I just kept on thinking "what if this would happen to you?" Does this condition afflict people in real life? If we have, what's it called?

I dont know but its sad to have that kind of condition. My heart will hurt when someone I know could have that situation but maybe I can comfort someone with that thing even that one cant remember me. By the way, the idea that constantly reminding the patient is sweet.

Actually it can, I had a friend who was in a four wheeler accident and he had a really bad brain injury. He came out of it ok, well he woke up that is, but we were so worried he had short term memory loss, because he could remeber everything before the accident and you could ask him if he remembered certain things and he did. But if he went to sleep, he would wake up and you would have to go through all of it again. He kept asking the same things over and over and over again for about a month. Which is pretty much like her. He doesn't remember the accident or even four weeks after. He is progressing slowly but there for awhile we thought he would be like that forever because we were all the time having to repeat ourselves. But I think it has something to do with your short term memory, not exactly sure what it is called but it can happen for real.

Yes it is due to (TBI) Traumatic Brain Injury. My son had a car accident a year ago and had a brain injury. Although he remembers his whole life before the accident and can retrieve the memories, things that happened after the accident take a while and repetition to store and retrieve properly. Sort of like dealing with someone with dementia. It is like you have a bad sector on your hard drive (the axons and neurons are messed up) and stuff (new memories) keeps trying to get stored there anyway. Sometimes you can retreve it and sometimes only a portion of it there. Eventually the brain seems to often find a new pathway -healthy axons and neurons) and new place (undamaged sector) to store the new memories and stuff. Because these areas are not damaged, your brain is able to find and recall them. My son's GF of 3 years made it one year past the accident and recently broke up with him. The memory and his irrational behavior and mood swings were too much for her.
