I coudn't say much in english I was hm 14? 15 hm Now I'm 19 and it's a little bit better :) and it's because then I didn't want to learn new language at all, I did take it too seriously, you know to get some good score(someting like, just learn to pass and forget ...) but I can't learn when I take it too seriously it has to be fun, I think everybody learns faster and better when it's just a lot of FUN, it's nice to get some help but it's better when you learn by yourslef. I took also 2 years french, the lessons were a lot of fun and I liked it(it was 2 years ago :)) and I have forgot the most what I have learnt, it's because I don't have any friends who speak french ... I don't watch french tv or listen to french radio ... Well, I speak dutch, polish and a little bit english and now I learn spanish, no classes, just a course pimsleur and it's good, you have to be very active to work with it, you have to use your brain and really, IT IS VERY GOOD I'm just on chapter 2(it's on CD)I listen to this cd in my car, so I can speak loud :) to repeat, when I finish it I am going to spain :D Cheers

As of now I can only speak two languages English and Tagalog (Philippines). I find it hard to learn a new laguage because I'm struggling to pronounce the words better and I can't easily memorize the words. But I would like to learn sign language also which I don't know how far I can go.

I guess it would be pretty hard for me to learn a new language. Yet I think it would still be worth it to learn new languages. I plan to take up language courses on japanese because I love to watch japanese ahows like anime. Although it will be hard, it would be worth it because in the long run, having to know a few more language will help you in your life. Also you must also use them consistently as to not forgetting the words/phrases. Good day and happy mylotting! :)

A cat hat? Not sure why you learned that phrase. lol.... I took 6 years of French and remember quite a lot. I can pick out words that I recognize when reading or listening to French and somewhat get by, but I'm not fluent. I was close when I was in high school, but it's been a long time. I tend to be able to remember words that I pick up in passing. I have learned some Spanish words, but I can't speak it. I only took a semester of Spanish in middle school and didn't like it. I wish I could learn German. I know a little bit of German words and recognize some things though, because my family is German. I can pick up things pretty easily, I just haven't applied myself to self-study. I would like to learn Spanish because so many people speak it here in Iowa, but don't have a good way to learn. I will say, though, that it is usually more difficult to learn languages when you are older. That's why most people will remember things they learned in school, but not as much that they learned as adults. It's because most of your language learning occurs at a younger age, so it can be harder to remember when you get older.
