i think it depends on what me and the other person needs to talk about. If it is something of importance or an emergency than I would prefer talking on the phone about it but if it is something not as important than email. I will email most of my long distance friends but talk on the phone with friends and family locally.

If the person with whom I want to communicate lives in the same city or the same state then, I prefer talking over the phone. Most of my friends are not online too often so, they may notice my message after a few days. If the person lives in some other country then I prefer emails as it is cheaper and faster. I do talk with them occasionally.

it would depends on my mood. if i'm feeling chatty and happy, i would prefer to have a long chat over the phone. but then, if i'm sad and moody, then i will prefer to use email or SMS
