and it appeared to be abandoned would you go check it out? Would you avoid it and continue on your way? Would you report it to the authority?
Tonight while I was driving home I saw a rather large cooler on the side of the road when I got up to a stop sign. The top of it was all taped up with what looked to be duct tape. My first thought was maybe it had some sort of bomb inside of it (anyone remember the unabomber?) so I wanted nothing to do with it. But after I made my stop and drove off I thought what if it wasn't? What if it was a bunch of money or baby animals stuck inside of this cooler? As I had one of my children with me and my husband expected me home I continued on my way. Though it does make me wonder what was inside of that cooler...
So what would you do if you saw a cooler, box, or other type of container abandoned on the side of the road?

I have actually had this same thing happen before. Sometimes it was a garbage bag that had a shape to it that bothered me. I am terribly curious and so I would have stopped and opened it. The desire to know what was in it would have plagued me all night long, especially since you said it looked to be duct taped on the top.
At the same time. I am sitting here thinking about that garbage bag I couldn't resist opening. I had dreams of money, money, and more money. lol... But then I thought my luck it would belong to a gangster and he would come find me. I opened it very slowly and well, lmao, not money. It was a bag of rotted fruit someone had decided to toss out I guess. I nicelt tied it back up and left it for the next curious clown. And then alllllllll night I thought about some cop finding it, fingerprinting it and thinking I dumped it. {yessss, I know, what a mind.LOL} One thing I can guarentee you. The next bag or cooler or box I come across... I am going to open it again. I JUST have to know. smilesssssssss...

Maybe you should carry some gloves with you and then when you see a suspicious looking box or bag you can put o your gloves and then the cops will be none the wiser about your involvement in finding a bagful of rotten fruit!!
Yes its a terrible thing to have an over-imaginative imagination - I have one of those and the things that my mind comes up with makes me even more scared or nervous!!

last week on saturday tw bike riders just left a plastic bag in front of a shop . A little nine year old boy probably thought they dropped it by mistake and went over to peek inside and he was blown to bits as the bomb exploded. I would say you did the right thing by driving by and Dday may be you just curb your urge next time. The times have changed now, the world is no longer a safe heaven we grew up in. Its sad turn of events. But if I werwe you I will not go near abandoned packages but rather call cops immediately.

aww after reading it i wanted to know what was in it lol. I probably wouldn't of stopped and opened. Who would you even call to tell them that maybe they should go check it out? 911? It being duct taped makes you wonder even more. After Katrina everyone just about put their fridge on the side of the road duct taped b/c when you opened it it would be horrible the smell of rotting meat. I'm reading a book about one of the fridges had hands in it lol its a fiction book but a very good one but no telling it could of happened.

No, not 911. Since it would not have been considered an emergency I myself was not sure what number I was supposed to call, that is until I looked it up. Apparently the Sacramento area got a relatively new number for non-emergency situations such as this back a few months ago. It is 311.

Earlier I would have wanted to check out what it is and return it if belonged to someone. But just two days back, there was a bomb blast with a young boy trying to return a box that two people had dropped. I was so angry....the poor boy was trying to help and the box had a bomb in it!
So, I'd stay away from something like this and ask my kids to stay away too...even if it really was something important...or little animals in there.

Like an idiot, I'd open it. Cos like you said, it could contain animals that some horrible person put in there. I think people like that should be executed, they're too sick to be exposed to society.

Hello sacmom
No I wouldn't go and investigate as I am either driving on my own or with my kids and although I am nosy and curious I wouldn't stop and have a look. I would be worried that while I was looking someone might steal my car or worse!

