Do you think "spanking" is outdated?

There are so many new discipline techniques, both old and new. The "naughty spot", writing standards, time-out, grounding, taking away privileges. With all these techniques, do you think that "spanking" is obsolete? Why or why not?

I think that some people still spank, but I think that time out is a much better way of disciplining. If you are spanking a child, you are teaching him to solve problems by hitting. If you use the naughty spot, then they have time to cool off, talk about what they did and find a resolution so they don't do it again.

I disagree with you. I run a daycare and I can definitely tell which kids get spanked and which ones don't. The ones that are more aggressive towards others are the ones that get spanked at home. I know this is true in the situation with the kids I watch because the parents have told me that they spank. They are teaching their kids to be aggressive and hit when someone does something to them that they don't like.

I don't agree with spanking as a means of discipline. You can instill fear and hatred with spanking but you will never educate a child with it. I prefer other methods such as positive re-inforcement instead of corporal punishment. © ronaldinu 2008

Hi xcammiex, I have never believed in spanking as a means of discipline. Parents are the adults, spanking is telling the child that violence is okay. I'm sorry but this just don't wash with me, there are far better ways and the best behaved teens I know were never spanked. Blessings.

I think spanking is a disciple technique that needs a reemergence. Nothing like a good a$$ whipping to straighten out that miss behaving youngster. The problem nowadays is all the crimes that are being committed against children have forced people to reexamine the boundaries of disciple and cruelty. It is a shame that some take things out on the children. It is also unfortunate that this prevents us from disciplining our children via spanking, as this is viewed as child abuse now. I had a good paddling many times as a youngster and I turned out alright.

I think spanking is definitely the right way to discipline a child. Some people say spanking is wrong, because it is a form of abuse, but there is a difference between spanking a child & beating a child. Also, it's not just the spanking that changes a child & makes them into the "perfect" teenager. It's the explanation of what they did wrong & why they're getting spanked, and the training (which is different from discipline) that goes into it.

i could never see my self hitting my daughter.. i got hit but it didn't stop me from doing bad stuff.. i dont think its right.. i think the chair is the best way or take stuff away that they like and play with like video games and stuff.. my daughters only 8 months old but i would never hit her when she gets older.
