Aside from being addicted to myLot, I'm addicted to downloading shows and movies off the internet. I love getting stuff for free, and watching tv shows that don't air in my country is a guilty pleasure for me. The problem is, of course, that leaving the laptop on for several hours every day makes it really hot. I'm scared of causing overheating some day. I read the manual again and it doesn't say anything about over heating. SO I need your help! What do you think is the maximum time I can leave my laptop on? For those whose laptops have overheated before, why did this happen?

Hello there, there was a time that my hubby was working non stop and his mac outlet almost over heat, the socket looks like it was about to burn, that was I think 48 hour straight on the socket. My laptop usually on use from 10 am to 12 in the midnight and I think it is not over heating, just don't forget to plug it out when not in use.

One thing to try would be to ensure that it is well-ventilated. Don't put it on soft, cloth-like material or on your bed or something. Keep it on hard, flat surfaces. And don't put it in the sun or anything.
That might help a little bit.

I would not leave my laptop trying download software during the night in case it get overheated. Remember that the consequences of over heated laptops can be quite serious. Your laptop can be severely damaged and may require expensive replacement of major system hardware. A laptop was never meant to be used like a main computer.

I use my laptop most of the time im online. I bought a thinkpad just because they are know for running cool and being really reliable. Mine only gets on in the corner where the heat vent is if i have the bottom of that corner covered where its sitting at. I always keep it propped up so that air can circulate in that area. I use a program called Everest to monitor temps this program can see all other stats about your computer. When my laptop gets really hot which is pretty rarely the fan will spin up faster and is a lot louder then normal. all laptops have a cooling fan for the processor and will adjust speed as they get hotter.
I would say that the best investment in keeping a cool computer is to occasionally blow out the vents with some compressed gas called duster. I use this all the time to clean out the fans in my desktop that i built. whenever i clean my desktop i blow out the fan on my laptop also. I have been surprised by how much dust comes out of my laptops vents sometimes.
Anyways if your laptop is always constantly running hot try blowing out the vents with the duster. If it just gets hot after a lot of use make sure nothing is blocking the vents which usually mean the bottom. all of the air on my laptop at least is sucked in the bottom and blown out the side. If you notice the fan get louder thats a good sign that its not getting good clean air for ventilation. laptops are meant to run hotter then desktops and will just throttle the processor which means cut back its speed or shutdown completely if they get to hot so you shouldn't have to worry about it burning up.

That's an interesting tip I'll have to keep in mind. I never bothered to look under my laptop though. I see some squares and screen thingies maybe I'll blow on it next time. :) I'm thinking of just getting a house fan for my laptop. Not only will it keep me cool, it'll help prevent my laptop from overheating as well!

Laptops tend to get very hot if you leave them on for long periods of time. I mean they're not really meant for being used as a primary computer. They're meant to be used on the go and if you need to entertain yourself when you don't have access to a PC.
Just try to shut off your laptop every time you go to bed. I think it's fine if it's on for a while just make sure it's not running 24/7. Oh, and it's a good idea if you can manage to have lots of space under the laptop so the air can flow from under. If you can manage to have lots of space under, I don't think it'll heat up that quickly. You should also keep the laptop on hard solid surfaces whenever you can. Hope this helps!

My laptop sits on a glass table, so I don't think circulation is very good. I never put it on my bed though. Maybe I'll put it under a stack of papers to help circulate the air more. I also unplug it every time I go to sleep. I get scared of leaving it on overnight because it might overheat and set my house on fire!

laptops these days are meant to be placed on desk as the cooling vents become covered if e.g on a lap using on a bed and so on. if were you i would be more wooried about all the copy right laws and so called getting all the free stuff

well, i own a laptop but i use it solely for browsing and checking mails only... i never use it to download movies, songs, etc... my hubby use his PC to do that... i think it is not a good idea to leave a laptop on for a very long time as it is not designed to do that... even my hubby's PC will get hot if it is left on for a long time... let alone a laptop... anyway, i think you can buy a fan to help to cool down your laptop if it is really necessary... take care and have a nice day...

Laptops typically run hotter than a desktop computer (and in fact can actually get hot enough to burn your lap!) because they are so small and don't have a very good cooling system built in. They sell pads to go under laptops with fans in them that help to keep them cool during extended usage. I have used mine all day many times without hurting the computer though. It is normal for them to get hot.

Good day.. Yes I've been using laptop for the past several years. 1st it's very convenient I can bring it anywhere I need to specially on wifi hot spoyts where I could hook up to the internet for free. It's fashionable and private. My messages and other confidential files are only accessible by me unlike with public computer.
Heating is one of the primary problems of laptops, given that it has a smaller and compact architecture which could contribute a lot to it compared with a desktop where there is enough space for air to circulate, not to mention one can replace nad improve the existing heat sink fan which in laptops are next to impossible.
The common mistake of users are to put it on their bed. As we know the cushions on our bed could conform to our laptop and it could clogged it's ventilation thereby causing air trap and increase the temp. A cooling pad could resolve this issue.