JuMm... a box aside of the road... I wouldnt dare to come close to it, there could be something shady about it and I'm a really easy-to-fright person. Also, I wouldnt recommend you to stood up alongside the street, what if its a scam to get you down of your car. =S

I think most probably i will just leave it, and continue with my journey home or to where i'm heading to.. But now after all the spates of bombings everywhere in the world, i think it's still better to report it to the authorities and let them handle it.. IN a way, we can help to prevent more casaulties if it's really a bomb in it ^_^

i sort of don't know what i would do.if it looked really suspect i would call the police and get them to check it out before i would touch it,if it was dangerous let them deal with it,or if it was someone dumping baby animals, let them get the prints off the bags.if it was a bunch of money i would hope the police would share it with me.cheers sue

I would have reservations these days about checking the box out,but thats only because of the never ending bomb scares that we were having ,im sure that I would rather someone from the local authorities came along and checked it out,it may even need the bomb disposal unit, but that is being pessimistic. But when my daughter and son in law were shopping at a department store in Doncaster, there was a bomb alert, and the store was evacuuated, they were petrified, mum in law was with them, and of course they had their sonwith them too,as it turned out my son in law had been to a car bbot sale early that morning and they had bought some toys racing cars for my grandson there, they were in a yellow plastic bag, which when he checked,he didnt have as he stood outside the store, then it dawned ,the bomb that was set to be detonated by the bomb squad was in fact the bag containing the racing cars from the boot sale, were their faces red,you bet they were!

I'd probably just go around it and ignore it, but if it was some kind of cooler and it looked good, I might stop and get it. These days you know, theres no telling what people do, and what you might find in it, body parts or something like that is what I would be thinking..lol.

I would simply ignore it and carry on because, if it has bomb or something like that I am not the kind of person to get involved in that and if it has money or valueables, well I don't expect money coming my way this way. And even if I do get money, since it does not belong to me I would have to find its owner.

i would do the same too. unless there is incriminating evidence to imply that there is something suspicious inside the box, if not i would not stop. it is not uncommon to see boxes on the road in the place i lived so it would not raised an alarm if i see one around.

Maybe I watch too much crime drama. I'm too chicken and paranoid to investigate. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be curious. I'm sure my mind would run overtime trying to guess what was inside the cooler. The first thing I thought of after reading your description was an organ. Maybe there was a liver or a heart inside that cooler. I doubt that it would have duct tape wrapped around it. But it is killing me not knowing what was inside the cooler.

Yes I would check to be sure nothing alive is inside the box, cooler or even plastic bag. There are so many mean and cruel people in this world that I wouldn't be one bit surprised if someone were to find something live in the container. However, one has to be very careful too because it could be a ruse too and there could be a snake inside. Another thing too, you don't want your finger prints on something that may be a part of a crime scene either. But I would have to know if there was anything alive inside in hopes to rescue it.

I would call it in if there was a number to call! BART wants us to notify them if that happens! To me, it is comical ! Today, I stopped into the SSA building and the security guard tells us all, if we have mace or tear gas on us to take it back out to our cars!

Are you talking about Bay Area Rapid Transit?
Apparently there were so many non emergency numbers people could call here in Sacramento that sometimes they would call the wrong one. So now there is one number to call in situations like this that aren't considered an emergency. It is 311.

With something as suspicious looking as that, I would have left it alone. But I might have called the authorities. Like you said, who know what could have been in there.
If it were a garbage bag, or a box, I would not have thought twice about it

I've stopped to check boxes or even bags at times. Something duct taped up I'd maybe be a bit worried about checking.
If its bags of pop bottles I've taken them home to recycle. I've stopped and moved boxes out of the middle of the road. Had a friend just drive over a box and some idiot had stuck it in the middle of the road with a pile of rocks in...she lost her oil pan.
I've never found anything too interesting in a box at the side of the road.

OMG, that is terrible! Like your friend, I accidentally ran over a box that was left on the road. Apparently it had a bunch of styrofoam inside of it so the only thing I lost was a part of my headlight's lens. Though it sure did scare me when I went over it! I'm not sure how it got there, but I did see a couple of kids on bicycles that happened to be near the box right before it happened...

If I swa anything like this I ould just have to have a look - my curiosity could get me killed.
A few years ago when I orked for a bus company we had a 'bomb scare' when someone abandoned a rucksack at a bus station.
It was at the height of the paranoia about IRA bombs in England but while everybody else cleared the are a I sauntered up to the bag and discovered it was full of somebody's laundry.
I got a dressing down from my boss but he was also quite glad we did not suffer major disruption.
