How can I stop from hurting my babies???

Romeo & Kip - These are my 2 babies. They love staying right under my feet. That is NOT a very safe place for them!!!

I had a cat for 21 years who never got near my feet even from the first day I had her. She died back in June & I adopted 2 little boys that were about 8 weeks old when I got them. Now they are about 5-1/2 months old & they seem to suddenly stay under my feet. No matter how hard I try watching out for them they seem to scoot right under my feet frequently. I fear hurting them permanently & would die if I did!!! Do you have any idea what I can do to teach them not to get near my feet???

There is NOTHING worse than going into a job for just the monetary satisfaction!!! I have ALWAYS adopted my cats. Usually they were strays that just showed up on my doorstep. These 2 I actually adopted from the Humane Society.

Do you think it is a good idea that you keep them in a yard or garden while you are cooking for example. It is very easy to spill a boiling kettle or something else that might hurt your cats. You can always let them back when you are finished from cooking.

Generally speaking, the behavior is likely something the two cats picked up with their mother while kittens. Whether it was playfully stepping under their mother while she was walking around in attempts to get her to play with them, or if the mother of the two cats constantly stood over them in a protective manner whenever they walked around. Most likely it's the former and the cats keep doing such because they want some more attention and play, which is likely due to their age. They're still kittens after all. Chances are you will step on them sooner or later, but you'll likely minimize damage in a jerked, surprised reaction alone, preventing you from putting your full weight down in your step(though be prepared to trip in the meant time). For the time being try to keep from taking smaller steps(at least elevation wise), more or less just short of dragging your feet, nudging them out of their way with your foot if they get in the way. To prevent them from getting in your way in the first place, you can simply provide a distraction by tossing a toy in the opposite direction of where you walking, getting your cats to focus on that instead. One trick I liked to use was to carry around a laser pointer with me and simply got my cat to chase the little red dot ahead of me. Of course, these distractions won't solve the problem in itself. That's simply going to be a matter of rinse and repeat practice with disciplining when it's doing unwanted behavior. Yelling at it can be counter productive sometimes since it might just see that as having your full attention, and may increase the behavior just to make sure it gets your full attention whenever it wants. The best deterrent I've found for a cat has been a simple, garden variety, water bottle. A majority of cats will absolutely hate getting squirt with a stream of water, and will bolt after being hit by the first squirt and start grooming themselves where they got hit. So long as you don't squirt water into the cat's ears, it's completely harmless to boot.

YES, the water bottle works wonders on training!!! I've used it before. But, so far, I have not needed it to train these 2 guys. It seems one HATES water & the other LOVES it. Might be worth a try as the one who gets stepped on the most just happens to be the one who hates water!!!

The best way is to startle them when they do it. Buy a can of compressed air (the kind used to clean keyboards) and spray it when they are underfoot. After a couple of days they will learn that tripping you causes that nasty hissing sound and they will avoid doing it again.

Hey LadyM, I have the same problem with the 2 I have and the 2 I had. When the 2 I had were babies Jaguar (who is now deceased about 4 1/2 years) was always under my feet. One day he tripped me and I hit my knee against a dresser and ended up dislocating my right knee. He was fine, but I sure wasn't! Now my Star & Luna constantly are rushing in front of me and every now and then Star gets stepped on and I feel so bad. Now they are 4 1/2 years old so they should know better, but they don't. They just run out from wherever and try to beat me and that's what happens. So I wish I could tell you how to stop them from getting near your feet, but I haven't been able to do it in the 4 1/2 years that I have them and the 15 years that I had my Cougar & Jaguar. It's just a cat thing! Don't worry LadyM, you won't hurt them, but do be careful because you might get hurt yourself!

In all honesty, I worry about ME almost as much as I worry about them. Kip runs down the hall to beat me to the bathroom. I don't have a problem with that. It's when he's laying still & runs to get his foot under my foot & then yells at me for doing it drives me nutz!!!

You might need to yell at them or something. So they know to stay away from feet.

Are they trying to play with your feet? Other than driving you crazy, what are they trying to do?

Whenever my cat gets under my feet or in my way, I kind of stick my foot under her belly and lift her up with it and give her a little toss away from me. It doesn't hurt her, but she hates it, so she doesn't really get underfoot very often unless she's really hungry or something. I don't worry about it too much though- because I have stepped on her a few times, and usually I'm the one that gets injured, not her! I've fallen due to tripping on her and she's clawed my feet and ankles a couple of times when I've accidentally stepped on her tail. For being so small, cats are pretty resilient.

