What was your favorite volunteering experience or place/organization?
I haven't done tons of volunteering but as a teen I volunteered for my local library in the summers. I got to help with all of the summer reading club things. The called us 'Library Heroes' and we got to assist with all the summer activities like puppet shows, an archeological dig, crafts etc. I always had so much fun doing that.

Not far from retirement myself, and I want to go and do some voluntary work myself,I have decided that I want to volunteer at the local steam railway centre, its a bit away from me,but its ok I can manage to get there.I dont know anything about trains, but they are willing to teach new volunteers to do a lot of things, even how to drive a steam train, well when I was a lad that was a dream of mine,.But im none too bothered about starting at the bottom meself,if they say sweep the rails then thats good enough for me,or I could help out in the tea rooms or the gift shop, owt will do me really.

I'm sure once you retire it will be nice to have a volunteer opportunity to fill your time and have some fun...and that definitely sounds like fun!
Since that is something that has interested you since childhood it should be a great experience. I've only ever rode on a train once or twice in my life.

Oh, in the early 70's I started to work on archaeological excavations as a volunteer. Eventually, I got so good that I started to work in archaeology full time and I did that for nearly 20 years.

Being a volunteer on an archaeological excavation would be so cool. When I was I kid I was fascinated by archaeology.
The fact that your volunteer experience led to your career is amazing.
Volunteering at the library made me consider becoming a librarian. I ended up not going to college for that, but I've been contemplating getting a master's degree in Library Sciences because of it.

I have volunteered in science classes with children, with a rabbit rescue, a cat rescue, a guinea pig rescue, and a marine mammal rehabilitation center.
I have to say, volunteering with marine mammals has definitely been my favorite experience. Yeah, sometimes I end up covered in poop and it is totally disgusting! But other times it is just so cool to see that elephant seal eat fish on its own when just a few weeks ago it was being tube fed.

The greatest and most unforgettable volunteering experience I've had was back at Chennai, India, when the Tsunami struck and left thousands of people homeless and shattered. I hope such massive disasters never occur again.

I never had an experience like that. Doing work after such a disasterous event must be such a rewarding thing. I can't imagine how horrible it would be to go through that, so I agree with you, I hope such a massive disaster never occurs again.
Thank you for your response.
