one way to distinguish appendicitis from other kinds of abdominal pain is that, when you have appendicitis, and you try to bend in your knee in such a way that your thigh comes close to your torso, you won't be able to do it because the pain would be severe.

hello magic slate, well that is indeed true. the abdominal pain in the case of an appendicitis does increase when there is flexion of the legs at the hip. also the typical pain in that case occurs laterally and two thirds beyond the umbilicus and towards the anterior superior iliac spine. so this kind of pain is usually the diagnostic pain. so if that pain occurs then there is a great deal of possibility that there is appendicitis. have a good day and thanks a lot for responding to my discussion.

The way you are describing the pain is more characteristic of acute pancreatitis in which the person bends his knees to bring near the torso. What praveenjena has described is the typical pain of appendicitis.Hope you benefited from my response.

inflammation of the vermiform appendix. Acute appendicitis, which has become common this century, usually affects young people. The chief symptom is abdominal pain, first central and later (with tenderness) in the right lower abdomen, over the appendix. This position is generally called the mcburney's point and pain in this region is characteristic of appendicitis. Unusual positions of the appendix may cause pain in different sites, leading to difficulty in diagnosis. Vomiting and diarrhoea sometimes occur, but fever is slight. If not treated by surgical removal by the procedure called appendicectomy, the condition usually progresses to cause an abscess or generalized peritonitis. Conditions that mimic appendicitis include mesenteric lymphadenitis, acute ileitis, pyelonephritis, and pneumonia. Chronic appendicitis was a popular diagnosis 20-50 years ago to explain recurrent pains in the lower abdomen. It is rare, and appendicectomy will not usually cure such pains. Appendicitis occurs more frequently in males than in females, especially at the time of puberty.