That makes me feel better. It's just that Dayum you look I get & the guilty feeling that follows that bothers me!!! I had one kitten many years ago that I did the foot under the tummy routine. He got to where he loved rolling down the hall. It was cute when he weighed 5 pounds. But at 15 pounds it wasn't so funny!!!

hun, I have a nearly 3 yr old cat who has been stepped on REPEATEDLY! He still gets under our feet, he still gets stepped on. The reason is that he trusts us, even tho he's been repeatedly stepped on, kicked (not intentionally) and tripped over. Your boys are not likely to be permantely hurt so long as they are kept in the house. I think if there were any chance to hurt them passed when they passed 4 months old.

THANK YOU!!! The one who trusts me to rub his tummy is the one who insists I step on him too. They are & will ALWAYS be house cats. I've only ever had one outdoor cat & I tried to keep him inside. He'd slice my screens & let himself out for the day. When he'd hear my car coming he'd run back to the house & jump back in through the screen he had sliced open. I hope these 2 NEVER figure that one out. It's only been in the last 2 weeks or so they've gotten so bad about running under my feet. Romeo weighs 7-1/2 pounds & Kip weighs 8 pounds & they are no where near full grown. My vet calls them the Monsters. Kip just makes me feel soooo guilty when I step on him.

My Trusting Kip!!! - This is Kip. He loves his tummy scratched & hates it when I step on him. The vet says he's gonna be a HUGE cat when he finishes growing. He weighed 8 pounds when he was only 5 months old.
Kip trusts me so much he's always letting me scratch his tummy. Every time I sit down he lays at my feet & rolls over for me to scratch his tummy. And he's the one I step on the most. Then he cuts his sad little eyes up at me like I was the one who did something wrong.

Oh, that's too cute but I know your fear. My brother-in-law accidentally crushed a kitten when he jumped off a ladder hanging Christmas decorations. He was devastated!! Pull a bell on their neck so you can hear them when they are nearby. If not, if you are very busy, can you lock them in another room or a large pen? I love cats and have had many in my life. I love dogs but cats are special to my heart.

I am a cat lover also! I think that your babies are so cute! Give them a hug for me! Your could try clapping your hands before getting up,, see if that makes them skedaddle! I am not sure. I hope that you come up with something soon that works. I know that you will feel just awful if they are hurt. I have just raised my voice saying their names and they have moved.. every cat is so different!

Yes, every cat is different. These 2 little guys are smart & learn fast. That's why it surprises that they both have run under my feet more than once in the last few days!!!

Please be kind towards the babies. And whenever u feel they are in other way u just observe the positive things in. and please try to appreaciate for the good rather than punishing. hope this sort of attitude works well .

I have the same problem and have discovered I shuffle when I walk around the house now, especially when I get up at night...LOL That way if one does get in front of me, I won't step on them. Maybe you could take a bicycle horn and when you see them get under your feet, give it a honk or two. My cats hate for me to wave towels or napkins at them, you could clear a path if yours are the same.

Sorry, but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. I have this VERY problem with the new batch of barn kittens every year. I tame them and clean them up and give them new homes, so we only have our 2 females on a regular basis. I have had no choice but to give them gentle kicks on a regular basis, so that they fear being injured and with GOOD REASON. I'll tell you a true story; I was walking through the barn with 2 very heavy pails of grain and as I took a step, 1 kitten rushed in front of me and ran directly under my foot just as it was hitting the ground. All of my weight, and the weight of the grain pails were in that step, I guess. I squished him. He was irreparably damaged. I had to put him down to stop his suffering. I cried. It was an AWFUL experience. That is why I have now opted to be slightly cruel to be kinder in the end. They are not afraid of me when I stop to call, coo at or pet them. But when I am purposefully walking through the barn, they GET OUT OF MY WAY. And because of that, they are still alive.

well, i don't know that i have an answer for you either. i've read alot of the other responses and they all sound good. i have an 8 year old that is the same way. he purposely runs under my feet. as a few others said...i think they like it. maybe we all need to do some research to find out why they do it then we mght find out how to stop it. i've done the foot under the belly, i've yelled, i've pushed him away with my feet, i scoot my feet instead of taking steps. if they can't jump very high and your home is set up conveniently you could try a baby gate to keep them out of the way but where they can still see you and you can see them. then they are not caged but they are safe. try a spray bottle of water also. i doesn't work with my cat because he's older but it is a good training tool for kittens. good luck.

hmm..maybe you should to endure it..hmm..i guess the kittens just want to play with you or something they might want to you..but don't even try to hurt them..just let them stay under your feet..

Hello, maybe you should ask a VAT about your problem, maybe he/she would be able to advice you on some permanent solution. For sure it is not a solution to yell at them.

I try not to yell at them. But when one is screaming in pain & I'm about to fall, I can't help but scream at them!!! Then I feel guilty for yelling at the poor thing. What amazes me is they don't learn from the pain. If I burn my hand on the stove, I learn not to touch the stove. They don't. I've never had a kitten who didn't learn from being stepped on.
