Well it's a HUGE list and just searched the books that I read and think would make it in the list. I only found one which is "Les Misérables by Victor Hugo" number 873. This book was also created into a musical play which is very known in Broadway.
The list also included some books I want to read like "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain. The Count of Monte Cristo has an anime and a movie created based on it. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has a cartoon based on it.
How about you mylotter, what books have you read that are on the list? Can you recommend some books in the list?
Here's the link to the list in case you don't have one:

Happy reading!

I guess I need to get busy, I have only read 4 of them. In my defense though several of them are Sci Fi/Fantasy and I am not really in to that genre. I don't think I saw anything from my favortie authors: Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton, and James Patterson.

Janet's books are as tasty & addictive as potato chips, but I'd never rate them among the "great" books.

Well at least you already read 4, I only read ONE. hmm. Nicholas Sparks' books are not there, so as books written by Dan Brown. Those where the books that I read. I cannot compare those books that I have read from those books in the list since I only read one. So I cannot say they should be included or not. It just so happened that they were the ones I read. Oh I may be missing something here.

I'm probably going to have to post these 2 lists seperately.
One is the list of books I've read from the list and the other is of movies made from the list of books (at least the ones I haven't read.)

320 Interview With the Vampire – Anne Rice
389 2001: A Space Odyssey – Arthur C. Clarke
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Philip K. D. I. C. K. (won't let me put his name in normally) (the movie was called Blade Runner)
396 Chocky – John Wyndham
444 Stranger in a Strange Land – Robert Heinlein*
481 The Midwich Cuckoos – John Wyndham
487 The Wonderful “O” – James Thurber
494 The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien
508 Lord of the Flies – William Golding*
521 The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway*

574 The Little Prince – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
610 The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien
747 Tarzan of the Apes – Edgar Rice Burroughs
781 The Hound of the Baskervilles – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

821 The Mayor of Casterbridge – Thomas Hardy*
848 Around the World in Eighty Days – Jules Verne
854 Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There – Lewis Carroll
863 Little Women – Louisa May Alcott
866 Journey to the Centre of the Earth – Jules Verne
868 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll
906 The Count of Monte Christo - Alexandre Dumas
908 The Three Musketeers – Alexandre Dumas
911 The Pit and the Pendulum – Edgar Allan Poe (not actually sure I read it or just read so much about it...)
913 A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens
983 Gulliver’s Travels – Jonathan Swift
987 Robinson Crusoe – Daniel Defoe
996 The Thousand and One Nights – Anonymous
1001 Aesop’s Fables – Aesopus * these are the ones I had to read for classes tho Stranger in a Strange Land was okay.

Whoah! That's a lot of movies. Out of your list I have only seen three of those - The Great Gatsby, Memoirs of a Geisha, and The World According to Garp. There may have been some on the list that were school requirement reading and saw the movie as well, but I don't recall. My word, you have a great memory!

WHAT? You've never seen/read Robinson Crusoe? You need to read that, and Gulliver's Travels - can't believe you haven't seen that one - some really good animated movies about about that one - well, the first story in the travels. And Alice in Wonderland! good grief - what rock have you been living under?

Wow you too have a huge list. I'm happy many mylot users are good readers and avid movie goers. No wonder many people here can start great discussions.
Maybe because I'm Asian so the books that I read are written in my native language or by other asian countries.
I had watched the movie The Three Musketeers and also the cartoon series.
Well correct me if I'm wrong but is this somehow connected to Irom Mask?

Wow this is a nice discussion Leixa003! I've just finished reading all of the titles and I can't believe that I only read 5 books out of the 1001 listed. These are:
1. Veronika Decides to Die - Paulo Coelho
2. Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe
3. The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway
4. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo
5. Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
Although there are also some titles that I've watched the movie version like The Count of Monte Cristo, The Little Women, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Shipping News, well I guess all the novels I haven't read that has a movie, I've watched it.
I can't believe The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare is not included and The Little Prince by Antoine Saint Exupery also. Anyway, I've been looking for Jane Austen's Persuasion, The Catcher in the Rye, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Plague.

Thank you. I just happen to pass by the book in a bookstore but i could not afford to buy it (been on a tight budget lately). Good for you that you have five while I have just ONE. haha. The Alchemist didn't make it in the list also. I also watch movies from the novels I would like to read but haven't like The Count of Monte Cristo and I found the movie nice so the more I'm wanting to read the novel. I'm planning to watch Pride and Prejudice - the movie, haven't finished the book. Happy reading!

Thanks for the info. I think I like Oliver Twist but I think it has a cartoon based on the book so maybe I'll watch it first. lol! And by the way have you watch the musical based on Les Miserables? When I was in high school I played the role of Eponine, the one Lea Salonga plays in Broadway. I hope I can watch the play in Broadway but it's too expensive. :(

LO I passed 1001 great books YEARS ago! In fact, I've gone through TRIPLE that number. Stated in grade school with Shakespeare, Moby D*ck, Count of Monte Cristo, Arabian Nights, & on & on. By the time I hit 5th grade, my town had no more "great" books to offer me--& that included the high school AND town libraries. My Mom bought me a nice set, & I gobbled THOSE whole. Then I had to move to Houston, where the libraries could accommodate my addiction.
Currently I'm TRYING to plow through War & Peace (for about the 4th time), but you know, frankly, despite the many rave reviews, I'm finding it tedious.

I got part way through the list, found six I had read, only 2 of which I would consider deserve to be anywhere near such a list. There were several very ordinary spy tales/thrillers I have probably read, who remembers the titles of train-trip books, all by a particularly ordinary thriller writer, and some very ordinary sci-fi. I suspect I could come up with 100 in an hour which deserve to be there and aren't.
Lord alone knows how they compiled the list, but I would suggest it was on a populist poll of probably little validity. If it had been compiled from the suggestions of a panel of serious authors, poets, professors, historians etc. I would be far more impressed. Much as I'd like to get with your program Leixa, the list is so suspect I would see it as a waste of time.

That list is from the book "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" which is a literary reference book compiled by over one hundred literary critics worldwide and edited by Peter Boxall, an instructor of English at Sussex University, with an introduction by Peter Ackroyd. The book includes a brief synopsis and critique briefly explaining why the book was chosen. I think this book was published 2006.

Well, I own myself flabbergasted. I really can't find it in me to agree with many of the titles I saw, as I indicated already, which only shows what I know lol. I wonder what the parameters were on selection? Oh well, I'll go wash my mouth out with soapy water.

I also loved "The alchemist" but as I already said it was unfortunate that it wasn't included. I have to try the other books written by the same author to see if it is really better than the alchemist. harry potter is for all ages i should say and J.K. Rowling's future was greatly changed because of her books.

I read "The Spy who came in from the cold" Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Town Like Alice, Lord of the Flies, The Old Man and the Sea, Rebecca, but most of these were when we got the Readers Digest Condensed books. and lots of the 1800 books. I am a Jane Austin and Charles Dickens fan. So I love that they are on the list.
I will have to see what books I have read and see if they are on the list, I hope so. 1001 takes a long time to finish.

To kill a mocking bird was assigned to another group when I was in high school so I didn't get the chance to read it. My group was assigned to read Les Miserables and make it into play. I'm happy that Les Miserables got into the list. You should try it thou you can also try the musical in Broadway. Love the songs in the musical especially "On my Own"
Hope I too got the Readers Digest Condensed books. Happy Reading!

Thanks for introducing me to the list, but I can't help wondering why each was chosen. I've read more than 100 of them, but I feel like I've missed out on a lot. If I knew what makes each a candidate for the list, I'd choose my reading more carefully. Or maybe not. It would depend on the individual book's attributes.

Hi Leixa, I must thank you for providing this list. It sure brings back memories of books that I've read during my younger days in school, or those that my dad bought for me.
I've gone through the list, and could only come up with about 40 books that I've read. Anyway, it has provided me with names of some books or authors whom I shall explore!
Some of the books are a surprise too - like Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice, and the Body Artist by Don DeLillo.
Thanks and have a great weekend!

Thanks. I too was overwhelmed by the list. I found a book that was a required book to read in high school. We were even assigned to make a play out of it. I also remembered those days.
I think many where surprised to see Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rica to be included. I'll do some research to find out the reason since i didn't bought the book itself. :(

I know reading is good because it will help me expand my knowledge. But since I join mylot I only have the time to read magazine, lol. But thank you very much for sharing the info. Happy mylotting.

Well some books are available online but I prefer harcopy(if i can). I sometimes read while traveling from work to my house especially in LRT (Light Rail Transit). Before computers were in a boom, I always have time to read a book and it's my second past time (watching a tv show is the first one). Well technology is really something now so we can read a book online. Hope you can read one, online or not. Happy mylotting!

Hello Leixa. It has been awhile since i was really enjoyed reading a book from my favourite author. Although i wanted to read some new ones from different author. Those books title would be of help. I have been reading john grisham novels, as most of his books are played in movies. So with Harry Potter. JK Rowling is one of my favourite. I haven't read the book 4 of HP. Anyways, the link you provided are awesome. i need to check these books in the bookstore. Hopefully, i could get to read a book once inawhile. Have a great weekend! :)

The Alchemist didn't make it to the list though. I found it quite good. But other books by the same author is included.

Felt the same way too. Would "The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien be made into a movie like the Lord of the Rings? Are there plans? The book "Frankenstein" is that the one where the movie of the same title came from? A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens sound familiar to me but I know I haven't read it yet. hmm.

That is only a list of 1,001 books compiled by someone who thinks those are books we need to read before we die. I've read many of them.I read lots of books, but most of them would never get on the list since I read lots of Christian fiction by newer authors. Most of the books on the list that I had read was required reading in school.

Thanks patgalca. I think I commented already in response number 2 the one who edited the compilation of over one hundred literary critics etc. I'm so sorry, maybe I should have included that information at the start of the discussion so there would be no confusion. And maybe I should also have included the photo of that book. The title with "before you die" is really stricking i guess. Thanks for sharing your views.

Well I have looked at the list and there are a few books here that I have read and many I would never even consider. However, as I read the list I started to notice that many of them are also movies. In fact I have often seen the movie but never read the book and am not particularly interested in doing so.
I am wondering if they have only chosen books that have also become movies. For instance "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Phillip D*ck was made into a Harrison Ford movie called Blade Runner. Cannot put his name down as the word is against the rules. Why include the only novel by this man that ever became a movie. Several of his books were just as good.
This also applies to 2001 a space odyssey, Don Quixote, The War of the Worlds, The English Patient, Out of Africa. All became movies and the more I look at the titles the more movies I see. So it seems to me that this is the criteria for adding the book to the list. Books that became movies that they consider good.

The only books that I seem to have read on this list are books that I had read at school as a child, and a rare few I have come across on my own.

3) The Midwich Cuckoos - John Wyndham
4) Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
5) Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
6) To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee

8) Aesop's Fables - Aesopus
9) Treasure Island - Robert Louis Stevenson
10) Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
